Lada Priora - everything you need to know about increasing ground clearance. Part 1
Lada Priora replaced the obsolete VAZ 2110 family, inheriting the best components and assemblies from these cars. The Priora's ground clearance is excessive for European roads, but on Russian roads it is not sufficient everywhere. Those who bought a Priora and live in large cities with a good economy do not understand why the ground clearance of this car should be increased. However, residents of small towns, as well as those whose relatives live in remote Russian villages and villages, approach this issue differently. After all, the roads in these villages and cities are in very poor condition, and some of them were last repaired in the Soviet Union. In such conditions, 170 millimeters of ground clearance is no longer enough. In this series of articles we will talk about how to increase ground clearance using spacers, what mistakes are made and how the behavior of the car changes as a result of this operation.
How to increase ground clearance
There are several ways to increase the ground clearance of the Priora. The cheapest and worst way is to install interturn spacers. As a result of this increase in ground clearance, the stiffness of the suspension increases, the ground clearance increases and the life of the springs, which break after 50–80 thousand kilometers, decreases. Another extremely dubious method is to install wheels of increased diameter, but the maximum rise in ground clearance will not exceed 1 centimeter, but the load on the suspension and support bearings will sharply increase. The second most popular method is to install various spacers between the rack and the body. The cost and effectiveness of this method depends on the type of spacers and how they are installed correctly. If the spacers are incorrectly selected or installed incorrectly, then along with an increase in ground clearance you will get a sharp decrease in vehicle handling, loss of stability when cornering at high speed and a significant increase in wear of suspension parts.
The third most popular method is to install a package for bad roads. Such packages are produced by AVTOVAZ partner enterprises, so you can choose a package that best suits your wishes. If you couldn’t find a ready-made package, you can assemble it yourself, because it consists of struts and springs of increased length, but less rigidity. If the package is assembled and installed correctly, it increases the ground clearance by 1.5–5.5 centimeters, which allows you to drive even on broken roads. The downside of the package is the high cost and the need to redo the entire suspension, steering and brake control.
Dimensions of the restyled Lada Priora
have not changed significantly.
Although, due to the new front and rear bumpers, the length of the Lada Priora
has changed by several millimeters.
Still restyling Lada Priora sedan
has the longest length, which in the new version is 4,350 mm. The length of the station wagon is 1 centimeter shorter, but the Priora hatchback is even smaller, the length of this version of the body is 4210 mm. The width of the entire family is 1,680 mm and the wheelbase is the same for all 2,492 mm. But everyone’s height is different, the Lada Priora sedan is 1,420 mm, the hatchback is 1,435 mm, but the station wagon is generally 1,508 mm in height. The high height of the Priora station wagon is explained by the presence of roof rails. In a hatchback, the design of the rear part of the body is such that the car turns out to be taller than a sedan.
Regarding the ground clearance or ground clearance of the Lada Priora
, then the manufacturer indicates a figure of 165 mm for the sedan and hatchback, and
for the Lada Priora station wagon the ground clearance is 170 mm
. However, in fact, the ground clearance is greater; just pick up a tape measure and make sure of this. But the manufacturer is not mistaken; he simply indicates the vehicle’s ground clearance when fully loaded. At the same time, manufacturers of foreign cars are cunning and indicate the ground clearance of their cars in an unloaded state. therefore, the real ground clearance of foreign cars and their official data often do not coincide.
Luggage compartment volumes
In the new version of Lada Priora, little has changed in all three bodies. The sedan's trunk volume is 430 liters. The luggage compartment volume of the Priora hatchback is smaller, only 306 liters, but if you fold the rear seats (which cannot be done in a sedan), the volume increases to 705 liters. In the Priora station wagon, the luggage compartment volume is 444 liters, and with the seats folded down it reaches 777 liters. Unfortunately, the rear seats do not fold flat with the floor, and the large wheel arches eat up quite a lot of luggage space.

Regarding the tire size of Lada Priora
, then the manufacturer recommends installing 14-inch wheels. The tire size can be 175/65 R14 or 185/60 R14 or 185/65 R14. The most interesting thing is that today, even on Lada Granta or Kalina in well-packaged trim levels, AvtoVAZ offers 15-inch wheels as standard. Why this is not the case on Priora is not clear, although this does not stop the owners of these cars, who put much larger wheels on their Lada Priora.
We offer an overview of the most practical car from the entire Lada Priora family. This is, of course, the new Lada Priora station wagon (VAZ 2171)
. In our article you will find photos, characteristics, prices and other information about this car.
The first Priors station wagon
appeared on sale back in 2009, two years after the start of sales of sedans. Lada Priora station wagon is the most spacious and roomy car of the entire Priora family. However, the length of the station wagon is 1 centimeter shorter than the sedan, but longer than the hatchback. At the same time, the wheelbase of all three body options is the same.
The luggage compartment volume of the Priora station wagon is 444 liters
, however, if you fold the rear seats, the volume of loading space increases to 777 liters. The most interesting thing is that the seats still do not fold into a perfectly flat floor.
As for the latest restyling, which took place in 2013, the car has remained virtually unchanged in appearance. Apart from the new radiator grille, bumpers, turn signals built into the exterior mirrors and optics with daytime running lights, by the way, the rear lights now have LEDs.
However, the technical part and interior have undergone more serious changes. Thus, a more powerful power unit of 106 hp appeared on the new generation Lada Priora station wagon. This engine is not a new development, but a modernized 98 hp engine. As for the transmission of the front-wheel drive station wagon, Avtovaz designers modified the manual gearbox, and a new cable clutch appeared. There is no automatic transmission option yet, but as the manufacturer promises, Lada Priora with automatic transmission will hit the production line at the end of summer 2014
. In addition, the sound insulation of the Lada Priora station wagon has been slightly improved.
But the first thing that clearly catches your eye on the new Priora is the interior. There are new seats with a fabric that is more practical and pleasant to the touch. By the way, in rich trim levels, the front seats have built-in side airbags and heating with three power levels. The steering wheel is now three-spoke. The center console has a color monitor, which is not only an element of the stereo system, but can also act as a navigator screen.

Technical characteristics of Lada Priora station wagon
Dimensions for Priora station wagon
, after restyling, they changed a little due to new bumpers.
So previously the length of the car was 4,330 mm, now it is 4,340 mm. It is also worth noting that the ground clearance of the Lada Priora station wagon
is 5 mm greater than that of the sedan and hatchback and is equal to
170 mm
.
This difference is explained by the reinforced suspension, since the station wagon is designed not only for transporting passengers, but also for transporting all kinds of cargo. In particular, the car's rear springs have more coils. The height of the car is also greater when compared with its siblings. There is no big secret here, it’s just that all Lada Priora station wagons come standard with roof rails. See the detailed overall dimensions of the Priora station wagon
below.

New Priora, or Priora 2
From this article, you will learn about the main changes and restyling of the Lada Priora car (2014), “Norma+” configuration. Visually, the car has not changed much, that is, those people who are not particularly versed in domestic cars will not notice the difference.
The most pronounced change in the appearance of the Priora is the front and rear bumpers. Their appearance has acquired a sporty character, and looks very good, which the domestic auto industry rarely boasts of.
What can you say about the engine? Here we were not pleased with anything, the same 16-valve engine with a capacity of 98 “horses”, which, in principle, has proven itself well.
But the manufacturer promises that the luxury package will have a new engine, with more power, improved dynamics, variable length of the intake manifold and other features.
Let's pay attention to the interior; we can immediately say that the main changes took place here. The upholstery is made in black tones from the same material, the same can be said about plastic.
This configuration has a touch screen, like on Kalina, we will not pay special attention to it. The instrument panel has also not changed very much: on the left is the tachometer, below it is the temperature sensor indicator, and on the right is the speedometer. Between them is an on-board computer, such as on the 2nd Kalina. Everything is clear, simple and ergonomic.
Also included in the package is air conditioning, electric mirrors (heated), fog lights, and two power windows. The steering wheel has been modified, it looks almost the same as that of the Granta, and the panel has a conveniently located “hands-free” button that works via Bluetooth. One of the significant advantages is the heated windshield - an excellent option for the Russian climate. The gearbox is unchanged. In general, the restyling did not cause negative emotions, although car enthusiasts expected more.

Configurations and price of Lada Priora station wagon
It is worth noting that the price of the most affordable Lada Priora station wagon
in the “norm” configuration today is
384 thousand rubles
, at the same time the most affordable sedan is offered for 364 thousand, and the hatch can be bought for 369,700. In the “luxury” configuration, a station wagon can be bought for 458,300 rubles, a sedan for 449,700 rubles, and the Priora hatchback in the same configuration has a price of 454,500 rubles. That is, the more expensive the equipment, the smaller the difference in price between different body versions.
Today the luxury version of Lada Priora station wagon
has all the necessary options. In terms of safety, the car is equipped with front and side airbags, ABS, exchange rate stability systems, rain and light sensors, advanced seat belts, and special energy-absorbing inserts have appeared in the bumpers. In terms of comfort, Lada Priora station wagon buyers are offered a multimedia system with a large screen in the center console, climate control, and cruise control. Light alloy wheels measuring 14 inches.
But even in the “norm” configuration, the car’s equipment is quite good. So, all cars already have a driver airbag, rear seat head restraints, an ISOFIX child seat mounting system, and an anti-lock brake system with emergency brake assist (ABS and BAS). Instead of the latest electric one, they offer a traditional hydraulic booster, steel wheels, and a full-size spare wheel. Of course there is no multimedia system, but there is audio preparation. As noted above, roof rails on the Lada Priora station wagon
present in all restyled cars.

How to benefit from increased ground clearance?
Of course, neither the doubled nor tripled ground clearance of the Priora can compare with the ground clearance of any SUV. However, we should not forget that, in tandem with the improvement of some other characteristics of the car, the Priora’s ground clearance can give good results. Let's clarify now.
The distance from the ground to the bottom is 165 mm. However, knowledge of this fact alone is not enough to draw any conclusions. The motorist must take into account the following characteristics, such as:
- Full length of the machine.
- Distance from front overhang to rear.
- Wheel base.
- Vehicle track width.
- The presence of any parts protruding from the bottom of the machine.
- The extent to which the ground clearance changes when the vehicle is fully loaded.
Only working to jointly improve all these characteristics can lead to benefit from increasing the Priora's ground clearance.
Parameters of Priora bodies
In any Priora body, the characteristics of its wheels and wheelbases will be the same, and therefore it makes no sense to indicate them separately everywhere. These are the parameters:
These dimensions are valid for all bodies except the coupe. Hatchback parameters:
- The distance from the rear to the front point of the car is 4210 mm.
- The front overhang of the car is 770 mm.
- The rear overhang of the car is 660 mm.
Station wagon and sedan parameters:
- The distance from the rear to the front point of the machine is 4350 mm.
- The front overhang of the car is 740 mm.
- The rear overhang of the car is 830 mm.
Coupe parameters:
- The distance from the rear to the front suspension of the car is 440 mm.
- The wheelbase of the car is 2492 mm.
Overhangs for cars of sportier variants are not specified by the manufacturer. Considering that the Priora's ground clearance is 165 mm, we can choose the best body type that allows us to use ground clearance more successfully than others. Having analyzed all the available characteristics, we will definitely come to the conclusion that the hatchback option is much better than all the others.
Dimensions of Lada Priora
The fairly large wheelbase of the body, despite its small length, allows us to call the car a cross-country vehicle. However, it is necessary to remind Priora owners that, even if you own a hatchback, you need to be very careful when parking next to high curbs. This warning is especially relevant when your machine is fully loaded.
But if the Priora hatchback can, with a stretch, be called the conqueror of forest roads and mountain peaks, then the coupe body cannot receive such a title. Such a car has too long a distance between the front and rear wheels and a very large front overhang. Whatever one may say, it will be difficult to drive along rural country roads. This car design is only good for asphalt surfaces.
However, even they will need to be driven very carefully where there are large potholes and there is a need to overcome artificial unevenness. But since there are no unnecessary or protruding parts from under the transmission on the Priora, you can confidently count on the quality of the available ground clearance.
Despite the absence of parts sticking out from under the bottom of the Priora, you can greatly reduce the ground clearance if you put a lot of people in the car and load the trunk with things. Reducing its length by only 20 mm will be enough for the bottom to touch the surface of the speed bump. It is necessary to force such obstacles with special care in order to eliminate the possibility of breakdowns in time.
Reviews from Lada Priora owners
- Six months ago, out of necessity, I bought myself a Lada Priora. Overall I'm happy with the car. The bottom does not scratch. So far I have only driven to the dacha - the ground clearance is normal.
- I’m ready to tell you – my friend and I have a third Ford and we were racing in a Priora along a country road. So, thanks to the high clearance, holes, potholes and other road irregularities are enough with a bang. And my friend rowed with his belly.
- The height of the gap is not bad; according to St. Petersburg, it perfectly does not touch curbs, and does not touch speed bumps. However, it is worth noting that this is not an SUV for a country road.
- Every weekend I drive carefully on rural roads; the clearance is normal for ugly roads.
- I'm a summer resident, my car is packed to capacity. Solid ground clearance, nothing to say! I’ve never hit a bump with my belly before.
- The road in our village is terrible - ruts, clay, holes, potholes. Generally disgusting. I ride on a Priora and never hit it with the bottom. I'm happy, the ground clearance is not bad for these roads.
- I used to have a foreign car, I drove through the police like it was a skating rink, but the Priora doesn’t have that – the ground clearance is superb! They did it for our roads.
- I drive my car not only around the populated area, but also often go out of town and even drive intercity. The ride height of 17 cm is high especially for such a car.
- Imagine, my friends and I decided to test the car, three friends sat in the back seat and drove off. You won’t believe it, it seemed like the car was on its belly. All the bumps and pits were felt very strongly. The clearance in general is not bad, they hit it a couple of times. But still, driving along a country road at speed will be very risky.
- The infection clings to severe off-road conditions, it rubs your belly on hillocks, but you can park normally near curbs; almost everything passes, except for huge pavement roads. Recumbents go well.
- One day we went to the village along a country road and it seemed that after our trip the road would become smoother; all the bumps were clinging to the bottom.
- Normal clearance. It can be many times worse. I had a European, it was terrible there - like a vacuum cleaner collected all the bumps, it was very low.
- There’s really nothing to say, the clearance is low, up to this point it went everywhere on previous cars, now it’s scary to go anywhere, I have it still new, I’ve only been using it for six months. But, of course, this is not a crossover, and if you don’t bother driving off-road, then the ground clearance is enough for the city.
Ways to increase clearance
It should be noted that people find benefits not only in increasing clearance, but also in reducing it. For example, by reducing ground clearance, motorists achieve a reduction in car roll to the right or left when cornering at high speed. However, if you are not a racer or do not have a passion for driving fast, then the idea of increasing the ground clearance is more suitable for you.
How we will increase the clearance depends on its final length planned by us. At the same time, the ways to influence the ground clearance of the Lada will be different, and some of them will affect the improvement of other characteristics of the car.
Installing spacers on a car
Spacers are parts installed between the car body and its racks. They are attached directly to the support. Since so many motorists resort to increasing ground clearance, some manufacturers include spacers directly with the car struts.
However, if you do not find them while inspecting your existing factory parts, do not despair. Spacers can be found in any automotive market. Just don't expect any incredible miracles from them. The ground clearance will increase by only 12-15 mm. Although this is not enough when crossing deep holes and potholes, it can quite help out during a meeting with a speed bump.
Moreover, tampering with the car using spacers is considered completely safe, and therefore you don’t have to worry about the fact that it will negatively affect the car’s behavior. Developing the topic of safety, we should remember the advisability of purchasing plastic spacers as they are more reliable.
When purchasing a car, the future owner evaluates a number of indicators that must primarily meet the characteristics of the upcoming operation or the conditions of the region in which the car will be used. Considering the poor quality of roads in certain parts of Russia, such a parameter as vehicle clearance plays a fairly important role.
General characteristics of the car
Standard wheel clearance
Few passenger cars can match SUVs in terms of ground clearance, but high ground clearance is only important in combination with other vehicle characteristics. If we consider the Priora’s ground clearance, then, on the one hand, everything is very clear here: this figure for this model is 165 mm. But in order to assess its sufficiency, it is necessary to additionally consider the following characteristics:
- total length of the vehicle;
- front and rear overhang length;
- wheelbase;
- vehicle track width;
- the presence of protruding elements under the bottom of the car;
- change in ground clearance for a fully loaded car.
Design parameters Priorities affecting ground clearance
When analyzing geometric parameters, it should be understood that some of them, such as the wheelbase, remain unchanged, while others will depend on the type of body.
The general characteristics of the car are as follows (with the exception of the coupe body):
- wheelbase - 2475 mm (for sedan cars - minus 5 mm);
- front wheel track - 1440 mm;
- rear wheel track - 1410 mm.
Car dimensions
A car with a hatchback body has the following individual characteristics:
- total length of the car - 3905 mm;
- front overhang - 770 mm;
- rear overhang - 660 mm.
The Priora variant with station wagon and sedan bodies has the following characteristics:
- total length of the car - 4040 mm;
- front overhang - 740 mm;
- rear overhang - 830 mm.
A car with a coupe body has the following indicators:
- the total length of the car is 4210 mm in the basic version or 4243 mm in the more expensive version;
- wheelbase - 2492 mm.
But the manufacturer does not indicate the car’s overhangs as a sportier option.
Analyzing the presented indicators, the Lada Priora with a hatchback body is better than other options that allow the use of a ground clearance of 165 mm. With a short body, a large wheelbase allows for good cross-country ability. The only warning for the driver is the need to carefully park near high curbs, especially if the car is fully loaded.
Difficult to drive off-road
A car with a coupe body, due to its long wheelbase and large front overhang, cannot be used as a conqueror of forest roads and country lanes. This is still a purely asphalt car. At the same time, you need to be careful about both large potholes and overcoming artificial bumps. Priora has no protruding elements or inconveniently placed components that could negatively affect the maintenance of ground clearance.
But with standard suspension elements, you can reduce the ground clearance by 20 mm when the car is fully loaded. A fully loaded Priora can easily hit an element protruding above the road, such as a speed bump, so you need to force the obstacle with extreme caution.
Installation of springs of different lengths and stiffness
The amount of ground clearance of a car directly depends on the installed spring. The body rests on it, and not only how much the car will rise above the road, but also the operation of the entire suspension depends on its rigidity and length. There are several options for springs on the Lada Priora. These are classes “A” and “B”, the first one is considered the more severe. In addition, there are several types of springs that were installed directly at the factory at different times.
When choosing springs, you should always look for a reasonable compromise, since installing an overly stiff part and using it on an unloaded car will not allow the suspension to work smoothly, and the car will bounce on every bump.
One of the options for increasing ground clearance is to install intercoil spacers on the spring. These elements do not allow the spring to compress completely, and the stiffness of the suspension increases. However, at the same time, the compression of the shock absorber is limited, which reduces the smoothness and comfort of the vehicle's suspension. This method is justified when using the car on bad roads, since it additionally helps prevent breakdown of the suspension and protect the shock absorber and spring from destruction.
Another simple way to increase ground clearance is to install a spacer under the spring between the body and the spring. This part, made of high-strength rubber, easily copes with the pressure of the vehicle's weight on it, while the suspension settings practically do not change. You need to understand that if the spring sag, installing such a spacer will not be able to increase the rigidity of the part. Therefore, the spring must be changed.
Another way to increase the ground clearance of the Priora is to install larger tires. Of course, you cannot simply change the wheel size from R 13 (14) to R 15, but installing a tire with a higher profile is quite acceptable. Instead of 175/55 R 14, you can use 175/70 R 14. But the driver should not forget that a higher wheel profile behaves slightly worse when cornering, and take this fact into account when choosing a speed.
Dimensions of Lada Priora

, then the manufacturer recommends installing 14-inch wheels.
Increasing the ground clearance of the Lada Priora
In practice, increasing or decreasing ground clearance is usually carried out under specific operating conditions. The decrease may be due to an active driving style. In this way they try to reduce the roll of the car when cornering. But more often the ground clearance of the car is increased.
Increasing ground clearance can be achieved in various ways, both individually and in a set of measures, and depends on what kind of ground clearance the owner ultimately wants to achieve. The main ways to increase ground clearance are given below.
Clearance increased to 175 mm
- Using special spacers is one of the most common methods. The parts are installed between the car body and the strut support. Some manufacturers supply such spacers complete with racks, but they can also be purchased separately. As a rule, the increase in ground clearance is achieved small, in the range of 12-15 mm. But the intervention in the car’s design is minimal and does not negatively affect the car’s behavior. In order to eliminate unpleasant effects on the car body, it is advisable to install plastic spacers.
- Use of modified shock absorbers. Initially, the shock absorber does not affect the ground clearance. However, if a worn unit is in motion, it may be subject to vibration in the longitudinal direction, which increases the likelihood of damage not only to bumpers, but also to vehicle components close to the road surface. To increase ground clearance on the Priora, like on any other car, you can install original shock absorbers, which may differ in a number of parameters:
- rod length;
- increased spring length;
- increased rigidity (due to shock absorber settings and increasing the thickness of the spring coil).
The latter method can be quite expensive and is used less frequently. There are quite a lot of options for purchasing replacement shock absorbers, since you can select such a unit from another model or take advantage of a special offer from various manufacturers.
