Why Chevrolet Niva?
Previously, I had a foreign car - a 2002 Mitsubishi Galant. It was bought with 50 thousand kilometers already, and was driven on it for more than 10 years. Everything was great and I was satisfied with everything. But nothing lasts forever. Alas. And each time I put more and more into it than I received in the end. And after the last breakdown, for which the service station charged me an enormous amount of money to fix, I decided to replace it and buy a new, fresher car. I knew right away what to get as a replacement - I had long liked the old Chevrolet Niva. And I’ve seen a lot of reviews about the 2018 modification on the Internet, and mostly all of them are positive. The same cannot be said about other AvtoVAZ products, and even about the Niva of previous years. Here the manufacturer did his best.
For the price, Chevy suited me completely. It was enough to buy a car without getting into loans and debts (although it still didn’t work out completely without debt). I wanted to take it from a car dealership at least once. I took it to Bashavto (Ufa). By the way, I also left a review of the purchase on this site, look for Sergei Usmanov’s review here. On their website I looked at all the configurations, their photos and videos, prices. Signed up for a test drive. Since I had enough money, I immediately took the maximum one with Conder and other fillings. I decided that I would pay right away rather than install it later. Experience shows that additional installation ends up being more expensive and not always better. The decision to purchase was residual, so the test drive was purely symbolic, just to get a feel for the car.
And in general, I live outside the city, but I work in the city, I go to work 5 days a week, so the car was needed for constant use. And not only for driving on smooth roads, but also off-road. We have one section at the entrance to the city - it’s just crap, sometimes in winter it falls asleep so much that you can’t get through it at all without all-wheel drive. The Mitsubishi had the front one, so I suffered a lot, but the Niva has never let me down in this matter.

NIVA Laura is an armored car with hinged doors, based on hidden armor technology.
The car was intended mainly for collectors, but could also be used for other purposes. Full-length curved glass provided the crew with a high degree of visibility, and hinged doors made it possible to quickly load or unload crew and valuables. Domestic armored car
Laura was released in episodes 1958, 19321-03 and 1958-1. The first of them has four driving wheels, a VAZ 2123 engine, consumes fuel with an octane rating of at least 95. The length of the car is 4.048 m, width - 1.786 m, height - 1.652 m, wheelbase - 2.450 m (from Niva Chevrolet). The car can accommodate 3-5 people, including the driver, and the load capacity is 400 kg.
The interior is quite comfortable, the car has high visibility for the crew, and it is possible to load through an armored hatch with a remote-controlled lock. For protection, modern materials are used, which provide minimal load on the suspension (it is believed that the car has an additional weight of 200-300 kg).
The technical characteristics of the car are such that it fits the second or third class of protection according to GOST R 50963-96. This means that before installing armor on the vehicle, the metal sheets were tested through fire from certain types of weapons, the fuel tanks are resistant to fires and explosions from small arms bullets and high-explosive or fragmentation grenades.
What do you like?
Design. The Chevrolet body has become more formidable in appearance and looks like an expensive foreign car. Everything inside is cool too - the front panel is comfortable, the leather-wrapped steering wheel looks chic, the upholstery and seats are of high quality. I especially like the driver’s seat, which is equipped with special lateral support, due to which, even during a long trip, my back does not become stiff and does not hurt like an old man’s (my maximum distance without getting up was 480 km one way and I felt invigorated).
Capacity. There is more space in the cabin; the driver’s seat is spacious and comfortable for me, although I am not the smallest size (195 cm tall). Plus, when fully loaded with 3 people in the back seat, there is enough space for all passengers, no one is disadvantaged. Many owners wrote in their reviews that the New Chevrolet Niva has a small trunk (some even posted photos and videos to confirm that they couldn’t fit anything), but it seems to me that this is a subjective assessment. As for me, the trunk is quite normal in size, at least enough for us. Yes, you can’t fit an elephant in there, but everything you need, including a box with a new washing machine and a bunch of other things, fits in at a run.
Under the hood. I'm not particularly a fan of driving fast, so the 136 horsepower engine is enough for me. I don’t drive more than 120 anyway - you can’t accelerate much in the city because of traffic jams and traffic lights, and I still have nowhere to rush on the highway, so I don’t drive. I am immensely pleased with the fuel consumption - only 8-12 liters per 100 km (highway-city), for a car of this size this is very, very good. I’ve seen a couple of times in reviews that this model has a tight gearbox, but for me everything is ok, the PDA is smooth, no questions at all. The brakes are playful and hold well even when pressed hard.
Equipment. The car holds the road well, even on ice. Excellent powerful optics, both regular and fog. The interior has excellent sound insulation, and the car itself has good visibility.

The model is produced with reinforced sills and side members, which provides high structural rigidity. - capacity - 3-5 people;
- load capacity - 0.55 tons;
- protection class - 2 or 3 according to GOST No. 50963-96;

Niva Laura series 1958-01 has a wheelbase increased by 51 cm, a voluminous cargo compartment, an increased roof height, as well as special shock absorbers and springs, reinforced side members and sills. It is all-wheel drive, has a plastic casing with good isothermal properties, and runs on A95 gasoline and higher.
Such a car is the dream of many, because, for example, it is impossible to break the glass with stones, but many owners need to unarmor the Laura car for a number of reasons. Firstly, the car is quite heavy (one windshield weighs about 25 kg), which leads to additional gas consumption and reduces the likelihood of getting out of a rut or quagmire.
Secondly, armored glass has a special refraction of rays, which causes a strain on vision that is more acceptable for working conditions than for leisure. Thirdly, armored vehicles are not registered for individuals, so even if you plan to buy a used car (they are often sold by credit institutions), you will need to take a number of actions to unarmor it. Moreover, the unbooking must be carried out by the legal entity-seller.
What's wrong?
I can’t say that I really don’t like anything about Niva. In my opinion, the car is worth the money and fully pays for itself.
The only thing is that my maximum configuration can boast of a rear view camera, although for me it’s a useless thing, at least I don’t use it, but look in the mirror the old fashioned way. So I don’t even know where to put this useful device.
I can only name some minor disadvantages:
- uncomfortable gas pedal (it took me a long time to get used to it, I still couldn’t get the hang of it, but now everything is fine);
- lack of power windows on the rear passenger windows;
- the air conditioner is not very powerful (it’s enough for me while driving, but those sitting in the back complain that it’s not enough).
Let's sum it up
Today, I am very pleased that I bought a Chevrolet Niva, and reviews from the owners confirm that the 2018 model looks fresher in appearance, and technically it is much better quality even compared to recent years. And no matter what they say about foreign cars, this car showed itself well. Today I have already covered 17 thousand km and everything is fine. Everything works like clockwork. No unnecessary sounds appeared anywhere. Nothing fell off. So far, my only requests to the service station have been tire inflation and oil changes. All.

What kind of Shniva is this with a 136 hp engine, there are no such things right now!?! We also have a 2020 Shniva GL, and it hasn’t let us down yet, but compared to the 2008 Shniva, the build quality is much worse. Especially knocking noises in the transmission, which GM-AvtoVAZ calls technical features, but in reality it’s just poor quality adjustment of the differentials in the transfer case, axles, and maybe something else...
