The secret to quality ignition: stay informed!
If the spark plug is unstable, the engine will not work to its full potential: it will be difficult to start the car when cold, and the power and stability of the engine will also decrease. A faulty spark plug is a headache for any driver: do not neglect the procedure for replacing components, otherwise problems with the operation of the car will occur.
The only factor affecting the quality of spark plug ignition is the gap between the electrodes of the device. By changing the gap size, the ignition speed is adjusted: a larger distance increases the ignition zone and time, a smaller distance increases the speed. The best option is to set the gap between the electrodes according to the car’s technical book, however, this rule applies only at the beginning or middle of the engine’s operational life, when approaching a major overhaul - the ignition will have to be set literally blindly, taking into account the characteristics of the engine.

Choosing spark plugs for Lancer 9 correctly: what do you need to know?
It is recommended to change stock spark plugs every 30,000 km, and devices with platinum or iridium tips - every 60,000 km, which will increase engine service life. Using a car with worn spark plugs worsens the ignition quality of the air-fuel liquid, which leads to the formation of soot and soot on the surface of the cylinder-piston group and negatively affects the integrity of the sealing gaskets.
It is advisable to select spark plugs for the Mitsubishi Lancer 9 solely by the vehicle’s VIN code or by checking the compatibility of component part numbers, which will ensure optimal ignition quality. It is important to know that on cars of different engine sizes and gearbox types, spark plugs are not interchangeable and may differ not only in power, but also in design features.
How to choose spark plugs for Mitsubishi Lancer 9
The issue of selecting spark-forming elements is of interest not only to beginners. Experienced motorists also do not ignore the spark plugs on the Mitsubishi Lancer 9. If previously one could be content with installing conventional nickel spark plugs, which were sintered after the first unsuccessful refueling, today it is recommended to pay attention to modern options with a longer service life.
Which candles are better?
The “life” of nickel or conventional spark-forming elements in domestic conditions is shortened for reasons beyond our control. It is enough to refuel with low-grade gasoline once, and replacing the spark plugs on the Mitsubishi Lancer 9 is guaranteed. Question: are more expensive iridium varieties, which are even recommended by the manufacturer (although for some reason only for 2-liter modifications of the Lancer 9), capable of withstanding low-quality fuel? After all, their declared resource is twice as large.
Often, one additive is added to Russian fuel, which kills any spark plugs. It increases the octane number. It contains a substance that leaves a harmful residue on the electrodes and causes a short circuit. Brick-colored deposits are visible to the naked eye.
So what should we do? If the additive kills all spark plugs, what's the point of buying expensive iridium ones? For this reason, many people use conventional products at a low price. If problems arise with sparking, they replace them with new ones. Drivers of another category (there are fewer of them) buy expensive spark plugs, hoping for their high quality. In most cases, they do not fail; they wear out only after a decent mileage. It turns out that both options have their pros and cons.
Diagnostics of the engine condition by the appearance of the spark plugs

ignition system wires. High-voltage wires must not have insulation damage, and their tips must not be oxidized. If there is damage to the wires, replace the faulty wire.
HELPFUL ADVICE
The simplest and at the same time effective way to check high-voltage wires is to check in the dark. Place the car in a dark place, start the engine and open the hood. Inspect the high voltage wires. If the insulation of the wires is broken, you will see a characteristic blue-violet sparkle (“northern lights”). In this case, high-voltage wires require mandatory replacement.
3. Remove the spark plugs (see “Replacing and servicing spark plugs,” page 72).
WARNING
When removing high-voltage wire lugs, never pull on the wire itself. Place your hand directly on the tip and twist it from side to side and then pull before removing it.
4. Carefully inspect the candles and compare their appearance with the photographs below. If the candle is black and wet, you can throw it away.
5. If all the spark plugs look good, reinstall them and connect the high-voltage wires. Cylinder operating order: 1-3-4-2; The cylinders are numbered (1, 2, 3, 4) from the engine crankshaft pulley.
NOTE
The Mitsubishi Lancer has ignition coils installed directly on the spark plugs of the 2nd and 4th cylinders. Connect the spark plug of the 1st cylinder with a long high-voltage wire to the coil on the spark plug of the 4th cylinder, and the spark plug of the 3rd cylinder with a short wire to the coil on the spark plug of the 2nd cylinder.
6. Take a spare spark plug. Secure it to the engine in any way.
Connect the high-voltage wire of the 1st cylinder to the spare spark plug. Let me in
engine. If engine interruptions do not worsen, replace the spark plug in cylinder 1 with a known good one. Attach the high voltage wire and start the engine. If the interruptions intensify, remove the ignition coil from the spark plug of the 2nd cylinder, insert a spare spark plug into its tip and fix it on the engine. Start the engine. If the interruptions do not increase, replace the spark plug in the 2nd cylinder. Consistently repeat this procedure with all cylinders to identify the faulty spark plug.
WARNINGS
Reliable contact of the spark plug body with ground is mandatory, since if an additional spark gap appears (larger than the gap between the spark plug electrodes), damage to the high-voltage circuit of the ignition coil or engine control system unit may occur. Try to carry out the check described above in the shortest possible period of time, since if unburned gasoline enters the exhaust gas catalytic converters for a long time, they may fail due to overheating, because gasoline will burn in them.
If, as a result of the measures taken, engine interruptions are not eliminated, check the compression in each cylinder (see “Checking compression in the cylinders,” page 78). Normal compression is more than 1.0 MPa (10 kgf/cm2), a difference of more than 0.1 MPa (1 kgf/cm2) in one cylinder indicates the need for engine repair.
Diagnostics of the engine condition by the appearance of the spark plugs
1. Normal candle.
Brown or grayish-yellow color and slight wear on the electrodes. Exact matching of the spark plug thermal value for the engine and operating conditions.
HELPFUL ADVICE
When replacing spark plugs with new ones, install spark plugs with the same characteristics recommended by the manufacturer.
2. Soot deposits.
Dry soot deposits indicate a rich air/fuel mixture or late ignition. Causes misfire, difficult engine starting and unstable engine operation. Check if the air filter is clogged and if the coolant and incoming air temperature sensors are working properly.
HELPFUL ADVICE
Use a hotter candle.
3. Oil deposits.
Oily electrodes and spark plug insulator. The reason is oil getting into the combustion chamber. Oil enters the combustion chamber through valve guides or piston rings. Causes difficult starting, cylinder misfires and jerking of the running engine. The cylinder head and piston group of the engine need to be repaired. Replace spark plugs.
4. Metal-containing plaque.
Deposits on the insulator skirt of brick-red iron oxides from anti-knock iron-containing additives (ferrocenes) to gasoline.
They are deposited in an even, dense layer. When the engine operates under heavy load under the influence of high temperature and pressure in the combustion chamber, the oxides are reduced to conductive See also: The car moves jerkily →
Varieties
Without a good spark, normal operation of a car with a gasoline engine is unthinkable. The task of the SZ is simple - to convert the current supplied by the Mitsubishi Lancer battery into a spark. The latter must be of such strength that the mixture is easily ignited.
Spark plugs for Mitsubishi Lancer 10 and 9 are consumable material. They are subject to mandatory updating after a certain time. According to the manufacturer's recommendations - after 30-60 thousand kilometers. The specific resource depends on the spark generator model - iridium ones last longer (4 years).
Classification by electrode type
Models are classified according to different parameters. One of them involves a difference in the electrode.
- Classic spark plugs consist of a main and an additional electrode. A spark jumps between them and ignites the gasoline. Such elements may have grooves of different shapes, increasing the size of the torch. There are also models with a protruding electrode; they can improve ignition, but are only suitable for certain power units.
Two-electrode spark plug 1 - central electrode; 2 - side electrode; 3 - V-shaped groove; 4 - U-shaped groove; 5 - difference in the amount of electrode protrusion. - Multi-electrode spark plugs are made using an improved design. Such elements may have several side electrodes, but only one central electrode. Multi-electrode varieties produce a more stable spark, improve engine performance and increase service life.
Multielectrode SZ - Torch candles are not equipped with additional electrodes. Sparking occurs using a spherical resonator, measured and non-stop. They are considered the best options today, but given their cost, they are not very popular.

Difference in heat number
The manual for Lancer 9 cars states that you need to use elements with a heat index of 20 and higher. It is advisable to follow these tips.
Thus, the elements are classified as follows.
- Hot ones, the indicator of which is 11-14.
- Average – 17-19.
- Cold - 20 and above.

Difference by material
Candles, or rather their electrodes, are made from different materials.
The best manufacturers
The most famous on the market are Denso, Bosch, Champion and NGK. The latter is known for being the first to receive permission to produce iridium spark plugs.
There is no point in relying on any one company. They all do their job equally well and do not have any special advantages in their class. Technical indicators are decisive.
It is obvious that the best candles in the world are mercilessly counterfeited. And here the car owner must be on guard. Models should be purchased only at large and well-known outlets, taking into account the cost of the original products. For example, if you know that the original SZ from Denso costs 300 rubles, then the option for 100 rubles should immediately arouse suspicion.
Replacement
If you do not know how to replace spark plugs on a Mitsubishi Lancer 9, then we provide instructions to help.
- Remove the pads from the low-voltage inputs of the ignition modules (marked with green arrows).
- Unscrew the coil mounting bolts.
- Remove the tip of the armored wire from the first well in the cylinder head cover.
- Remove modules from all wells.
- Unscrew the first spark plug; it is located inside the well.
To make it easier to turn out, the key should have a plastic or magnetic lock. Then all that remains is to remove all the other SZs and insert new ones in their place.
Choose your candles wisely for your lancer. Remember that expensive does not mean the best, and cheap does not always mean the worst. Try to choose elements with a large number of electrodes, soldered with precious metals. Give preference to products from well-known companies.

A spark plug is a special device designed to ignite a mixture of gasoline and air in internal combustion engines - unlike engines running on diesel fuel, any gasoline engine requires an ignition element.
Due to its design features, the spark plug creates an open arc that ignites the fuel, forcing the engine piston to oscillate.
Replacing spark plugs
According to the manufacturer's recommendation, conventional spark plugs should be replaced every 30,000 km or 2 years, whichever comes first. Spark plugs with platinum or iridium electrode coating must be replaced every 60,000 km or 4 years.
To replace, you only need two keys: a 10mm spanner to unscrew the ignition coils, and a 16mm spark plug wrench. The outer diameter of the key must be less than 21.7 mm, otherwise the key will not fit into the spark plug well. It is also advisable to buy a key with a magnetic or plastic lock. The key for a 16 valve VAZ is ideal.
