Fuel filter VAZ 2109, 2114, 2115 replacement of the sump and when it needs to be done, where it is located and how

What fuel filters are installed on VAZ 2109/2114/2115 cars

VAZ cars of the listed models are equipped with filters designed for various power plants. They are divided into two types: for coarse cleaning (mesh in the fuel pump) and fine cleaning FTO (separate filter).

The VAZ coarse filter is located inside the fuel pump

Filters intended for carburetor systems are made of durable and transparent material, usually plastic. The transparency of the case allows you to monitor the state of cleanliness and promptly change consumables. These models are capable of cleaning fuel in a zone of 15–20 microns. One of these materials is placed inside them: felt, felt or paper.

For injection systems of VAZ cars, cleaning of a much higher level is required. Therefore, the filters for injection “nines”, VAZ 2114 and 2115 are different. They are made of stainless steel and are installed separately.

For rough cleaning, plate-slit, mesh and belt are used, which trap debris found in the fuel. On the contrary, PTO uses elements made of porous materials.

Which ones are better

Fuel filters, especially for engines with injectors, must have the required cleaning quality. Therefore, the best cleaner can be called the one whose throughput is at least 5–7 microns (injector) and 15 microns (carburetor). In addition, it should not fail in the case of a pressure of 3-5 bar.

It is also recommended to pay attention when choosing the method of fastening the fuel system pipes. There are models with hexagonal locking and models with snap fastening. The latter are more convenient in terms of replacement.

Approximate cost of replacing fuel filters

Replacement takes approximately 30–50 minutes, depending on the part model. In this regard, the cost of the procedure at a service station also varies, which is calculated according to the amount of time spent.

In fact, it is recommended to initially negotiate with the service center employee about the cost of the procedure, agree on the time, etc. As a rule, the replacement price starts from 700 rubles and does not cross the line of 1000–1200 rubles.

The price of the VAZ fuel filter itself does not exceed 200–600 rubles.

Where are the purifiers located?

The location of fuel filters on VAZ models depends on the engine. On injection and carburetor systems they are located in different places.

Filter location on carburetor internal combustion engines

On carburetor VAZs, the fuel purifier is located under the hood. It is installed under the brake reservoir (main), secured with 2 clamps.

The filter for carburetor VAZs is located under the brake cylinder

Location of the cleaner on the injector

On a VAZ with an injection system, the FTO is installed under the car, at the rear near the muffler. It is mounted in the form of a cartridge in the fuel line. To inspect or dismantle it, you have to lift the car onto an overpass or pit.

Replacing the fuel filter

According to the schedule of routine maintenance as part of the maintenance of VAZ 21099,2109 vehicles, the fuel filter must be replaced after 20 thousand mileage, but as mentioned above, it is advisable to carry out the replacement at 15 thousand or even earlier, taking into account the influence of external factors. Below we present the procedure for replacing the fuel filter on VAZ 21099,2109 models with an injector.

To replace the filter you need to use a pit or lift. Work must be performed in a well-ventilated room or outdoors; it is not recommended to work in the heat; the entire process is carried out away from open flame sources.

The fuel filter is located under the vehicle behind the fuel tank near the exhaust pipe. To remove it you need to loosen the bolts holding the bracket together.

Next, unscrew the two fittings of the inlet and outlet pipes. In order to unscrew the nuts, you need two 19mm wrenches with which we unscrew the nut located on the filter housing that secures the pipeline.

Replacing the fuel filter VAZ 2109

It is imperative to fix how the fuel direction indicator is located, and you also need to take into account the possibility of fuel leaking from the pipes.

When reinstalling, pay attention to the direction indicator, since fuel will not flow through the pipeline into the injector through an incorrectly installed filter. Check the presence and integrity of the sealing rings, without which installation is prohibited, as this will lead to leaks and may cause an emergency. After installing the filter, start the VAZ engine and check all connections and the filter itself for leaks; if any, we fix them by tightening (but in moderation) or replacing the seals.

Required precautions when replacing:

  1. Smoking is prohibited while working on the fuel system.
  2. Carry out work with a fire extinguisher.
  3. Do not allow gasoline to come into contact with mucous membranes or eyes.
  4. It is necessary to work with good ventilation.
  5. The ambient temperature should not exceed 25 degrees.

Carry out work after the engine and exhaust system have completely cooled. Installation of the fuel filter is carried out strictly in the reverse order so that the fuel system does not fail. The process of replacing the fuel filter does not require special skills, and taking into account the above recommendations, it can be performed by a driver with little experience.

Accordingly, the cost of maintenance for the VAZ 21099.2109 will be significantly lower, and the car will behave faster. And of course, you must strive to use only high-quality fuel.

How to replace the coarse and fine fuel filter on a VAZ 2109/2114/2115

You can do the replacement on these VAZ modifications yourself. It is enough to obtain competent information, correctly imagine the process of removing and installing the entire part, and focus on the nuances.

Replacement on carburetor VAZ 2109/2114/2115 cars

The replacement algorithm for carburetor VAZs begins, first of all, with removing the element.

  1. First, loosen the clamps that are located on both sides of the filter (first the one closest to the engine, then the other).
  2. Then the fuel hoses are disconnected.

To remove the fine filter, you need to loosen the clamps and remove both fuel hoses

Causes of malfunction of the VAZ 2109/2114/2115 fuel filter

As was written above, the causes of purifier malfunctions are dirty fuel filled into car tanks at Russian gas stations. The high tar content in gasoline has a destructive effect on all vehicle power plant systems and injectors. This clogs the fuel lines. If there is water in the fuel, this contributes to corrosion, system elements are damaged, breakdowns occur in the cylinder-piston group, etc.

One of the common filter malfunctions involves filter leakage. This is caused not only by the fact that the cleaner becomes clogged with dirt, but also by the presence of excessive pressure in the system. Another reason for leakage is associated with abrasion of the sealing rings inside the fine filter.

If the filter is leaking due to dirt inside, then it is better to replace such an element. Worn seals also need to be replaced with new ones. But if there is excessive pressure in the system, then you need to pump out the air from inside. On VAZ cars a special spool is provided for this.

To remove excess pressure from the system, you need to press the spool

Before releasing the pressure, the car must be put on the handbrake and the gear engaged in neutral.

On VAZ cars, in which the cleaner is fixed with latches, the cause of the malfunction may lie elsewhere. The latch may simply break off, and then the filter will begin to leak fuel. In the photo below, the latches are circled with large red circles.

Latches are located on both sides of the filter

This is what a broken latch looks like.

A broken latch on a pipeline looks like this

A broken latch is always a problem, since it is simply impossible to find it on sale separately. You can, of course, purchase assembled tubes, but they are sold in a set of 3 pieces. The price is not small - 1300 rubles. If you don’t want to buy an expensive kit with an extra part, you can cut off the plastic part of the latches, leaving only the part that goes into the pipeline. Then make two adapters from fuel hoses, put them on and secure them with ordinary clamps for 20 rubles.

Another common defect is that the filter is not filled with fuel or is only half filled. The reason for this lies in the air lock formed inside the fuel system. Air is expelled, as mentioned above, through the spool.

If there is no special spool valve on the VAZ, then it is easy to expel the air by removing the fuel supply hose and allow the engine to exhaust the remaining fuel. The hose is then threaded into place and gasoline is manually pumped into the system.

A dirty filter cannot always be replaced. In some cases, especially when the purifier was installed relatively recently, you can try cleaning it. This is done like this: a stream of air from the compressor blows through the filter. The procedure can be carried out at any service station or enterprise where there is an air compressor. You can also ask familiar KamAZ or ZiL drivers, whose trucks have a compressor with the ability to bleed air.

Thus, the fuel filter on VAZ cars may fail for the following reasons:

  • the malfunction is caused by clogging or failure of the sealing cuffs;
  • due to rusting of internal elements, which is explained by water getting inside the filter;
  • due to a broken latch, which leads to fuel leakage;
  • due to an air lock formed inside the system due to excessive pressure.

Timely and competent care of filters will extend the performance of the car. Replacing the purifier will make it possible to avoid difficulties in the operation of the fuel system.

How to replace the fuel filter on an injection VAZ 2109?

Fuel filters are designed to clean the fuel supplied to the engine from resinous impurities of water, dirt particles and sediments in the fuel tank. The reason is physical and chemical processes that cause the appearance of various types of contaminants.

Fuel filter VAZ 2109

Let's consider what consequences they can cause in a VAZ 21099,2109 car (injector). Resins negatively affect pipelines and injector bypass valves, causing the entire fuel system to suffer. The presence of water or condensate in the fuel provokes the formation of corrosion, damage to parts of the fuel supply system to the injector and can lead to breakdown of the cylinder-piston group.

Dirt clogs the fuel channels, and in combination with the presence of water in the fuel, even in winter it makes it difficult to start the engine, as it can freeze in the fuel line.

The fuel filter must be changed periodically, which will avoid many breakdowns of cars of the 21099,2109 series. The longevity of the filter depends on the driving style, the external environment where the VAZ is operated, the condition of the fuel system as a whole and, of course, first of all, on the quality of the fuel used.

Owners of VAZ 21099.2109 should know that it is recommended to change the fuel filter every 20 thousand kilometers. Considering that the fuel level at domestic gas stations is not the highest, it is advisable to replace the filter more often, since it becomes clogged with various types of impurities and dirt, which increases the load on the engine, reducing power. The fuel system will last longer if the fuel filter replacement procedure is carried out in a timely manner.

It is worth noting that replacing the VAZ 21099,2109 fuel filter is not particularly difficult and the driver can do this procedure without much experience in driving and operating a car. If you are encountering this problem for the first time, then to find out how to change the filter on a VAZ with an engine that has an injector installed, follow the recommendations below.

Replacing the fuel filter

Fuel filter for the power supply system of the injection engine of VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099 cars

The fuel filter is an element of the power supply system (fuel supply system) of the injection engine of VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099 cars.

Purpose of the fuel filter

The fuel filter in the power supply system of the injection engine of VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099 cars is designed to filter fuel (remove mechanical impurities) entering the main fuel line from the gas tank.
Location on the car
The fuel filter on VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099 cars is located under the bottom of the body, near the gas tank. It is built into the fuel supply line between the electric fuel pump in the gas tank and the fuel rail on the car engine.

Fuel filter device

The fuel filter consists of a metal housing with threaded fittings on both sides. Inside the filter there is a paper filter element that traps various foreign particles found in gasoline. From the fuel pump, fuel flows through a rubber hose to the filter inlet fitting.

Operating principle of the fuel filter

The electric fuel pump pumps gasoline from the fuel tank through a rubber hose to the inlet fitting of the fuel filter. In the filter housing, the filter element traps foreign particles present in gasoline. Next, the fuel flows through the filter outlet fitting into the metal tube of the main fuel line and then along it into the fuel rail with injectors on the engine. The direction of fuel flow is indicated by an arrow on the fuel filter housing.

Fuel filter malfunctions

— The main malfunction of the fuel filter is a decrease in its throughput due to clogging with foreign impurities present in gasoline. As a result, creating the necessary fuel pressure becomes problematic. There are jerks and dips in engine operation, unstable idling, the engine may stall both at idle and while driving, etc.

— In other cases, the fuel filter may, on the contrary, not filter out mechanical impurities in gasoline, but pass them into the fuel rail to the injectors. The occurrence of such a situation is possible due to its poor manufacturing or deformation from impact.

The frequency of replacing the fuel filter is 30,000 km. In a number of cases (constant use of low-quality fuel, a car with high mileage or a fuel tank that has not been cleaned for a long time, etc.)

Applicability of fuel filters in the power supply systems of the injection engine of VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099 cars

In the power supply system of the injection engine of VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099 cars, fuel filters 2112-1117010-01 (02, 03, 04, 05) of domestic production or their imported analogues are used (BOSH F0124, MANN WK612/5, Champion L240, ACDelco GF613 and etc.)

Notes and additions

— When removing the fuel filter from the car, you should be careful (protect your eyes), since the fuel in the fuel system is under pressure and splashes heavily.

The most common underlying causes of premature fuel filter failure

Replacing the fuel filter VAZ 2109 injector

We present them in the form of a list:

  • A well-known fact is that the service life of a particular component of a car depends on the degree of its quality. Because, frankly speaking, today there is no commission for the quality standard of technical products that would not allow for sale those technical products whose requirements do not correspond to those specified in the documentation.

Note. During the Soviet Union, quality control was taken over by the state. Today, formally, this role belongs to the national dealer, who is interested only in obtaining financial profit.

  • Many companies from China invest huge amounts of money in marketing, thanks to this they manage to find many dealers and sign long-term contracts with them.

Note. For example, the dealer himself (the owner of an auto parts store) in most cases is reluctant to understand his products from a technical point of view. Manufacturers take advantage of this, convincing them of the high quality of their parts, promising the same technical capabilities as European manufacturers, only at a significantly lower cost.

Replacing the fuel filter on a VAZ 21093

All these processes together lead to the emergence of countless handicrafts on the national market. The main reasons for premature replacement of the fuel filter:

  • the presence of a huge number of counterfeit fuel filters in auto parts stores;
  • overloading the filter with gasoline (extremely rare);
  • poor quality or completely incorrect installation of the fuel filter;
  • low quality of the fuel itself.

Objective reasons that allow us to establish the fact of purchasing a counterfeit fuel filter:

  • poor traction;
  • insufficient motor power;
  • reduction in speed;
  • sudden engine stall when turning on the ignition, etc.

Notes. In order to reduce the risk of purchasing a counterfeit fuel filter, you need to buy it only from reliable dealers who provide a warranty. If the car owner is a newbie, then you need to take the advice of friends who have repeatedly purchased any car components.

Replacing the fuel filter on an injection engine

The fuel filter on an injection engine is located on the bottom of the car under the trunk.

– Disconnect the minus terminal from the battery, release the pressure in the fuel system, wipe the fuel drive pipes and the fuel pump filter, unscrew the nuts that secure the ends to the filter.

– Loosen the nut that holds the filter and unscrew all the nuts from the tips. Carefully remove the tips from the filter; a little gasoline may spill.

– Press the clamp with the spring, remove the tip of the fuel wire from the pipe and loosen the clamp.

– You can unscrew the filter mounting clamp with a 10mm wrench. Remove the fine fuel filters under the gas tank and the coarse mesh.

– Look carefully and find where the fuel filter is located (located on the bottom of the car under the trunk) and then remove it from the holder and install a new fuel filter in its place.

– When installing, do not forget to replace the hose O-rings. Follow the direction of the arrow on the filter housing (it should show the direction of movement of gasoline), then attach the tubes into place and check if they are sealed. And if necessary, we fit the fuel pipes onto the filter more tightly.

You have replaced the VAZ 2114 fuel filter yourself!

Before starting to replace the fuel filter, keep a fire extinguisher near you, since gasoline is highly flammable; rags soaked in gasoline should be thrown away immediately after all work has been completed.

Replacing a fuel filter will not take much time and will not require any special skills in car repair. Therefore, you can do it yourself, without contacting a car service. This is standard procedure for servicing your car.

The following video shows the process of replacing the fuel filter on a VAZ 2114 car.

https://youtube.com/watch?v=1Hg2K6F8wgY

Instructions: how to change the fuel filter yourself on a VAZ 21099 with an injection engine

1. We park the car in a “pit” or on an overpass. Determine the location of the fuel filter.

2. Using a 17 and 19 wrench, grab the nuts on the fuel line fitting and on the filter itself.

3. Unscrew the first fitting, then the second. In this case, a little gasoline will leak out of the fuel line and from the filter itself (maximum 50-100 ml). Do not lose the rubber O-rings located at the connections between the fittings and the filter housing.

4. Now use a 10mm wrench to unscrew the filter clamp nut.

5. Remove the filter.

6. Install a new filter without confusing the direction of fuel flow.

7. Don't forget about the seals.

8. We grab the filter with a clamp and screw the fittings.
