The best oil for a Renault Logan car has always been considered to be the one recommended by the factory that produces this model. In all Renault service centers, during routine maintenance to replace engine lubricant, oil from the French brand ELF is filled. In rare cases, TOTAL oil may be offered, which is produced by the same plant as ELF. They even have the same retail containers.

Of course, the owner may not agree with the oils recommended by the factory and act at his own discretion. Here are the most common reasons for this:

  1. As a rule, the search for the best oil occurs after the end of the warranty period, and is caused by a frank desire to perform a simple procedure yourself, rather than pay for the services of changing engine oil at an official service center;
  2. When purchasing original oil yourself, you can easily purchase a counterfeit, so choose a lubricant with more reliable protection against counterfeiting;
  3. The desire to save money on purchasing oils and, as a result, choosing brands with a more affordable price. This reason is most common for owners of earlier model years;
  4. Advice from friends, acquaintances or work colleagues who use a different, in their opinion, higher quality oil in their cars.

The Renault concern has developed tolerance standards for the quality of oils used in cars. According to API classification, the characteristics of oils must correspond to classes SL, SM and SN. In addition, ash content, the presence of necessary additives, etc. should be taken into account. Any engine oil that meets the requirements and operating temperature (the lower the ambient temperature, the lower the oil viscosity should be) can be used to lubricate the Renault Logan engine. When making a selection of motor oils for our rating, we took into account not only the above requirements. The decision-making was greatly influenced by reviews from owners who fill Renault Logan with oils from other manufacturers, recommendations from mechanics who deal with the repair of engines of this brand in their work, and the popularity of the brand among car enthusiasts.

How much oil to fill in Renault Logan engine

First generation LS, 2004-2016

Logan LS with the factory designation L90 was developed on the modular BO platform, which later became the basis for such models as Duster, Terrano, Captur and Arkana. According to official data, Renault has set the developers the task of producing an affordable car at a starting price of 5,000 euros. It is also known that during its design, not a single pre-production version was created thanks to computer modeling. In Russia, the first Logan was equipped with 1.4 and 1.6 liter gasoline engines (75-102 hp), as well as a manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. The base cost of the model was 252 thousand rubles, but already in 2015 it jumped to 400 thousand.

Second generation L8, since 2014

The 2014 Logan uses an updated design and a modified platform from its predecessor. The car still has a large trunk with a capacity of 510 liters. In addition, it became possible to fold the rear seat backs for transporting long items. The second generation Logan in Turkey is positioned as Renault Symbol. In terms of safety, the model conditionally complies with modern standards, since it has only three stars (out of five) in the EuroNCAP crash test. Thus, the safety of Logan II is at the level of the 2004 model. In Russia, the car is presented with modernized 1.6 liter engines (82, 102 and 113 hp). In Europe there is still a version with a 1.5 liter diesel engine, as well as a 0.9 liter petrol turbo engine.

What oil to use for the Renault Logan engine

Original

The manufacturer of the Renault Logan recommends using branded engine oil Elf Evolution 900 SXR 5W-40. The most preferred oil viscosity depends on the ambient temperature. If the car is used only in the hot season, then you can limit yourself to “summer” oil with a viscosity of 20W-40 or 25w-50. If the car is used primarily in winter, then 0W-40, 0W-30 or 5W-30 will be suitable. For all-season use, the manufacturer recommends 10W-40, 10W-30 or 5W-40.

Unoriginal

Owners of Renault Logan cars prefer high-quality motor oils from well-known brands with a good reputation: Kixx, Shell, Motul, Valvoline, Mannol, Mobil, etc. In addition, before purchasing a suitable oil, you need to make sure that the API approval is compatible with a gasoline or diesel engine. This parameter is selected depending on the year of manufacture of the car. For example, for the first generation petrol Logan, produced in 2004. All-season semi-synthetic 10W-30 API-SJ is recommended, while for more recent cars manufactured in 2009. you can use semi-synthetic API-SL. As for the second generation Logan, model 2013, in this case you can opt for all-season synthetics 10W-40 API-SM. For 2020 models, synthetics are also suitable, but with API-SN approval. Below are the best options for analogue motor oils for Renault Logan.

  • MOtul 8100 Eco-Clean 5W-30
  • Neste Oil 5W-30

Semi-synthetic:

  • Liqui Moly Top Tec 4100 5W-40
  • Castrol Magnatec 10W-40
  • Texaco Havoline Extra 10W-40.

Renault Logan engine oil change period

Owners of new Renault Logan cars change the engine oil immediately after the break-in period, which lasts 1000 km. Further - every 10 thousand km or annually. The most accurate oil change interval depends on its condition after several thousand kilometers. For example, if after 6 thousand km signs of deterioration in the condition of the oil are revealed (turbidity, the presence of wear products in the form of sediment, a burning smell, insufficient level), then there is a need to replace it every 6-7 thousand km. However, this is usually true for harsh operating conditions, which are dominated by off-road driving or in city traffic jams, sudden starts and braking, aggressive driving style, non-compliance with traffic rules, etc.

Factory oil

If you have the financial means, you can use the original engine oil with which Lada Largus leaves the factory assembly line. So, at the first stage of production, Shell PC 1448 0W30 factory lubricant was poured into Lada Largus, and later Lukoil Genesis RN 5W40 was poured into the car. According to available information, the Lada Largus engine currently uses Elf Solaris RNX 5W30. This means that when changing the oil for the first time, it is advisable to select the same fluid. As an option, a similar lubricant will do, but it should have compatible parameters. Naturally, there are other options. So, especially for Lada Largus, we can recommend high-quality lubricant Elf Excellium NF 5W40.

It is not surprising why oils from French manufacturers or other imported lubricants are mainly suitable for Lada Largus. After all, it’s no secret that Largus is a copy of the French model Renault Logan MCV, built on the basis of the 2004 Logan. Over the past years, service specialists have studied the design of the machine well and can recommend the most suitable lubricant. So, another optimal option would be Elf Excellium LDX 5W40 instead of 5W30.

Based on the information received, we will draw some conclusions. Let us highlight suitable types of lubricants for the Lada Largus engine:

  • Shell PC 1448 0W30
  • Elf Solaris RNX 5W30
  • Excellium NF 5W40
  • Evolution SXR 5W40
  • Lukoil Evolution SXR 5W40

All information provided is for informational purposes only. VTM-auto recommendation.

Changing engine oil on Renault cars according to regulations every 15,000 km. or once a year. For those who rent a car for a long time, or expect to drive more than 200 thousand km, it is necessary to change it every 8000 km. It is best to fill in Elf oil, since this oil is designed specifically for Renault engines and at the same time is inexpensive compared to other motor oils.

What kind of oil should I put in Renault?

An oil change at a VTM-auto service center costs 350 rubles (whether engine protection is installed or not).

The oil must be selected according to the engine and based on its characteristics, the most popular Elf oils are:

Elf Evolution 5W40 NF or Elf Evolution 5W30 SXR: suitable for most 1.4 - 1.6 petrol engines, optimal quality-price ratio. Cars Renault Logan, Duster, Sandero, Kaptur, Stepway, Symbol, Kangoo, Lada Largus, Nissan Almera.

Elf Evolution 5W40 SXR - costs more, but has better performance (freezing point, flash, etc.) due to higher quality additives. Recommended for gasoline engines with a phase regulator gear, as well as diesel engines (only without a particulate filter). For example, for Renault Megane, Fluence, Scenic, Laguna volume 1.6, as well as Duster with a 2.0 engine and Kaptur, Traffic, Vivaro, Nissan Terrano (Terrano).

Elf Evolution Full-Tech Fe 5W30 - only for diesel engines if a particulate filter is installed (new Duster, Laguna, Traffic and others).

Do-it-yourself oil change:

To change the oil yourself, you need: an oil filter puller, an oil filter, engine oil, a drain plug washer and an 8 mm square socket. The process is as follows: unscrew the drain plug with an 8 mm socket on the engine sump, after the oil has drained, screw the plug back. We remove the old oil filter and install a new one, after filling it with a little new engine oil. Next, fill in new oil.

How to choose the right car oil?

The selection of lubricant is made according to the vehicle operating instructions. The Renault Logan manufacturer recommends using original lubricant or liquids with similar quality characteristics. According to the car manual, the recommended engine oil for Renault Logan meets the design features of the type of power unit.

The season in which the vehicle will be operated also affects the selection of lubricant. For harsh winters and hot summers, synthetic or semi-synthetic lubricants are chosen. Mineral motor oil does not change its original properties over a very limited range of operating temperatures and is used in moderate temperature conditions.
