Replacing the front suspension springs of a VAZ 2106

Replacement of front suspension springs on a VAZ 2105 car is carried out in case of mechanical damage, subsidence or to replace rubber cushions. Dismantling also takes place when performing various repairs, in which their presence will interfere with the progress of its implementation. To carry out repair work, prepare a standard set of tools and perform the following sequence of actions:

  • Drive the car onto a viewing hole or overpass.
  • Engage first gear, then place thrust blocks under the rear wheels and remove the wheel from the side to be repaired.
  • Next, dismantle the shock absorber - see How to remove front shock absorbers.
  • Slightly loosen the two nuts securing the control arm to the axle.
  • Now you need to disconnect the anti-roll bar from the lever; to do this, unscrew the two nuts securing its holder.
  • Unscrew the nut securing the ball joint pin, then use a special puller to compress the pin from the steering knuckle, but do not pull it out completely, that is, the nut should remain in the screwed position, but not tightened.
  • Since the spring is under pressure, we install a suitable jack, for example a hydraulic one, under the lower arm, but do not load the arm and completely unscrew the ball pin fastening nut.

  • Now you can carefully unload the suspension by lowering the jack and, in parallel, using a mounting blade, removing the end of the stabilizer from engagement with the cotter pins of the cage.
  • After that, having completely loosened the spring, we also remove the end of the spring from the lever cup using the same installation method and completely remove it and the rubber lining located on top.

  • Now you can begin installing the new spring. First check the condition of the rubber pads and, if necessary, replace them, fix them on the end of the new spring using insulating tape or copron threads, while making sure that the first turn of the spring fits neatly into the groove on the pad.
  • Next, prepare a special tightening device that needs to be used to compress the spring to such a state that it fits into place without any problems.
  • The device must be removed after the ball pin is installed and the anti-roll bar is secured.

So, to replace the suspension spring you must do the following:

  • drive onto an overpass or into a viewing hole
  • put the car in first gear and place chocks under the rear wheels
  • remove the wheel from the desired side
  • remove the shock absorber
  • slightly loosen the 2 nuts that secure the suspension arm to the axle
  • disconnect the anti-roll bar from the lever by unscrewing the 2 nuts securing its holder
  • unscrew the nut securing the ball joint pin
  • use a special puller to release the pin from the steering knuckle, but do not pull it out (i.e. the nut should be screwed in, but not tightened)
  • releasing the jack with a mounting spatula, disengage the end of the stabilizer from the engagement pins of the holder, thereby unloading the suspension
  • loosen the spring and use a mounting spatula to remove the end of the spring from the lever cup and completely remove it, as well as remove the rubber gasket located above
  • install a new spring
  • Before installation, check the condition of the rubber gaskets and replace them if necessary.
  • attach the gaskets to the spring with electrical tape or threads, while the first coil of the spring should fit perfectly into the groove of the gasket
  • Using a special spring tensioner, tighten the spring to such a size that it can easily fall into place
  • Only after the ball joint pin has been put on and the lateral stability stabilizer has been secured can the tensioning device be removed

As you can see, there is nothing complicated about replacing the front suspension springs on a VAZ 2105. Repair work on cars should be carried out without undue haste and following the sequence of dismantling and installation.

Algorithm for replacing the front springs of a VAZ 2107

Prepare the simplest tool for the job; every car owner who at least sometimes repairs his iron horse should have it.

  • A set of keys (you should have it in your trunk);
  • jack;
  • a brush with metal bristles;
  • wheel wrench;
  • hammer;
  • wire hook;
  • mount;
  • insulating tape.

The sequence for replacing the front springs is as follows:

1. Remove the shock absorber from the desired side and remove the wheel.

2. Next, you need to slightly unscrew the nuts securing the lower arm.

Attention! When performing work under a vehicle, do not forget about safety precautions; place wheel chocks under the wheels and supports under the car body.

Place a lifting device under the lower arm and lighten the suspension (this is necessary to simplify the task of removing the stabilizer).

3. Unscrew the pair of nuts that hold the fixing bracket on the stabilizer pad.

4. Now remove the retaining bracket from its place, and then the cushion (stabilizer bushing).

5. Slightly loosen the ball nut that secures the steering knuckle and the lower hinge pin. Be careful. The nut must be unscrewed until it coincides with the end of the pin. Once this happens, lower the jack that is located under the lower control arm slightly.

6. Take a hammer and make several strong (and most importantly, sharp) blows to the outer part of the fist. Thanks to this action, you will achieve the release of the pin from the rotary cam.

7. Pay attention to the lower arm. At the moment when the pin is knocked out, it will be on only one nut, you need to slightly raise the jack under the lower part of the lever. But there is no need to heavily load the suspension.

8. Unscrew the pin nut and lower the lower part of the lever as low as possible. Then, using a mounting tool, move the stabilizer (more precisely, its rod) over the stud. Now remove the jack and let the lever lower.

9. Take and make a hook out of wire and secure the upper lever with it. Please note that in this case there is no need to disconnect the steering knuckle. Try to mount the lever so that it is as high as possible - this will simplify access to the spring.

10. Pry the spring from below and pull it out from the bottom. There is a rubber spacer on the upper part of the support located on the body; remove it. If it is badly cracked, replace it. Now you have an idea of how to remove the front springs on a VAZ 2107.

Installing a new spring

When replacing springs with your own hands, no difficulties should arise. The only thing to consider is the presence of rust and dirt. Clean all threaded connections in advance and treat them with penetrating lubricant. The installation procedure is performed in reverse order:

  • Ties are placed on the new springs.
  • Twist the ties to reduce the length of the spring.
  • Secure the rubber spacer on the top using electrical tape.
  • After installing the new spring, carefully lift the lower arm with a jack.
  • Install the ball race and tighten the fastening bolts.
  • Replacing rear springs

    Replacing the rear springs of a VAZ 2107 is much easier than replacing the front ones. For this you will need:

    The replacement procedure is as follows:

    • unscrew the pressure regulator rod in the rear brake circuit;
    • unscrew the rear pipe tee fastening;

    • unscrew the lower shock absorber mount;
    • jack up the car and release the shock absorber and spring;

    • remove the spring along with the gaskets;
    • check the condition of the gaskets, replace if necessary;
    • install the spring with spacers and assemble the suspension parts in the reverse order of disassembly.

    Do-it-yourself replacement of VAZ 2107 springs

    The suspension design of the domestic VAZ 2107 car has springs, the main purpose of which is to ensure a smooth ride. Many owners install longer springs than standard in order to raise the car body. Over time, they sag, which makes it impossible to compensate for the load. Weak springs reduce ride comfort, worsen vehicle handling and lead to rapid wear of suspension elements. To prevent this from happening, they must be checked and changed in a timely manner. Let’s find out in more detail what it is to replace VAZ 2107 springs.

    What to do?

    If you find that the springs on the seven are broken, do not delay repairs. If you do not do it on time, then the destruction of other suspension components will begin along the chain, which will only make repairs more expensive. It is recommended to do all work in pairs - if on the front axle one spring is out of order, and the second is more or less “alive,” both need to be changed. Only in this case will you achieve maximum suspension efficiency.

    If there is no damage to the springs, but there is subsidence, spacers can be installed. But it is not recommended to get carried away with such modifications, as the car’s characteristics deteriorate. The likelihood of skidding increases, and the braking distance also becomes longer. As for comfort, it also suffers. And in domestic cars like the VAZ-2107, the conditions are already Spartan. And if the mitigation of impacts on the body suffers, then the driver and passengers will lose all their teeth.

    Removing the spring

    On both sides of the car, spring removal is carried out in the same way. When replacing the front springs of a VAZ, you need to have a minimum set of tools on hand. A screed is a must—you can’t do without it. Further actions:

  • Place the ties opposite each other and compress the spring as evenly as possible.
  • Using a 10mm wrench, unscrew the nuts that secure the stabilizer pad.
  • Completely dismantle the cushion and stabilizer bracket.
  • Loosen the lower ball joint to the control arm.
  • Lower the second jack located under the lever. Once the lever is lowered, the spring can be removed.
  • There is no point in pressing the ball joint out of the steering knuckle - this is a very difficult task and requires a puller. It will be much easier to unscrew the three bolts that secure the cage to the lever. The spring should be compressed as much as possible. Be sure to remove the spacer from the top cup. If it is damaged or deformed, it should be replaced.

    Replacement of front springs of VAZ-2107. Is there an effect?

    And the length from tip to tip is 37.2 cm.

    • Keys and heads for 13, 22
    • Central spring puller and ball joint remover (preferably)
    • Crowbar or large screwdriver, hammer, wire brush
    • WD-shka or other “liquid key”

    We load the suspension and remove the stabilizer cushion bracket, take out the cushion - we will also replace it with a new one.

    Now loosen the nut securing the lower ball joint pin to the steering knuckle and tear off the pin. We discussed how to do this in the previous article.

    It is worth keeping in mind that the puller can burst and the spring “shoot” or jump off the plate, so you need to work with it carefully!

    Now we move the end of the stabilizer up behind the mounting pin, fix the upper arm with the hub assembly with a wire or rope behind the bump stop so as not to damage the brake hose.

    We unscrew the nut securing the lower support, remove the finger from the fist and lower the lever down, carefully remove the spring and rubber spacer.

    Now let's inspect it for damage. As we can see, there are traces of corrosion and interturn wear. It is better to replace such a spring, as there is a risk of its breakage.

    Now, using a puller, we tighten the new spring and place the cups approximately under the second turn.

    We put a new rubber spacer on the spring and fix it with tape or tape so that the end of the rod rests against the recess on the spacer. We carefully place the spring between the levers, orient the lower end of the rod so that it, like the spacer, rests against the recess on the metal cup of the lever.

    Also, we put a new cushion on the stabilizer and install it on the lever.

    Signs of wear

    Before replacing springs, struts, and other suspension components, you need to determine whether they are damaged. Listen carefully to the shock absorbers and springs while driving on rough roads. The following signs indicate the need for repairs:

    • There are mechanical damage to the spring and defects. Failure is determined by visual inspection. It is advisable to do this on a viewing hole or overpass.
    • Significant reduction in spring length. Can be determined by the reduced ground clearance of the car. Most often, spring sag occurs when the car is carrying heavy loads or is driving with a trailer. The same situation applies to cars used in taxis.
    • It is in these two cases that replacement of suspension elements is required. The springs themselves do not break. This happens solely as a result of an accident, collisions with curbs, or the presence of internal defects.

    When it's time to replace

    There are several signs by which you can determine that it is time to replace the springs. These signs are:

    • Detection of damage and defects in the product design. This malfunction can be determined by visual inspection, but first you need to put the VAZ 2107 car on an overpass.
    • Their significant subsidence. If the vehicle's ground clearance decreases significantly, this indicates sagging of the devices in question. Springs quickly sag in such cases when the car is used to transport heavy loads every day. Also, those cars that are used as taxis also require frequent replacement of the devices in question.

    If you find a problem with the springs on a VAZ 2107, then you should replace them without delay. This will extend the life of other suspension elements and save money. It is recommended to replace devices in pairs, since replacing only one element will cause the body to skew, which will negatively affect driving. In some cases, spacers help when the springs have sagged but are not deformed. Experts believe that you should not get carried away with spacers, since the physical properties of a car with spacers are many times worse. As a result of such modifications, the suspension does not function correctly, which affects many factors: from control to comfort. Therefore, if necessary, it is better to replace the springs, both rear and front. We will learn how this is done on a VAZ 2107 from this material.

    Replacing the front springs of a VAZ 2107

    Replacing the front suspension elements on the “seven” is carried out according to the following scheme:

    1. First, you need to install the car on an inspection hole or overpass, and then begin to remove the wheels, having first jacked them up.
    2. The front shock absorber needs to be removed.
    3. The nuts that secure the lower arm to the axle are loosened.
    4. Using a second jack, you need to place it under this lever, thus adding the suspension load. This is done to make it easier to disconnect the stabilizer.
    5. At this moment, you can use special spring ties (if available) to secure the springs in a compressed state. This will make further removal actions much easier.

    The front springs of the VAZ 2107 need to be changed in pairs, just like the rear ones.

    Changing the rear springs on a VAZ 2107

    Replacing the rear springs of a VAZ 2107 is carried out according to the following principle:

    1. Install the jack and remove the wheel.
    2. The pressure regulator rod in the brake system is unscrewed.
    3. The rear pipe tee bracket is unscrewed.
    4. The shock absorber fastener at the bottom is unscrewed.
    5. Jack up the car and thereby release the shock absorber and spring fasteners.
    6. Now you can remove the spring, which also has a rubber spacer. If the spacers are deformed, they should be replaced.
    7. Replace the removed springs with new ones, installing all the removed parts in the reverse order of removal. When installing products, it is important to purchase special ties, as shown in the photo below.

    Replacing the rear springs is much easier and faster, so it will take half a day to replace all four products.

    What springs to install

    It remains to figure out the question of what springs to put on the VAZ 2107? Instead of standard products, you can install reinforced devices. The replacement principle is similar, but the result will be significant. The suspension with reinforced devices will become stiffer, but it is important to know that at the same time you will need to install new shock absorbers (more powerful).

    Many car owners are wondering what springs are best to install on a VAZ 2107? The best option for a rear-wheel drive sedan is products marked 2101. They are quickly and easily installed in standard places and do not require modifications. When choosing products, you need to pay attention to their manufacturer. There are many manufacturers, both domestic and imported, but it is important to pay attention to the cost. When choosing, pay attention to the stiffness class of the springs, the number of turns and their thickness. There are two types of hardness:

    1. Type A, whose length exceeds 273 cm. They are red in color and are the toughest.
    2. Type B. Their length is up to 273 cm and their color is green. Such products have reduced rigidity.

    In conclusion, it should be noted that the higher quality the product, the longer it will last. Therefore, when choosing, it is important to analyze for what purpose you need a car: to transport cargo or simply carry passengers.

    Design Features

    When replacing VAZ springs, some motorists try to choose long or short copies. The degree of development is different for everyone, so some individuals, without going into details, simply cut the springs, shortening them by several turns. Of course, this is wrong - the operation of the entire suspension is immediately disrupted. This affects the functioning of the shock absorber, even the ease of control.

    The service life of suspension elements is significantly reduced. But installing extended springs will not give the car any advantages. It is reasonable to do this only in cases where the car is operated in extreme conditions and its suspension is constantly loaded. During operation, even steel springs sag, which affects the ease of control. Therefore, sometimes it is necessary to diagnose the suspension and replace worn parts.
