How to distinguish a processor radio from a simple one

Processor radios: what is the difference from conventional ones

Almost every motorist who is interested in car audio has heard what a processor radio is, and of course, would like to purchase such a device for his car interior. However, a higher price is considered a feature; among radios, these versions are considered the highest class. The concept implies the presence of a sound processor, with its help audio channels are automatically adjusted, making very fine adjustment of audio sound possible. The devices are available in 1 and 2 din.

Car radio

Note that a 2 din processor radio will still have a regular processor; the Cortex platform is usually installed. However, we are talking about completely different functions that are in no way related to car radios with professional sound.

You can determine what type of radio you have installed by the technical characteristics or by the described functions. If there is a sound processor, the device will have:

  • digital time correction for 6 channels;
  • digital transcoder, etc.

Why is digital time correction needed? To correct the emitted sound taking into account the shape of the cabin, which distorts the audio waves. Using this function, the sound parameters are equalized, as a result the driver hears the same melody as the passenger and vice versa. This is implemented using a delay lag of milliseconds.

Adjustment of delays should be carried out by an experienced technician, who takes into account many parameters of the interior, and also correctly positions the speakers relative to the constructed audio system circuit.

Features of the processor radio

So, if everything written above has not killed your desire to improve the sound in the car, in the form of purchasing a processor-based radio, then we continue. In addition to problems with sound absorption, there is also the problem of creating the correct sound stage at the listening point. If in a room we can sit in the middle without any problems and not bother with it, then in a car it is simply impossible to sit in the middle. The listener will always be shifted closer to one of the speakers and correspondingly further away from the other.

And despite the fact that sound travels very quickly, there will be a change not only in the signal level, but also in the delay when listening to it from a more distant source. And here a simple balance adjustment, as happens on all radios, like lowering the volume a little here and adding another speaker, will not help. It will be quieter or louder, but the time delay will remain the same. And the only way out is to change the timing for the sound sources, that is, one starts playing a little earlier, the other a little later. If we are to be absolutely meticulous, then such timing must be set either physically for each audio frequency, by separating the HF, midrange and woofers at different distances, or again by ensuring a difference in time between the output signals of each of these sources. A striking example of acoustics Technics, when the overall “correct picture” at the listening location is based on the speed of sound propagation depending on the frequency.

(LF waves are the slowest, so the speaker is as close as possible to the listener, and HF is the most distant according to the same principle)

In general, all that remains is to summarize and draw a conclusion about what the processor radio should do and how. If you analyze everything I said, then you can now answer the question for yourself about why a processor radio is needed and how it should work in its nominal mode. That is, the processor radio must provide correct, clear, synchronous mixing of all frequencies and sounds from sources at some selected point, be it the driver’s seat or the passenger’s seat. Again, based on all of the above, it turns out that it will not be possible to achieve such a correct picture for everyone in the car at the same time. You'll have to switch between preliminary settings, like listen for now, and then bam and turn it on again.

Well, of course, setting up a radio will require not only the ability to tune, but also hearing in order to hear that now and here everything has come together into one single whole. The system turns out to be very complex and not always justified, especially if we take into account the fact that many would simply have difficulty appreciating a high-quality amplifier. Therefore, the number of processor radios that we have today does not at all correspond to the number of people who could hear something other than high-quality amplification, that is, take advantage of these very timings in the setup.

And in the end, my personal opinion is that for a car enthusiast on the street, it’s worth paying attention to a high-quality amplifier first of all, and only then, if you have some money left, you can spend money on microprocessor units, which can also be remote ones. And for many, this will remain nothing more than an inflated balloon, when on the outside there is the inscription Digital Signal Processor (DSP), but in fact no settings have been made or they were made out of nowhere!

Everything on this topic of a processor radio can be considered mostly covered, and we will add something to each one. Share opinions and experiences! Thanks to all.

Minuses

Flaws:

  • high price;
  • difficult setup for new users;
  • the complexity of installing acoustics, it is installed depending on the sound parameter, which implies certain problems with installing holes in the casing and with the availability of power supply;
  • The difference between a tuned sound stage and an untuned one will not be visible in all styles of music. It manifests itself especially well when playing classical compositions;
  • the need for external amplifiers.

In general, the device is suitable for those car owners who know what good sound is and how it differs from ordinary sound. This will also help determine preferences in choosing the direction of music and radio.

Radio JVC RD-EZ16 reviews

Yurist ★★★★★ Advantages:

Here are a dozen advantages that I discovered: 1) USB (the 2nd function - the charger - turned out to be very useful in nature), 2) Linear input (we connect any MP3 player, and the radio turns into... long-playing speakers), 3) Display backlight (for night gatherings in nature),4)Remote control (albeit without volume control, but not worth considering as a disadvantage),5)Long battery life when using USB and line input,6)Sound power 3 W (which is a buzz for such size), as a result of which he is quite tall, 7) Oddly enough, an analog radio, which works great outside the city, 8) Quite compact and lightweight (even with batteries), 9) Nice design with a streamlined shape (and also the feeling that he is smiling :),10)The compartment with USB and linear input slams shut like a bread box!:)11)Endurance (more on this in the comments),12)Price.
Disadvantages:
It is the only one, but it is worthy of attention: Problems arose when operating devices via USB at a time when the device itself was running on batteries, namely: it destroyed all the information from the flash drive a couple of times and gave my old Philips player (recently purchased Samsung) a heart attack turned out to be more persistent and worked properly, apparently his nerves were stronger).
I’ll just say that the Philips had to be revived with the help of special software. I note that no such glitches were noticed when working from the network. I don’t consider such little things as the lack of tags, digital radio and strong bass to be disadvantages for a radio for this price. Comment:
How to test the endurance of a radio? — That’s right, take her on a hike! My GVC was exposed to the following external factors, which never broke his fighting spirit: 1) Invasion of ants (apparently mistaking him for an elite anthill), 2) Fallen dew, 3) Direct sunlight. Now it sits in the kitchen, decorates the interior and pleases with its proper functioning. To summarize, I will say that with a ratio of advantages and disadvantages of 12:1, this device showed its best side. The choice is yours.

Sound
Disadvantages:

Bought in 2001.
It still looks like new, and the sound is better than many music centers. Constantly used for discos on trips to the cottage. At maximum volume it does not choke. It's a pity that they are no longer produced, and modern analogues are too large and terribly expensive. For those who need a CD-recorder without MP-3, or maybe listen to old cassettes or radio, it’s worth looking for this device. It won't let you down! Vadim R. ★★★★★ Advantages:

Alexander Y. ★★★★★ Advantages:

excellent appearance excellent sound quality good radio recording radio on cassette
Disadvantages:
does not support mp3 does not support DVD discs in the big spring supports RDS resetting the clock and radio settings when the power cable is unplugged
Comment:
Deep clean bass due to a two-way audio system. Two speakers for bass and two for mids and highs. The build quality is excellent. An excellent replacement for a mini home audio system. With ten D-size batteries, you can take it outdoors. Battery life, however, varies depending on what you are going to listen to on it. If you forgive such little things typical of a technically outdated device, such as the lack of support for mp3, RDS and DVD, then overall this is a good portable radio with excellent sound.

Alexander S. ★★★★★ Advantages:

Portable.
Two Subwoofers. There is a CD player and a compact cassette play recorder. Radio receiver. Separate adjustable input for a microphone or electric guitar. It can work from a 220V network and from 12 large batteries. There is a shoulder strap. Durable housing. Useful on/off timer function. Disadvantages:
1. A little heavy (but there are two handles)2.
No more comments. Comment:
Classic “Boom Box”. It reproduces sounds very loudly and “meaty” not only indoors but also outdoors. The bottoms are the deepest. Two subs are no joke. :)) Will decorate any outdoor party. It won’t let your neighbors sleep with whom you have quarreled. It’s also suitable for street idiots, connect a guitar and a microphone, put a hat next to it for change :)) In general, “a black man’s dream.”

Radio JVC RV-NB10 reviews

Stanislav Sh. ★★★★ Advantages:

Made in Indonesia, supports types I and II cassettes, displays mp3 tags in English, very competent equalizer presets, 6-step subwoofer level adjustment, sensitive FM receiver, sound, sound and once again - sound!
Disadvantages:
- does not remember where it was when playing a CD after switching to another source (well, almost all portable radios have the same problem) - high noise level of the final amplifiers (although this is not particularly disturbing) - a clear lack of high frequencies - a very capricious laser in the disk drive (the slightest scratch on the disk causes it to stutter) - thin internal walls separating the subwoofer boxes from the central compartment, which sometimes leads to rattling and choking during deep bass - delayed response of the volume control (if you turn it sharply, the volume level only changes after a second)
Comment:
I thought for a long time whether to write this review or not... after all, there is no special meaning in it anymore, since the radio tape recorder has long gone out of sale. However, time shows that the model is worthy! It’s already autumn 2014, and still nothing better has been invented! Therefore, I finally decided to write! I’ll start from afar... Back in 2006, I once went into a household appliances store and saw this model. As I remember now, she stood at the entrance and played. What a cool sound that was!! It hooked me so much that I made a promise to myself to buy a similar tape recorder someday)) And in the summer of 2014, I made up my mind! But to my great surprise, I discovered that such models are practically not produced! I found the only similar one - Sharp GX-M10H and bought it. I was very pleased with the sound from the USB and disk... however, when I connected the sound source to the line input, I was deeply disappointed! For some reason, the signal coming from the linear input in this model is completely devoid of bass! All upset, I returned the Sharp to the store and decided to look for that same JVC RV-NB10 through the advertisements. I found it in the Moscow region, came to pick it up, listened to it and immediately bought it! The sound is truly amazing - juicy mids, bass that shakes the floor under your feet. There is a lack of high frequencies, but I fixed it by installing tweeters. It was not at all difficult and the price of the issue was only 200 rubles. Also, I ordered a module for receiving USB and Bluetooth on ebay and built it into the radio (the procedure is also not at all complicated, the cost of the module is 350 rubles, including delivery). Also, I slightly strengthened the walls separating the subwoofer boxes from the central compartment. As a result, I have an almost perfect radio! For trips to the country or picnics in nature, it couldn’t be better! In the fresh air it pumps up “what it needs”))) Radio far from the tower - excellent reception! I tested it at 25 kilometers - it catches even with the antenna folded. I don’t regret buying this radio one bit! If you manage to find one in the advertisements and in good condition, take it!

Processor car radios: pros and cons

Depending on the design features, car radios can be divided into four classes. The price of the equipment depends on the class of equipment, and this is natural. The cheapest are primitive radios with mechanical switches. Next are devices with digital tuning, which are at the entry level. Then there are four-channel devices with electronic adjustments, which can be classified as average. The highest class includes car radios with a processor. This device will be discussed in our article.

What is a sound processor for?

The interior of a car cannot be called the most comfortable place to listen to music. Noises interfere: both those arising during the movement and those coming from the street. So:

  • The quality of sound perception is also affected by the asymmetrical arrangement of the speakers in relation to the people sitting in the car. An imbalance arises between the distant and closer sound sources. And the more speakers there are (see How to choose speakers for a car radio on your own), the greater the imbalance.
  • It is quite easy to solve this problem by using a sound processor for the car radio. This device independently distributes sound and allows you to quickly set up a sound system. But before the advent of processors, setup took much longer than it took to install it: from several days to several weeks.

External sound processor for car

  • The sound processor can be a stand-alone device, as in the photo above, or be integrated into a car radio. There are even amplifiers with a built-in processor. An external sound processor is a fairly powerful device that has a separate crossover for each channel for filtering sound.
  • Processors also have wide equalizers that can separate sound into bands. This equipment has other functions aimed at achieving a high-quality sound signal. You can connect an external processor to any car radio, even to a model that does not have amplifier outputs.
  • To do this, you do not need to change linear and speaker cables, pull the power cable, modify the standard device or replace it with new equipment. The processor can be installed, for example, under the seat, using just one wire connected to the standard connector on the radio.

By the way, some modifications of processors make it possible to connect via a subwoofer's linear output. True, in this case, you will have to lay the power wire from the battery.

Properties of processor radios

Naturally, a car radio with a processor built into its body has many of the qualities of an external processor. And some modifications of such radios are almost in no way inferior to them in sound quality. Although, in appearance they are no different from ordinary car radios:

  • When choosing a processor radio for your car in a store, keep in mind that many of them do not have a full-fledged processor, but only some of its functions. To understand which device is in front of you, before purchasing you should carefully study the instructions with its technical characteristics.
  • As a rule, processor-based car radios have the highest power - up to 50W. You can determine whether the radio has a processor (DSP) by such characteristics as: switchable, three-way digital crossover; graphic equalizer; six-channel time correction.
  • It is these functions that allow you to shift the sound field in one direction or another, or concentrate the sound of all speakers at one point. In this case, the listener does not feel the louder sound of the near speaker or the prominent power of the subwoofer (see How to connect a subwoofer to a car radio: lessons for amateurs).
  • Moreover, there are many options for adjusting the sound stage. These properties are used by car audio specialists when setting up systems. These features are undeniable advantages for radios equipped with processors.
  • The negative characteristics of such equipment include its relatively high cost. The downside is the complexity of the setup, which is almost impossible to do with your own hands without special skills. For beginners in this matter, even a video is unlikely to help.
  • In the case of a processor radio, it is very important to correctly position the acoustic equipment. In this case, certain difficulties may arise, since sometimes a column needs to be placed where it is not technically possible to do so - you have to come up with a way to attach it.

Typically, setting up and testing speaker systems is done while listening to classical music. It is this that makes it possible to fully appreciate the sound quality of the car radio installed in the car.

Which radios are more popular - Pioneer or Kenwood?

In November 2020, on PartReview, Pioneer radios were generally more popular than Kenwood.

In terms of vote ratio, Pioneer radios surpassed Kenwood:

  • Pioneer had a ratio of positive votes (254) to negative votes (57) of 197 votes.
  • For Kenwood, the ratio of positive votes (115) to negative (4) was 111 votes.

In terms of the number of reviews, Pioneer radios surpassed Kenwood:

  • There are 98 reviews written on Pioneer radios: 74 positive, 16 neutral, 8 negative.
  • There are 39 reviews written on Kenwood radios: 37 positive, 2 neutral, 0 negative.

What does it mean

The processor-based radio distributes sound throughout the car interior in a high-quality manner and allows you to quickly make the necessary settings to eliminate audible defects. It takes much less time to install than trying to correct sound inconsistencies on your own.

A sound processor is a powerful device. Has a separate crossover for each channel to filter the sound. In addition, the sound processors have a wide equalizer.

Such equipment also has other options that are aimed at achieving the highest possible signal quality.

You can connect such a processor to any car radio, including models that do not have an amplifier connector. This means that there is no need to change and stretch wires, make modifications to the standard device, or install another one. For example, you can place it under a chair, selecting only 1 cord, which is connected to the standard output of the device.

How to setup

Setting up a processor radio is a difficult task. It is recommended to use the services of a specialist, although you can do it yourself. It is required to rationally set the delays and correctly position the speakers.

To configure the processor radio, you must complete the following steps:

  1. Set delays (superficially). You just need to use a tape measure to measure the distance from the speakers to the selected location (for example, near the steering wheel).
  2. Check acoustic phases. It is necessary at this time to listen to melodies and record data. You need to turn off the mid frequencies and listen first only to the upper ones, and then to the lower ones. On the far speaker, it is recommended to refine the phase and listen to everything again.
  3. Adjust the level for each speaker. First you need the upper, then the lower frequencies. Then turn on all channels and set the levels. Afterwards, listen only to the left side, and then to the right.
  4. Select crossover frequency. During playback, you need to listen to the signal level, record the difference, and then adjust. By default, low bass is lowered, and high bass is raised higher.
  5. Adjust delays (more precisely). You need to turn off the mid frequencies and listen to the highs. Make adjustments. Do the same for low frequencies. Then turn on all channels. Set the stage height.
  6. Adjust everything using the equalizer. You need to sit down on the left first and adjust everything, then turn on the second side.

When choosing the best radio for a car, in addition to aesthetic preferences, it is important to look at other characteristics. Below you will find out which ones specifically.

It is important to take a closer look at the following technical characteristics:

  • Noise level. This indicator reflects the ratio of the output signals to noise. The value should be on average at least 90 decibels. The higher this indicator, the cleaner the sound will be.
  • Dimensions of the car radio housing. Most devices are conventionally divided into several standard sizes. The most common are 1 Din (classic) and 2 Din (enlarged). The second type has a much larger screen. In addition, the functionality of 2 Din is richer. Due to their size, it is possible to install a rear view camera, navigator, etc. in such cases.
  • Tuner sensitivity. 1 μV - this is exactly what this parameter should be. A smaller value will be completely useless. This indicator is often needed outside the city, when radio signals are weak.
  • Number of channels. In modern radio tape recorders there are from two to four of them. Accordingly, a similar number of speakers is installed. When you have a five-channel system, it is recommended to install a subwoofer.
  • Availability of equalizer. With its help, the timbre is adjusted and the level balance of the rear and front sound is adjusted. The more equalizer bands the car radio supports, the more convenient it is to adjust the sound.
  • Supports communication with a smartphone. For modern systems this is an important parameter. Thanks to him, you will not be distracted from the road while having a conversation. The sounds will be heard from the car speakers.
  • Backlight color. This parameter is also given importance. It is important to choose a shade that will harmoniously combine with the backlight color of the main console. Otherwise, color disharmony will occur. From a purely external perspective it is not attractive.
  • Availability of radio. Modern car radios are equipped with a radio receiver. The best reception occurs only in two bands - VHF and FM. In addition, the radio must support RDS. In this case, you will be able to read the names of songs, weather information, etc. on the screen.

Many car radio manufacturers use the same components. Under different names, which are produced in different countries, but with fairly similar characteristics. For this reason, all radios without additional amplifiers will sound the same. And the price factor will not be decisive here. Also because of this, they have absolutely identical power of 40-50 watts.

This high power output is a simple marketing ploy and an enticing message on an attractive box. In real life, most car radios produce the classic 20 watts. Manufacturers prescribe the peak power that the device produces for a couple of minutes.

The power of the car radio must be less than the power of the speakers. For example, you have speakers in your car. In this case, their power must be taken into account.

Now let's talk about sound. Most devices produce simple sound. This is enough for ordinary car enthusiasts. But there is a category of those who only need high-quality, good sound.

When a person buys a budget version of a standard or double-din radio for 10,000 rubles with dozens of options, then it makes no sense to talk about excellent sound quality. These multimedia devices focus specifically on quantity rather than quality.

How is it different from the usual

The processor differs from conventional car radios in the following characteristics:

  1. Price. Processor models are more expensive and belong to premium devices.
  2. Ability to fine-tune sound quality. The devices are equipped with a sound processor used to automatically select the signal channel. In this way you can adjust any settings of the multimedia system. The devices are available in 2 formats - 1 din or 2 din.
  3. Specifications. If the radio is processor-based, the instructions indicate the possibility of digital adjustment of 6 channels and the presence of a digital transcoder. Temporary adjustment prevents distortion of sound waves inside the car. This difference allows you to align all parameters.
  4. Improved sound quality. The driver and all passengers will hear the musical composition equally. This becomes possible due to the short delay duration (a few milliseconds).
  5. Set of functions. When purchasing a processor device, you need to remember that some models are not full-fledged radio tape recorders. They may differ in the presence of only part of the options.

How to find out if the radio is processor-based or not

Studying the technical characteristics of the product will help you find out whether the radio is processor-based or not. Such models have the highest power - up to 55 W. Other characteristics specific to processor devices include:

  • 6-channel time adjustment;
  • presence of a graphic equalizer;
  • customizable three-way crossover.

These functions provide a shift in the sound field, evenly distributing the speaker signals. The audibility of the front speaker will not stand out against the background of the sound of the others located further from the head unit. The DSP inscription on the case helps you understand that the model is a processor model.

How to setup

To be able to set the settings of the installed system, you need to understand what a processor radio is and how it functions. After installing the device, perform the following steps:

  1. Determine the duration of the delay. To properly configure the radio, you need to measure the distance from the speakers to the selected location.
  2. Adjust the acoustic phases. At this time, the musical composition is played back, while simultaneously recording data. After turning off the mid frequencies, listen to low and high frequencies alternately. They reduce the phase of the distant speaker and continue playing music.
  3. Adjust the level for each speaker. First of all, tune the high frequencies. After this they move on to the lower ones. Activate all channels and set the required levels. Listen first to the left side, then to the right.
  4. Select the crossover frequency. During playback, the signal levels are determined and the difference is recorded. After this, the necessary adjustments are made. It is better to underestimate low bass, and overestimate high bass.
  5. Precisely adjust delays. Turn off the mid frequencies while listening to the highs. Some changes are being made. The same actions are performed for low frequencies. After turning on all channels, the sound quality is assessed.

The final steps are choosing stage height and adjusting the equalizer. Work begins on the left side. After making changes, switch to the right.
