Carburetor car engine starts and stalls

In this article we will take a closer look at the situation when a carburetor engine of a passenger car (VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099, 2105, 2107 and their modifications) starts and stalls due to a carburetor malfunction. Malfunctions of carburetors 2105, 2107 Ozone, 2108, 21081, 21083 Solex and their modifications will be considered.

Symptoms of a problem

— The engine starts, runs for a few seconds and stalls, repeated starts are unsuccessful.

— The engine starts with difficulty, after running for a short time it stalls, after restarting it starts and runs.

— The engine starts and immediately stalls, starts again and stalls again, and so on several times, but then it still starts working.

Causes of malfunction

There is no fuel in the float chamber

Pump it up using the manual pump lever on the fuel pump.

The fuel pump or power system may be faulty. Remove the hose from the carburetor fuel supply fitting and press the manual primer lever on the fuel pump several times. A strong pulsating stream of gasoline should come out of the hose hole. If it is missing or weak, check the fuel pump or power system.

The strainer at the carburetor inlet is clogged

Remove it by unscrewing the cap, clean it (you can use a toothbrush), rinse with acetone or gasoline and blow with compressed air. At the same time, clean the filter seat in the carburetor cover.

The solenoid valve is faulty or the fuel jet of the idle system is clogged

Check whether the solenoid valve or the idle air system fuel nozzle holder has become loose due to any circumstances. Tighten it. Remove the wire from the valve, and then put it back on. You should hear the click of the valve being activated. If it is not there, we connect a piece of wire plus the battery and the valve outlet. There is no click - we change the valve. There is a click - we check the EPH system.

Check the serviceability of the valve itself by unscrewing it from the carburetor and removing the fuel jet from it. The jet should be carefully inspected for contamination and deformation. We also check the ease of movement of the valve shut-off needle, the presence and integrity of the rubber O-ring on the valve body.

Unscrew the idle air system fuel nozzle holder (on carburetors with a holder instead of a solenoid valve), rinse, clean the fuel nozzle and blow with compressed air.

“Suction” of foreign air into the carburetor

In this case, the fuel mixture is lean. If the engine starts and immediately stalls, it is most likely very lean. The image shows probable places where foreign air is “sucked in” on the 2108 Solex carburetor.

Niva does not idle and stalls: reasons, repairs

Why does the Niva stall at idle? Let's figure it out.

Why does the Niva stall at idle (main reasons)

Dashboard of a stalled Niva

The Niva stalled immediately after starting, why?

Almost always, if a Niva car does not idle and stalls, the reason for this is contamination of parts, for example:

  • The throttle valve, injector or carburetor is clogged.
  • The idle relay has failed.
  • The idle jets are dirty.
  • The fuel pump is dirty.
  • The engine ventilation system is clogged.

The throttle valve on the VAZ-2121 is dirty

A dirty throttle valve is to blame!

It happens that the car does not want to slow down the engine speed when you release the gas pedal or stalls at idle. Basically, the problem here lies in a clogged throttle valve. It might just jam.

This problem can happen if you constantly drive on low-quality gasoline. The damper can become clogged when contaminated air enters.

The problem can be corrected by cleaning the damper. To do this, you need to use a regular carburetor cleaner. It is sold in the store.

You should also pay attention to the clogging of the oil trap in the engine crankcase. In this case, the engine will suffocate from excess gases from the crankcase. As a result, it will not hold idle speed and stall. To eliminate the problem, you should regularly wash the crankcase ventilation filter.

The engine stalls immediately, but then starts

Here the reason may be in the firmware of the electronic engine control unit. The reason for this may be improperly performed tuning of the power unit. In this case, the engine will operate stably only at high speeds. If they drop below 1,000 rpm, the engine will simply stall. This malfunction can be eliminated by flashing the unit to the factory version of the program.

You should also pay attention to all kinds of sensors in car systems. These are, for example, the idle speed control, the throttle position sensor and others. They need to be checked at stands.

Carburetor cleaning and repair on Niva 2121

Inspection and disassembly of the carburetor.

If a carburetor is installed on a car, then in 4 cases out of 5 it can be the cause of unstable engine operation. The most common problem is that the carburetor is clogged. Although this unit is considered reliable in a car, it should also be cleaned periodically. It must be washed using special solvents that are sold in the store.

Dirty carburetor.

The main enemy of the carburetor is low-quality fuel. Dirt and moisture can also get there from the tank. Therefore, it is recommended to regularly change the fuel filter, which is installed in front of the carburetor.

The fuel pump should be cleaned periodically. A mesh is installed on it, which traps debris.

Poor quality or old hoses through which fuel enters the tank are another reason for carburetor clogging. Such parts need to be changed every 10–15 years.

It should be checked when the car stalls at idle. To check, you need to turn on the ignition and reset the wire from the EMC and reconnect it. A click should be heard. When it is not there, you should check whether voltage is supplied to it. In some cases, you will have to completely replace the part.

What to do if you have problems with the exhaust system

If the car stalls immediately after the engine starts, not because of a poor air-fuel mixture, then the reason lies in the exhaust system. When the car is unable to release exhaust gases, they mix with the air-fuel mixture, causing it to deteriorate and the engine to stall. If the problem is with the exhaust system, do the following:

  • Make sure the muffler is not clogged with any debris. In winter, for example, snow may get into it or the muffler may freeze up due to the presence of water in it. If water appears in the muffler, the cause may be a broken head gasket;
  • Check the muffler catalyst. It may be clogged or not working properly. In winter, there is a chance that it froze.

If the car stalls immediately after starting the engine in winter, the first step is to drive it to a heated room, and after that, depending on the stability of the engine, make a decision on diagnosing or repairing the units.

The car starts and immediately stalls

Owners of VAZ 2107, 2110, 2112, 2114, and other cars, may encounter a problem - the car starts and immediately stalls. The engine starts, but after a few seconds the speed drops and the engine stalls. Let's look at possible causes of startup failure and ways to eliminate them.

Starts and stalls

First, you need to go through the most obvious options.

  • Gasoline (diesel fuel) has run out. No matter how paradoxical it may sound, drivers often forget to monitor the level of fuel in the tank.
  • On diesel engines (especially in winter), the reason that the car starts and stalls almost immediately can be frozen fuel.
  • The quality of gasoline at gas stations is often appalling, so if you fill your car with low-quality fuel, you may encounter the problem of a stalled engine. If there is only a little bad gasoline, you can dilute it with good gasoline. But if the tank is full, then it’s better to drain the surrogate out of harm’s way.
  • Worn wires and old (faulty) spark plugs are also quite often the cause.
  • Engine compression, or rather its absence, can provoke a situation in which the engine stalls barely having time to “catch up”. But this is already a very serious breakdown, the appearance of which is accompanied by a host of other symptoms, which are simply impossible not to notice during the operation of the car.

The injector starts and stalls

Fuel-injected cars may behave this way due to a faulty fuel pump. It's in the tank. It is very easy to check its functionality. If you turn the ignition key to the first position and listen, you will hear the pump working, pumping gasoline into the system.

Dirty fuel filters

Severe contamination of the fine fuel filter can also cause the car to stall after starting. The filter simply does not have time to pass the required amount of gasoline.

ECU errors quite often lead to problems with starting the engine, not receiving signals from certain sensors, or receiving them in a distorted form. It is best to diagnose such breakdowns in specialized services.

Why do carburetor cars start and stall?

If the car starts and immediately stalls, the problem may be due to a lack of fuel in the float chamber. You can try manually pumping up the fuel pump. It must be checked for functionality and, if necessary, replaced.

Before you independently clean the power system in general and the carburetor in particular, you should remember that any unconscious manipulations can lead to a large increase in fuel consumption.

Another reason why the engine stalls is that the mesh filter in the carburetor in front of its inlet is clogged. If the car starts and stalls after a few seconds because of this filter, then it needs to be cleaned and washed. To do this, use a toothbrush and a solvent (gasoline or acetone). After this, immediately, together with the filter, clean the slot into which it is inserted.

Carburetor strainer

It happens that in VAZ cars, a few seconds after starting, the speed drops due to a malfunction of the solenoid valve. The test is carried out as follows: the valve is unscrewed, power is supplied to the positive contact, and the housing is shorted to engine ground. If the valve is working properly, a distinct sound will be heard and the needle will enter the body.

Checking the solenoid valve

You can simply connect a wire to the valve and put it in place. If you do not hear a click, the valve is faulty. We unscrew the valve and remove the jet from it. If it is bent, it needs to be replaced. Make sure that the valve shut-off needle moves freely, that the valve gasket is not torn and that it is sealed tightly against the body.

If the valve clicks, then you need to diagnose the EPH system. The idle fuel jet may need cleaning. If the car engine speed drops, its clogging can affect the stability of operation. To clean the nozzle, it is necessary to create increased vacuum in the system channels.

To do this, start the car and raise the speed to 3000. Turn out the jet holder (solenoid valve) a few turns. This allows you to create the required vacuum in the channels. We repeat the procedure several times.

Other reasons for incorrect starting of the VAZ 2107 engine

Another common problem that causes the engine of VAZ 2107 cars to start and stall is excess air getting into the carburetor. In this case, the fuel mixture cannot keep the engine running for a long time, and although the car starts, it stalls after a few seconds. It is necessary to determine the location of the air leak and eliminate the gap.

It happens that the jets and pipes of the dosing system become clogged. This also affects the drop in engine speed, so that the VAZ 2107 stalls after a few seconds. What to do in this case? You need to unscrew the jets and pipes under the carburetor cover and clean them. After this, blow out the wells and jets with compressed air. If you have a Solex carburetor, then you also need to clean and blow out the fuel jets located at the bottom of the wells.

Adjusting the fuel level in the float chamber (Solex carburetors)

In addition to all of the above, engine speed drops if the fuel level in the carburetor (float chamber) is incorrectly adjusted. As a result, there is either not enough gasoline in the fuel mixture or too much of it.

When adjusting the VAZ 2107 carburetor, it does not need to be disconnected from the engine. Follow these steps:

  1. remove the air filter housing by unscrewing all fasteners;
  2. remove the carburetor cover;
  3. check the position of the floats. To do this, separate and bring them together to achieve the correct location.

It is necessary to achieve such a position of the floats so that they move freely without clinging to the walls of the chamber in which they are located. It will not be superfluous to measure the distance from the protrusions on the floats to the paper gasket. The distance should be within 0.75–1.25 mm. Use a feeler gauge to measure.

Adjusting the fuel level

What to do if it is far from normal? In this case, you need to adjust the height of each of the floats. As we have seen, there are many reasons why the engine stalls. To start the engine correctly, you need to check and eliminate all the above faults. Afterwards, if the problem is not resolved, you will have to contact specialists.

Why does the car start and stall?

When it comes to air, there are only three possible reasons:

  • Clogged air filter - but only if it is very clogged. This will be preceded by unstable idle speed, failures, engine tripping and increased fuel consumption.
  • Faulty EPH valve. Typical for carburetor engines.
  • Malfunctions in the operation of the idle air regulator. In injection engines, this malfunction manifests itself as follows: the car starts, but does not idle. Most likely, if you have time to add gas, it will work, but when the speed decreases, it will still stall.

As for the ignition, this could be a malfunction of the ignition, faulty spark plugs, armor wires, a coil or coils, if there are several of them. First, check the spark. On a single-coil system, the cable is removed and applied close to the motor. If there is a spark when you crank the starter, then everything is fine with the ignition. It is advisable to check all wires in this way. Then the candles are unscrewed. A normal working candle should look like this:

This means there are no problems with the ignition. But if there is not even a spark, then the problem may be in the coil. This is checked by replacing it with a known good one. If the situation has not changed, then the problem must be looked for in the electrical wiring. But this is not a panacea and we will tell you why after we look at the problems with fuel.

In carburetor engines this was due to a malfunction of the fuel pump. It has a rod that drives the plunger. This forces it to pump fuel into the carburetor. But if the rod was worn down, then the pump worked only in manual mode. The driver pumped gasoline, the engine started, but after a while the level in the float chamber dropped and the engine stalled.

Modern engines do not have this problem, but it can be in the injectors. But not in disrupting their work. And the lack of power, which can be caused by special anti-theft devices.

Such devices are called immobilizers. In fact, they rarely fail, but if you start the car with a key that does not have a chip, it will not start. Although some models start and stall immediately. How to determine that this is the result of the anti-theft system? On modern cars there is an orange key on the panel. If it lights up, the key has not been read, but if it lights up and goes out, then the car has read the key and it should start. Renault cars have a red light that blinks when the key is not read.

The immobilizer blocks the injector circuits, the injection computer at the software level or the ignition system. Each manufacturer has its own preferences in this matter. In addition, there is a separate caste of these devices that car owners install themselves - these are all kinds of tags or relays that turn off the ignition or injector circuits.

Incorrect installation of these devices leads to the fact that the engine starts with fuel remaining in the manifold and stalls. However, the starter can rotate without the slightest possibility of starting.

VAZ 21099 carburetor starts and immediately stalls: what is the reason

The VAZ 21099 car produced by the Volzhsky Automobile Plant is a model of the new generation of Samara cars. It is equipped with a carburetor unit, is well controlled, and is stable on the roads. But there are times when the VAZ 21099 carburetor starts and immediately stalls.

General characteristics of the VAZ carburetor

The main part of the “heart” of the car

A carburetor is a device in which a flammable mixture of gasoline and air is formed. Liquid gasoline is sprayed into the air, turning into millions of small droplets that are enriched with oxygen. Two carburetor chambers - a float chamber and a mixing chamber - are involved in the process of forming an enriched mixture to power the internal combustion engine.

A certain level of gasoline is maintained in the float chamber. When enriched, the fuel enters the mixing chamber through a special tube - a sprayer. The resulting mixture can be rich if there is a lot of air in it, but it can also be lean.

The speed of the car depends on the enrichment of the mixture, that is, on the operation of the carburetor. The throttle valve of the mechanism allows the working mixture to enter the engine. The more it gets into the engine, the higher the speed of the car will be.

The starter is a small electric motor that consists of 4 stripes. The device provides primary rotation of the crankshaft. The crankshaft helps start the engine. It is located to the left of the motor on the clutch housing. Includes the base, caps on the side of the distributor and electric drive, the drive itself, traction relay, stator winding outlet, mounting bolts. VAZ starter repair is required if the car starts and stalls.

Starter repair

Despite the fact that the VAZ 21099 carburetor has a reliable design, breakdowns still occur periodically. For example, sometimes the starter does not turn.

Disassembly and repair are carried out in the following sequence. You need to unscrew the nut from the contact and release the terminal tip of the stator winding. Pull out the traction relay by disconnecting the armature from the lever. Remove the armature, spring, and sealing part. Using a pipe of a certain diameter, knock out the stopper to get the stopper.

After removing the rings, remove the protection cap, washers, and tie rods. The collector cover is removed, the springs of the insulated brushes are moved away with a screwdriver, and the brush holder is removed. Electrically insulated brushes remain on the terminals of the stator winding.

The best starter for "nine"

Next, remove the stator with the housing, the plastic stop, take out the armature from the cover on the drive side and the intermediate support. After this, remove the coupling with the lever, the stop ring, and the contacts from the relay rod. Using a soldering iron, the winding leads are disconnected along with the terminals. The relay cover is removed, a contact plate with a rod is taken out, from which the spring is removed along with the nut.

Reassemble the starter in reverse order. When assembling, you need to properly solder the parts of the starter relay, not forgetting to lubricate the splines, and correctly and accurately select nuts and washers to replace old ones.

If you need to replace the VAZ starter, the block wire is disconnected from the relay terminal. Then you should unscrew the nut, remove the contact relay wire, and disconnect the protection. At the bottom and top of the engine, remove the retaining washers and remove the starter from the crankcase. When installing the unit, the steps are performed in the reverse order.

How to help the engine work

Sometimes the VAZ 21099 carburetor does not start well. To help a cold engine work, you need to perform the following steps.

  1. Press the handle of the fuel pump to pump gasoline into the carburetor float chamber.
  2. Place the gearshift lever in neutral position.
  3. Pull the choke toward you, closing the throttle valve, and with the ignition on, try to crank the starter. If unsuccessful, repeat the action after some time.
  4. If the car starts, let it idle, release the throttle and take your foot off the clutch pedal.
  5. In the cold season, try to turn the crankshaft several times, turn the headlights on and off, pull out the choke handle, squeeze the clutch and turn the starter. In winter, to keep warm and improve engine performance, it is recommended to wrap the radiator grille. When the engine starts, the pressure control and battery charging lights on the operating panel should go out.

The driver starts the car

When the car is warmed up, its engine should start running immediately. Other situations arise when the machine does not. Starting a hot engine should take place with the throttle valve open and the gas pedal depressed to one third of its full travel. As soon as the engine starts, you need to release the accelerator pedal. If the start is unsuccessful, repeating the described steps may lead to difficulty starting the engine and flooding the spark plugs with gasoline. If this does happen, the turned out candles must be dried with air.

Causes of malfunction and ways to eliminate them

If a carburetor engine is difficult to start, the following faults may be the cause.

  1. Battery capacity is low. The starter turns, but the engine does not start due to the fact that the voltage drops to its lowest level when starting, the injectors do not open, and the ignition is blocked. The faulty battery needs to be repaired and replaced.
  2. The wiring of the poles to the synchronizer sensor is incorrect. Check the wires and swap them.
  3. The tightness of the gearbox valve on the fuel rail is lost. Through the regulator membrane, gasoline vapors or gasoline enter the receiver, and the mixture becomes more saturated. A hot engine will have difficulty starting. The valve needs to be replaced or repaired.

The engine starts and immediately stalls - a problem that often occurs in the VAZ 21099 carburetor. The driver of the car begins to panic and does not know how to get out of the situation. Sometimes the car starts after several attempts, but the problem starts to occur quite often.

What to do in this case? If you have no experience, it is better to entrust diagnostics and repairs to service station specialists. When the car starts and immediately stalls, and you are far from home, it is better to call a tow truck.

Starting the engine with a button

You can diagnose the idle speed of a VAZ.

  • After stopping, the car will not start when hot, and if it starts, it immediately stalls. Idle speed is set only after pressing the gas lever multiple times. The same thing happens with a cold engine.
  • Regardless of whether the engine is hot or cold, it starts only with the help of the accelerator.
  • The gas pedal helps warm up the engine and start moving.
  • A sharp brake causes the engine to turn off.

Cleaning the throttle valve or idle air control can help the problem. No result - the IAC must be replaced.
