Front suspension device Lada Kalina

Removing the Kalina shock absorber strut

You will need : remove the front wheels, disconnect the tie rod ends from the steering arm (see “removing the steering rack”), prepare a 13-size socket wrench, a 17-size socket and socket wrench, and a flat-head screwdriver.
Comment

If you later need to disassemble the strut, then loosen the shock absorber rod nut with a 22 ring wrench, holding the rod with a 9 open end wrench.

Procedure:

  1. Loosen the 3 nuts securing the upper strut support to the body using a 13mm spanner.
  2. Unscrew the upper and lower bolts securing the steering knuckle to the strut using a 17 socket wrench, holding the bolts from turning with a 17 socket wrench. Remove the washers. To minimize the violation of the camber angle of the front wheels, first apply paint marks to the upper mounting bolt.
  3. Use a screwdriver to disengage the brake hose and steering knuckle from the strut bracket.
  4. Remove the shock absorber Lada Kalina.

By the way, you can remove the front struts without disturbing the camber angles; to do this, after disconnecting the tie rod ends, you will also need to remove the ball joint, the outer CV joint from the wheel hub and the caliper. Then remove the shock absorber strut along with the steering knuckle.

How to check a support bearing

The easiest way to check the performance of a support bearing is with the help of an assistant. You need to remove the plastic cover from the strut cup, there you will see the bearing mounting nut. You need to put your hand on the support and ask an assistant to rock the car. As soon as the car starts to rock, you will immediately feel the bearing working.

If you hear a knocking or squeaking sound in the support, it is most likely faulty and needs to be replaced.

Installing front struts on Kalina

We install the rack in the reverse order, with the mark (arrow) on the upper support facing the front of the car.

We tighten the nuts securing the upper support to the body to a torque of 19.6-24.2 Nm (2.0-2.4 kgf-m). Before tightening the nuts of the bolts securing the steering knuckle to the strut, align the marks on the eccentric bolt and the bracket. Tighten the bolt nuts to a torque of 77.5-96.1 Nm (7.9-9.8 kgf-m).

Replacing the support bearing Kalina

We jack up the car, put the stops on, remove the wheel, but it’s best to first loosen the strut nut so that you don’t have to do this later. Next, I unscrewed the bolt of the stabilizer link, installed the jack and lifted the ball joint. Next you need to put on the spring ties and compress. But I couldn't do it.

I went the other way, unscrewed the rack and lowered it down, after which I managed to compress the spring. Next we remove the amplifier, the strut and the bearing itself. Look inside the glass; it is best to clean out all the dirt from there with a rag. It won't hurt to fill it with Movil. Then we begin to collect everything. We put on the rubber band, then install the bearing, support and amplifier.

Generally speaking, nothing complicated, we carry out the assembly exactly in the reverse order. Of course, don’t forget to fasten the stabilizer link. If you are disassembling and replacing a bearing, it is best to do everything right away neatly and cleanly, clean it from dirt and dust.

Lada Kalina Sedan › Logbook › Installation of strut supports on Lada Kalina with Grants

Hi all! I want to tell you a story about replacing the strut supports on a viburnum and installing supports with grants. It would seem that what is the problem here? Take it and put it on! I’ll digress a little from this sparkling topic and add some lyrics. The time had come to repair the chassis of the Lada Kalina car, and I wanted something new. New struts, bought a long time ago, were available, there was one problem, they were for a cone-shaped spring, and the old struts had a barrel-shaped spring. I went to see a traveler I knew, and luckily he had a pair of pyramid-shaped springs in excellent condition. Paid 1t. wooden ones, I enthusiastically went into auto parts to buy the rest of the spare parts. Supports, strut supports, ball bearings, interior blocks, and other crap for overhauling the chassis. I didn’t even consider the Kalinovsky stock supports as an option, because I wanted something new. I looked at the SS20-Kalina support, stock grant.

Having literally traveled all over the city, knocking off dozens of rapids, it was not possible to find exactly the same washer, and after searching, it was decided to install the Priora top washer.

I assembled the stand and installed it! I think this is all due to the poor quality of the puck. I checked everything and went. Everything is normal, what a joy, but a week later the same thing happens, but on the right side. Now, without thinking for a long time in a bad mood, I do the same thing, but on the right side. I observe the same thing, the prop is normal, but the washer is screwed.

Okay, I’ll replace this nasty rubber band, but it’s not a fact that it will help 100%, once again I wouldn’t have the patience to withstand such a mess. I started looking for information about granto supports and racks on the net. I didn’t find anything, the auto parts stores shrug their shoulders, but in my heart there is hope that the glass under the support should be made differently, because the rubber part is larger and located lower. Although everyone in the stores and tradesmen say that it’s like crazy there, of course I didn’t believe them and didn’t know what to do.

Shock absorber struts

This is the main element of the suspension, since it is with their help that vibrations are damped while driving on uneven roads. The struts on the Kalina consist of a metal body in which a telescopic shock absorber is located. The system is hydraulic and works in both directions. When repairing the Lada Kalina, special attention must be paid to the condition of the suspension elements. Not only comfort, but also safety depends on it.

Between the strut and the body there is a coil spring and an upper support bearing. A bracket is welded to the body on the rack, with which the steering knuckle is attached. Approximately near the middle of the rack there is a swing arm that connects to the steering end. A little higher is the lower cup, into which the spring rests.

Lada Kalina - replacing the support bearing with your own hands

Before disassembling and removing the Kalina front strut with upper supports, be sure to study the structure of the unit. The diagram shows the serial numbers (articles) of the front suspension components.

To remove the support bearings of the front struts of the Lada Kalina you will need a set of tools: 1. A set of open-end or ring wrenches: 9, 17, 19, 22. 2. A 13 socket with a ratchet. 3. Steering wheel end puller, vice, torque wrench (if possible). 4. Jack. 5. Shock absorber spring clamps. 6. Pliers. 7. Hammer. 8. WD-40 lubricant.

How to remove the support bearing on Kalina - step by step guide

Replacing the Kalina front strut supports begins preparing the car. Place the car on a flat surface, if there is a lift or pit available. Engage first gear and release the parking brake. Dismantling sequence in order:

  1. We unscrew the wheel bolts, then raise the car with a jack or a lift as in our case.
  2. We gain access to the brake disc, but you don’t need to remove it, nor do you need to unscrew the hub locknut.
  1. Let's move on to the swing arm and tie rod. First, remove the cotter pin from the fastener. Next, unscrew the nut itself.
  2. After this, use a tip remover to press it out of the hole in the lever or, as a last resort, use a hammer. We install the device, tighten the thread and remove the tip.
  1. Now disconnect the brake hose and speed sensor wire from the front strut.
  2. Next, we find two bolts securing the strut to the steering knuckle and lubricate them with penetrating lubricant.
  1. To unscrew the nuts, we use a 17 socket wrench, as well as a head with a ratchet.
  2. The bolts will have to be knocked out; use a wooden guide to avoid damaging the threads.
  1. The lower part of the module is freed, let's move on to the upper part. Unscrew the three fastenings of the front pillar to the body glass.
  2. When unscrewing the last nut, hold the stand, or place a support under it, for example, a removed wheel. After this, remove the module with the support and shock absorber assembly.
  1. We install two ties on the springs of the removed suspension module. As shown in the photo, we compress the shock absorber spring evenly on both sides.
  1. We continue to compress the shock absorber until the upper support is freed from the spring tension, and only then unscrew the rod nut. We use the key at 19.
  1. Now we remove the upper part of the support (cup), under which the “support” is located. We remove the old part and proceed to replacement.

Replacing the support bearing for Kalina (VAZ 1118, 1119, 1117)

Replacing and installing support bearings on Kalina begins with checking the condition of the remaining elements of the module: lower cup, power buffer, bump stop, corrugation, shock absorber springs. They will need to be replaced if necessary. How to correctly install the support bearing on Kalina and change it is described in order below.

  1. Before assembling the front jay, make sure that the ends of the shock absorber spring rest against the special tabs at the lower and upper cups.
  2. We place a rubber gasket on the top cup, with a new “support” on top of it, and orient the product upwards with the markings.

Front pillar elements

On the Lada Kalina car, the struts can be equipped with conical or barrel springs. It all depends on what equipment the car has. The lower coil of the spring rests against the support cup, which is tightly welded to the rack. The upper coil rests on the cup, which is attached to the shock absorber rod.

The rod is secured to the upper support bearing, which, in turn, is screwed to the body using three studs. Thanks to the bearing, the shock absorber rod rotates inside the support. This allows the wheels of the car to turn. A boot must be installed on the shock absorber rod, which protects the inner surface of the element from contamination.

Rotary mechanisms

When repairing the Lada Kalina, it is necessary to take into account that after intervention in the design of the front suspension, it will be necessary to adjust the camber and toe of the wheels. A swing arm is installed on the shock absorber strut. Moreover, on two identical racks its position will be different. This lever has a hole into which the tie rod end is installed. Its length can be changed using a specially designed coupling.

The steering knuckle is secured to the front strut bracket using two bolts and nuts. The upper bolt has an oval washer, with which the camber of the wheels is adjusted. By rotating the bolt, you move the steering knuckle relative to the front strut. At the bottom it is secured by a ball joint to the wishbone of the suspension.

Replacing support bearings on Lada Kalina

We stock up on tools:

  • jack and wheel wrench;
  • pliers and open-end wrenches (“9”; “13”, “17”, “19” and “22”).
  • a puller that allows you to disconnect the steering tips;
  • a set of spring ties (2 pcs.).

Bearing replacement procedure

  1. We install the Lada Kalina on a level area and brake it with the handbrake and the engaged gear in the box.
  2. We loosen the wheel tightening torque and jack up the body.
  3. We remove the wheel.
  4. Unscrew the nut of the steering unit tip.
  5. Unscrew it (key to “19”).
  6. Using a puller, remove the ball pin from the socket in the swing arm of the strut. If there is no puller, the finger can be knocked out.
  7. Disconnect the stand from the steering axle. Use a key set to “19” to turn 2 nuts. If the bolt heads need to be supported, then use the key set to “17”.
  8. Using a “13” wrench (preferably a socket), unscrew the fasteners (3 nuts) of the support to the body cup.
  9. We remove the support together with the shock-absorbing strut.
  10. We compress the spring with zip ties until the upper part is released.
  11. Unscrew the central nut of the support using a “22” wrench. Use the key set to “9” to hold the rod.
  12. After removing the support, we resort to disassembling it. We remove the front strut support bearing and change it.
  13. We put the unit back together and proceed to a similar procedure on the other side of the car.

Suspension arms

The Kalina front suspension arm is kept from moving by a stretcher. This extension is secured at the rear edge to the lever with rubber-metal hinges. The front edge of this stretch is secured with a cushion to a special bracket, which is screwed to the car body. You can change the number of washers that are located in the rear and front mounts of this extension. This way you can adjust the angle of inclination of the wheel axis in the longitudinal direction.

The stabilizer is connected to the front suspension arms. Its middle part is secured with brackets and rubber pads on the body. When one lever moves, movement is transmitted through the stabilizer to the second. This can significantly reduce the swaying of the car when driving on uneven roads, as well as reduce roll when cornering.

The new Lada Kalina practically does not need to be serviced; it is only advisable to occasionally check the alignment angles of the front wheels. It is also recommended to carry out suspension diagnostics from time to time in order to identify breakdowns in the early stages.

How to replace longitudinal tension

In order to adjust the longitudinal tilt angle of the axle, you must contact a service center. At the same time, they will definitely remove the stretch. Therefore, you should not change it yourself; it is better to do this immediately before adjustment. But, if you remove the old stretcher and install it in place, in order to minimize the error in adjusting the caster angles of the axle, you need to count and record the number of washers that were located on the rear and front edges of the stretcher before removal.

The replacement procedure is as follows:

  1. Remove the bracket that secures the suspension extension.
  2. Use a 24mm wrench to keep the extension from turning. And with the second key you need to unscrew the nut that secures the front end to the wishbone.
  3. Remove the washer from the brace and remove the rear edge from the hinge.
  4. Remove the adjustment washers completely.

Installation of the longitudinal extension is performed in exactly the reverse order. It is necessary that the chamfers on the adjusting washers face the extension. After replacement, it is necessary to adjust the wheel alignment angles. This is a mandatory condition if the Kalina suspension is being repaired.

How to replace the ball

The ball joint is one of the most important elements of the suspension of any car. It can be restored, but this is not recommended, since the quality of restored products is much worse than new ones. Even on a new Lada Kalina, the ball joint can fail.

In this case, it is necessary to repair the suspension. The following manipulations are performed for this:

  1. Completely remove the front wheel of the vehicle and raise the side to be repaired using a jack.
  2. Treat all threaded connections with penetrating lubricant.
  3. Unscrew the nut that is screwed onto the hinge pin.
  4. Remove the two bolts that secure the ball joint race to the steering knuckle.
  5. Install the puller.
  6. Tighten the puller bolt, thereby removing the pin from the hole in the lever.

If you plan to install a ball joint that has been in use, you need to remove the boot from it and inspect it for damage. If it is in normal condition, then it is necessary to put new lubricant inside the boot. Installation of the ball is performed in reverse order.

Replacing the front strut (shock absorber) on a Lada Kalina: photo, video

The front suspension system on Lada Kalina cars is quite unpretentious in operation, but sometimes it in general and the front shock absorbers in particular require replacement.

The video shows the process of replacing the front struts on Kalina:

Required tool for replacement

  • Jack.
  • Wheel chocks.
  • Hammer.
  • Mount.
  • Socket wrench "22".
  • Socket heads for “13”, “17”, “19”, or union sockets with the same parameters.
  • Open-end wrench set to "9".
  • Balloon wrench.
  • Collar.
  • Knob extension.
  • Pliers.
  • Lubricant (WD-40 – approx.).
  • Spring tie.
  • Screwdriver.
  • Rags.

If only one shock absorber fails, you will still have to change a pair, so the order in which the work is performed does not matter.

Step-by-step procedure for removing the shock absorber on Kalina

We have already written about replacing the rear shock absorbers.

  1. First of all, open the hood and, using a ring wrench set to “22” and an open-end wrench to “9”, engage the nut securing the support to the rack and turn it. When the fastening becomes loose, do not unscrew it completely.
  2. Then, using a jack, we hang the front wheel and remove it. We place wheel chocks under the rear wheels.
  3. We remove the brake hose from the mounting groove on the rack and move it to the side.
    Hoses are marked with arrows
  4. We apply lubricant to all connections, this applies to the fastening of the strut and steering knuckle, steering tip.
  5. After waiting a few minutes, you can begin dismantling.
  6. Having disconnected the cotter pin and unscrewed the nut from the steering end using a pry bar and a hammer, we remove it from the place of fixation.
If you can’t remove the tip right away, you can pry it off with a pry bar
  7. Then we unscrew the strut mount from the steering knuckle using the heads at “17” and “19”.
An air gun will be useful to unscrew these bolts.
  8. At the next stage, it may be difficult that after unscrewing the nut, the bolts may remain in place. This issue can only be resolved by generously applying lubricant, followed by knocking it out and turning it from the installation sites. (As a wedge, you can use a bolt of the smallest diameter - approx.).
  9. When all the nuts are unscrewed and the bolts are knocked out, all that remains is to remove the three support nuts.
The order in which the nuts are removed does not matter
  10. Of the three nuts, we do not immediately remove only one until the strut is disconnected from the steering knuckle. And after fixing the stand with your hand, unscrew this nut.
  11. When we have the stand in our hands, all that remains is to disassemble it correctly. And of course you should start by tightening the springs using special ties. (In order to avoid distortion, we tighten the springs evenly in turn on each side - approx.).
  12. It will be noticeable that the spring no longer rests against the strut support - this is a sign that it is already sufficiently tightened.
  13. Now you can unscrew the nut securing the support and remove the support itself along with the bearing.
This is what the stand looks like when removed
  14. Then, when the support is removed, we take out the spring.
  15. Now all that remains is to remove the boot and bump stop from the strut rod. (Although you don’t have to do this if all the spare parts are new).

This completes the procedure for removing the front strut.

Step-by-step assembly procedure for the front pillar

  1. The first thing we do is put the bumper and boot on the new rack.
New rack, more comfortable to work with new spare parts
  2. We install sound insulators on the racks (if available).
  3. We put on a new (or old) spring.
Please note that the lower part of the spring must fit into the recess on the strut body. The strut spring is in its seat
  4. We take a new support with a support bearing and fix it on the rod, putting on the support fastening nut.
    Stand assembly
  5. Make sure that the upper part of the spring is in place and that there are no distortions.
  6. When everything is checked, you can remove the ties and begin installing it on the car.
  7. We carry out further work in exactly the reverse order, starting with the three cup nuts in the engine compartment.
  8. When attaching the strut to the steering knuckle, it is best to use new bolts of the same diameter with new self-locking nuts.
    New rack assembled and installed

We carry out exactly the same work on the other side of the car, since the work process is already familiar, everything will go much faster.

Signs of wear

The first signs that it is time to change the front struts will be their so-called “skips” on rough roads, the characteristic noise they will make and, of course, the presence of oil leaks on the body.

Leaks on the strut indicate the need to replace it

IMPORTANT!

Please accept this information as mandatory! After you have carried out work on installing new front struts on the Lada Kalina, you should immediately visit a vehicle technical inspection station to carry out work on the vehicle's wheel alignment, since during the work all the previously established angles were violated. Neglecting this can cause not only rapid and uneven wear of tires and mechanisms, but also lead to a traffic accident.

Replacing the lever

In order to replace the front suspension arm on the Kalina, you must perform the following manipulations:

  1. Unscrew the bolts securing the wheel, first lifting the side to be repaired.
  2. Remove the engine protection.
  3. Remove the bolts that secure the ball joint to the knuckle.
  4. Remove the bolt that secures the stabilizer link to the arm.
  5. Unscrew the nut that secures the transverse arm of the bracket to the body, and then remove the bolt.
  6. Write down the number of washers.
  7. The extension must be kept from turning using a 24mm wrench. Using the same exact key, you need to unscrew the nut that secures the rear edge of the extension.
  8. Remove the support washers from the rear edge. After this, you can dismantle the lower arm along with the ball joint.
  9. Remove the adjusting and thrust washers from the brace.

If it is necessary to replace the ball joint, it must be removed from the lever using a vice. Reassembling the entire assembly is done in reverse order. Tightening the threaded connections should only be done after the vehicle is installed on the wheels.

How is the replacement made?

On behalf of a specialist, I will say that there is no need to spare money on quality spare parts. Let's start replacing these parts on the Lada Kalina car. To begin, raise the car to a convenient height, unscrew it, and remove the wheels. Now we need to remove the cotter pin that prevents it from unscrewing, and unscrew the 19 nut that secures the steering tip to the bipod.

To remove the steering tip we use a special puller. After this, we proceed to unscrew the rack itself. To do this, disconnect the ABS sensor, if there is one, and the brake hose so that they do not interfere. Now unscrew the part to be replaced from the steering knuckle.

It happens that the fastening bolts do not come out well, and this requires a lot of effort. Therefore, be prepared for such difficulties.

We do the same on the other side of the car. We see that the rack is completely inoperative, oil has leaked out of it. Sometimes people only replace the rack that has failed. But it is recommended to change both parts, since soon the second one will also require replacement. To finally remove the part, you need to unscrew the three nuts by 13. Now you can pull it out.

How to replace a rack

If there is a knock in the front suspension of the Kalina, then this may be the cause of failure of any element. Therefore, it is necessary to diagnose and check all components. If at least one shock-absorbing strut has become unusable, two need to be replaced at once. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Raise the wheel using a jack and remove it.
  2. Disconnect the tie rod end from the lever on the rack. To do this, use pliers to remove the cotter pin and unscrew the nut with a 19mm wrench. After this, install the puller and remove the hinge from the hole.
  3. If you plan to install a new rack assembly, then you do not need to perform any unnecessary actions. But if you need to remove the spring, you need to unscrew the nut that secures the shock absorber rod in the support bearing.
  4. Loosen the three nuts that secure the upper support to the body.
  5. When installing new shock absorber struts, the toe-in of the front wheels will be disrupted. The installation angles can be adjusted only by eye, so that after repair you can go to a service station for adjustments.
  6. Remove the bolts that secure the strut to the steering knuckle.
  7. Remove both bolts and washers.
  8. Move the brake hose aside.
  9. Use a pry bar to move the steering knuckle down.
  10. Finally unscrew all the nuts securing the support bearing to the body.

Installation of the shock absorber strut is carried out in the reverse order. If you are not changing the struts, but are repairing them (replacing the inner race, oil, seals), then it is best to outline the position of the strut relative to the steering knuckle. This will avoid the costly procedure of adjusting wheel camber angles.

We change bearings correctly!

Actually, there are no difficulties in changing the bearing on Kalina. The main thing is to follow the step-by-step instructions that we will give below, and you will be able to deal with this trouble without any problems. So, to replace these components you need:

  1. Place the car on a flat surface and put it in gear.
  2. Remove the wheel from the side from which the bearing will be replaced.
  3. Remove the tie rod end nut. To do this, you will need a 19 mm wrench and pliers for removing the cotter pins.
  4. Use a special puller to remove the tip pin from the stand. If you don’t have a puller at hand, you can knock it out by prying it from below with a small crowbar.
  5. We tighten the nuts securing the strut to the steering knuckle. To do this we will need a 19mm wrench and possibly a 17mm wrench to support the bolt heads.
  6. Remove the nuts securing the shock absorber to the body. To do this, use a 13 mm socket wrench.
  7. We remove the shock absorber, install it on the tie spring and compress it until its upper part appears.
  8. Remove the nut of the upper shock absorber support. To do this you will need keys for 9 and 22.
  9. We are replacing the bearing.
  10. We assemble and install the shock absorber in the reverse order.

As you can see, the procedure is absolutely elementary and will not take much time; the most important thing is to do everything in accordance with the steps indicated above. If any points remain unclear to you, it is advisable to watch the video instructions for replacing the support bearing with and without removing the strut. Remember, you should not delay in eliminating malfunctions of this kind, because they can lead to more serious consequences, and you will need to spend a lot of money to eliminate them.

Front suspension Lada Kalina

Lada Kalina first appeared on the Russian market on November 18, 2004. It was with this car that a new era in the development of the Volga auto giant began.

This machine was produced until 2013, and its total circulation reaches 600,000 pieces. The car has become new in everything, from the platform to the ergonomics of the interior. The front suspension of this car is independent, MacPherson type, which is a significant advance for the Lada company.

Front suspension device

The front suspension of the Lada Kalina is independent on MacPherson struts. This suspension is the most common in the automotive world for its price and acceptable characteristics for this price. Previously, Lada used this suspension, for example, in Lada Samara, but it was much poorer in equipment than MacPherson, although it was 90% similar to it.

So, the Lada Kalina suspension consists of the following components:

  1. Stabilization bar;
  2. Brackets for securing the stabilization rod;
  3. Cross arm mountings;
  4. Front suspension arm;
  5. SPU (anti-roll bar) bases;
  6. Telescopic front suspension strut;
  7. Ball-shaped supports;
  8. Kulaga;
  9. Longitudinal stretch;
  10. Stretch mounts.

The suspension includes coil-type and conical springs, they are not in the photo. The springs are located above the suspension strut. Thanks to them and the shock absorber, the car's ride and handling are ensured. The spring is made of steel with a low carbon content; it softens shocks, bumps and bumps. When the car hits an obstacle, the wheel becomes virtually completely out of control, which is a problem. A spring is needed to return the wheel to its place. A shock absorber is necessary to dampen vibrations after the wheel returns to its normal position. The front suspension arm removes the roll and holds the wheel on itself, and the front suspension arm is also an element of setting the wheel in its place when hitting obstacles. The SPU strut is necessary to connect the body and suspension. This element equalizes the vibrations of the body and suspension, which allows the car to move without problems with tilting when turning.

Operating principle

On the Lada Kalina, MacPherson suspension has improved ride quality. Starting with Kalina, all new AvtoVAZ models began to be equipped with MacPherson strut suspension. When driving, the level of impact of a bad road on the body is much more effectively reduced, making driving a car much more comfortable than, for example, a VAZ 2109, where a similar type of suspension is installed.

Thus, the independent MacPherson suspension consists of two axle shafts, allowing the wheels to be practically independent of each other. This means that the wheels, when one of them hits a bump, a depression or something else, do not change the level of inclination, as is the norm in semi-independent and dependent suspensions.

Differences between the front suspension of Kalina and previously produced AvtoVAZ cars

All AvtoVAZ cars had a MacPherson strut suspension at the front, but it was significantly different from those used in the 70s, 80s and 90s by Ford, Fiat, Volkswagen, etc. So, the main differences between the MacPherson strut suspension and the suspensions of Lada models until 2004 are concluded as follows:

  • Instead of a bearing, a bushing is mounted in the MacPherson.
  • In MacPherson, the ball bearing has a larger radius, and the design also differs. Now it is located in the upper part between the support and the spring element in a compressed state, which perfectly helps to remove knocks when moving.
  • When the wheels turn, the front suspension strut, or rather its body, rotates with the spring simultaneously. When this happens, the shock absorber rod remains motionless.

REPLACING THE FRONT STRUTS OF A LADA KALINA WITH YOUR OWN HANDS

Hello, readers of the blog Rtiivaz.ru. Today we will look at the front shock absorber strut of the Lada Kalina car. We will describe how to identify faults and in what order to replace the Kalina front strut with your own hands.

On the blog, I previously published an article about car suspension. There was such a chapter as “MACPHERSON SUSPENSION”. It said that the main element of this type of suspension is the shock absorber strut, also called the swing plug. As a reminder of the article, I provide a link to this article here.

Now it’s time to look in more detail at the design of the front strut on the Lada Kalina. Below is a schematic illustration of the Kalina front strut assembly.

Look carefully at the detailed drawing of the front strut of the Lada Kalina to make the location of the parts more clear. From the drawing it can be seen that the front strut on Kalina includes a shock absorber, a helical conical spring, a compression stroke buffer made of polyurethane foam material and an upper support, which is attached to the mudguard cup with three self-locking nuts.

The Kalina shock absorber is attached to the steering knuckle with two bolts at the bottom. The upper one, of which is eccentric. With its help, the camber of the front axle is adjusted.

The design of the Kalina's upper support differs from the previous VAZ 2108, 2110 models. In the Kalina's support, instead of a pressed-in thrust bearing, there is a steel bushing welded into the rubber mass of the support itself, thereby being, as it were, one piece with the support.

Kalina uses a support ball bearing, which has a larger diameter and a different design compared to other types of front shock absorber struts. The thrust bearing is located between the upper support and the spring. Under the weight of the car, it is constantly in a compressed position, as a result of which all gaps and knocks are eliminated.

Knock in the front suspension of Lada Kalina

Many motorists dread the day when strange knocking noises appear in the suspension, especially the front suspension, which increases with increasing speed. Of course, there is reason to worry, but at the same time, a car’s suspension is a strong and reliable unit that will clearly withstand a few more kilometers to a service station or garage, where it can be diagnosed.

There are four main reasons for the occurrence of knocks and squeaks in the front suspension of the Lada Kalina. Of the three possible causes of knocking, two of them can be eliminated independently.

So, the first reason why a knocking sound may occur in the suspension is the quality of the road surface. Yes, suspensions, even the most ideal and new ones, can squeak and knock on a bad road, even if this has not been observed before. To test this theory, you should drive onto a well-paved road and drive a few hundred meters; if there is no knocking, everything is fine with the suspension; if not, look at the second reason.

The second reason for the knocking sound, if it is accompanied by vibration in the steering wheel, is a malfunction of the steering, or rather the steering rack, or thinning of the brake discs. If the discs can be replaced independently, then in the case of steering, if you are not a level 80 mechanic, it is better not to flirt with it right away bring the car to the service station.

The third reason is the springs that have lost their tone, as a result of which the car body practically hits the suspension. You should not deal with this problem on your own - it is better to immediately take the car to a service station or service center, since self-repair may seriously damage the front suspension strut.

The fourth reason is a worn-out silent block, which is designed to dampen vibrations and knocks when driving. You can replace the silent block yourself; see the step-by-step replacement of the silent block in the Lada Kalina mono in the next paragraph.

Replacing front suspension silent blocks

Replacing the silent blocks of the Lada Kalina front suspension is necessary after 15-17,000 km, otherwise noises and knocks may be observed when driving. In most cases, the loss of its functions is observed after 15-17,000 km; knocking noises that appeared during this period of kilometers are a problem of faulty silent blocks.

Silent block

The silent block replacement diagram looks like this:

  • The machine is placed above a hole or ditch in order to be able to comfortably see the entire suspension. The movers are fixed by the wheels, we put the car itself on the handbrake, then it’s worth checking again that the car is stationary.
  • Use a jack to lift the car and remove the front wheel.
  • After this, you should fix the bolts of the ball joint with your hands, after which its fastenings are removed.;
  • The SPU nut is unscrewed, before this the ball-type support is knocked out into the lower part, after these manipulations the bolts are removed.
  • After removing the bolts, the sleeve blocking the lever is pulled out. After pulling out the bushing, the lever is pulled out.
  • There are marks on the lever that indicate the direction of installation of new silent blocks; this should be taken into account when installing new blocks.
  • The silent blocks must be lubricated at the point of contact with the lever. Using a vice or pliers, apply pressure to the blocks until they fall off.

The diagram is approximate and is for informational purposes to understand how many manipulations need to be made to replace silent blocks.

SIGNS OF FRONT STRUT DAMAGES

  1. The appearance of knocking noises when driving over uneven surfaces in the area of the pillar. This happens when the thrust bearing has become disintegrated and is not performing its function properly. This also happens if the coil spring bursts.
  2. When hitting an obstacle, the car sways for some time due to the fact that the shock absorber itself does not dampen the vibrations.
  3. During a visual inspection, if you see that the strut is wet on a dry road, this means that the front shock absorber has lost its tightness. Oil leaks out of it.

REPLACING STRUTS ON KALINA VAZ 1117, 1118, 1119

  1. Wrenches for 17, 19 and 22, preferably ring ones. It is easier to remove old threads with box wrenches. You can, of course, use socket heads with similar parameters.
  2. A pry bar and a hammer will make it easier to separate the lower part of the shock absorber from the steering knuckle.
  3. Wheelbrace for removing and installing wheels.
  4. Pliers.
  5. An open-end wrench to hold the rod while unscrewing the top nut.
  6. A 13mm socket head with a wrench, or better yet, a ratchet (it makes it faster to unscrew and tighten the nuts).
  7. Spring ties.

It would be a good idea to prepare WD-40 lubricant or something similar, just in case the threads are too stuck and the nut or bolt cannot be unscrewed. You also need a jack, better than two, or some kind of reliable support, in case the car tilts and falls off the support. You will have to work hard with a hammer and a pry bar, the body will swing and therefore additional support is needed for insurance.

Now you can safely unscrew the wheel nuts and remove the wheel. The brake hose is attached to the strut, so it needs to be released from the mount so that it does not interfere when we remove the strut. Now we will need WD-40; we need to treat all the bolts and nuts that will have to be unscrewed. The main thing is to spray on the lower nuts and bolts of the shock absorber that secure the assembly to the steering knuckle.

We remove the steering tip nut and hit the eyelet into which the ball pin of the tip is inserted with strong blows, while inserting a pry bar between the steering tip and its mount on the rack. If you have a special puller, you can press out the finger using it. Unscrew the two self-locking nuts securing the shock absorber to the swing arm. To do this, we use keys 17 and 19. It is better to use similar heads and knobs.

After removing the nuts, it happens that the bolts do not come out. They have to be knocked out. You must first knock them out through a wooden block so as not to spoil the thread, and then, using a punch with a smaller diameter, knock out the bolt when it is already sunk into the steering knuckle.

DISASSEMBLING THE FRONT STRUT KALINA

Before you start disassembling the front strut on Kalina, you need to compress the springs so that they do not “shoot” when unscrewing the top nut. To do this, use spring ties. They come in different types, but the principle of operation is the same for all. For clarity, a photo of a spring tie of one type is given below:

Spring ties

We place the ties on both sides of the spring, put the hooks on the coils, then turn the pins with a wrench, evenly tightening them on both sides until the spring no longer rests against the gasket.

Next, unscrew the top nut of the shock absorber rod. Then you can easily remove the strut support on Kalina along with the bearing and other elements of the upper support. We remove the spring, and then remove the compression stroke buffer and protective cover from the shock absorber rod. To do this, you need to pull them up with a little effort.

All! We disassembled the old front strut of Kalina, now we can start assembling a new one...
