Why is there oil in the air filter VAZ 2109

To ensure that there is clean air in the interior of the VAZ 21099 car and that exhaust gases do not penetrate into it, it is necessary to regularly monitor the condition of the air barrier.

Proper functioning of the air filter will significantly extend the life of the engine and the car in particular. Read more about how to independently replace the VF in a VAZ 21099 in this article.

When is replacement required?

If oxygen filtration is poor, dust gets into the engine and into the oily fluids of the VAZ 21099. Then the oil distributes the dirt throughout the entire mechanism, forming a gap between the cylinder and the pistons and crankshaft bearings. This causes premature engine wear. Dust and dirt particles settle on the air flow sensor, which is installed behind the air filter to purify the incoming nitrogen and oxygen. The sensor has a significant impact on the air-fuel mixture. When the VF is contaminated, the signal is distorted, which leads to loss of power, loss of the engine and increased fuel consumption. For this reason, it is especially important to promptly monitor the serviceability of the VF and replace it within a strictly established period.

Modern air filters are capable of purifying up to 99.95% of atmospheric O2 in cars, which reduces the amount of dirt that gets into the engine. Thus, the VF prevents rapid wear of the internal combustion engine. The frequency of replacing the filter in a VAZ 21099 car, according to the maintenance regulations, is every 15,000 km. Parts are also replaced during scheduled maintenance every 2 years.

Replacing the air filter on a GAZ 52 injector

In order for the gas 52 injection fuel system in a car to work efficiently, the incoming air must be clean. Atmospheric O2 is purified using a WF. Periodically, this part becomes dirty (during the operation of the car), so it must be replaced frequently. The driver can handle this kind of work on his own. To do this, you just need to know the location of the air filter in the VAZ 21099 car.

The VF is located under the hood, to the right of the engine. In order for the part to be better preserved, the vehicle manufacturer placed the VF in a special plastic casing. To replace, you will need to disconnect the box fastenings, as well as the air outlet pipe. After this, you can easily get to the detail itself.

What to do if oil gets into the filter?

Surely, the most logical answer to this question would be engine repair. However, before repairing a worn-out unit, you need to determine where exactly the lubricant component is “breaking through.”

Any competent automotive specialist will always measure the compression in the engine cylinders. If the compression is below normal or the difference in pressure between individual cylinders exceeds the maximum permissible values (1 atm), then the fault most likely lies in the piston rings. In this case, it is necessary to carry out a major overhaul of the engine.

If you don’t have time to carry out repairs, you can use a method that will temporarily limit the oil sump’s access to the air purification system. To do this, disconnect the hose from the fitting located on the air filter housing and direct it downward: to where there are no other parts that you do not want to get dirty with oil. The fitting must be sealed with something so that the air is supplied evenly.

Of course, you can drive with such engines for quite a long time, but it is not advisable. Therefore, carry out urgent repairs as soon as possible.

Preparing for work

How to choose the right air filter for VAZ 21099?

The VF must have the necessary cleaning efficiency and the required dirt holding capacity. It is also worth paying special attention to its folded structure. A high-quality WF should be dense, and the corrugated paper should not be damaged. Each fold must fit tightly to the base and have no defects to prevent water from entering the internal combustion engine. Also, the VF material must be susceptible to the effects of vapors, fuel, and motor oils that accumulate on the surface of the part.

In WFs made of paper, dust particles are retained on the surface. In filters made of non-woven materials, they are captured along the perimeter of the entire thickness.

Plastic VFs are several times superior to paper filters in many respects. However, the cost of such parts will be too high.

For carburetor engines

(for a description of the procedure for replacing the air filter for injection engines, see below)

Replacing the air filter is included in the routine maintenance procedures for VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099 cars, as well as Lada Kalina, Lada Priora and Lada Granta, and all other cars. If you do not go through these procedures, you should monitor the condition of the filter yourself, because... when it is heavily polluted, engine power decreases, gasoline consumption increases and the emission of harmful combustion products into the atmosphere increases.

It is recommended to check the condition of the filter once every 10-15 thousand kilometers; if the car is operated in highly dusty conditions, then once every 5-10 thousand kilometers.

The filter replacement procedure is very simple. First of all, you need to remove the filter box cover by unscrewing the nut securing the filter cover and opening the three clamps around the perimeter of the box.

After this, remove the old filter and wipe the inside of the filter box body with a dry cloth to remove any remaining dirt and dust.

Then you should install a new filter, close the box lid, tighten the nut and place the clamps around the perimeter of the filter box. New filter installed!

You can see how to replace the air filter in the video below:

For injection (injection) engines

Replacing the air filter on models of the Samara family with injection (injection) engine modifications is regulated and must be done at least every 20 thousand km.

Replacing the filter element is quite simple (the description is suitable for models VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099 and VAZ 2113, 2114, 2115). First of all, you need to remove the mass air flow sensor:

Next, you need to remove the filter housing cover by unscrewing four screws:

After unscrewing the fastening screws, lift the cover up. The filter itself will be located in its grooves:

Pay attention to how it is installed. If suddenly for some reason you did not pay attention to this, then on the bottom of the housing there is an indicator in which direction the filter element should be installed. We install a new filter in place of the old one...

...and screw the lid back on. Install the mass air flow sensor. It is necessary to insert the sensor into the seat until it clicks.

We start the engine and check the operation. If its operation becomes unstable after installing a new filter, then the filter may be installed incorrectly. It is necessary to perform all the above operations again, only this time install the filter in the desired position.

Replacement frequency

If you do not promptly replace the air filter in a VAZ 21099 carburetor, its resistance to atmospheric O2 will increase, which disrupts the normal mixture-forming process in the engine. The consequence of malfunctioning VF will be excessive fuel consumption. Also, the car's dynamics will deteriorate until the filter curtain ruptures.

Don't put off replacing your air filter if you notice signs of needing replacement. The replacement frequency is up to 15 thousand km, depending on the realities of the roads on which the car is used.

How does an air filter work?

The dry type air filter of the VAZ 2109 car has replaceable filter elements. On the VAZ 2109, the air filter device includes:

  • Frame. It is attached to the carburetor with self-locking nuts using four studs and sealed with a rubber gasket.
  • Lid.

The lid and body are made by stamping from sheet steel, after which they are painted with a black primer. The cover is attached to the body with four spring latches, and in the center there is a bracket pin onto which a nut is screwed. The bracket is welded to the filter housing. The tightness of the unit is ensured by a sealing gasket made of polyurethane foam, which is glued to the filter cover. To prevent increased noise during inlet, the product cover is installed in a certain way. When installing it on the inlet pipe, the arrows of the two parts should be directed towards each other:

  • For VAZ 2109, the corrugation for the air filter is made of special filter cardboard.
  • The inner and outer shells are made of tin.

The filter element and shells are filled into elastic covers made of self-hardening sealant. Due to this, when installing the air filter cover, the filter element with the cover and housing is reliably sealed:

  • Cold air vent.
  • Warm air collector.
  • Corrugated hose.

In order to increase the collection of dust by the filter element, a pre-cleaner made of synthetic wool is placed on the outer perforated shell. Air is sucked in through the intake pipe located on the air filter housing, on which the crankcase exhaust ventilation manifold is located. The hose sucks crankcase gases through the manifold into the air filter. There, in the space behind the filter element, gases are mixed with clean air and sent to the carburetor.

  • A plastic thermostat with a cold air intake made of polyurethane foam is attached to the inlet pipe located on the body, which reduces the air intake noise. A corrugated hose connects the lower pipe of the thermostat and the warm air collector, which takes this air in the exhaust manifold area. When the engine is warm, the thermostat maintains the temperature of the air entering the air filter at 25 - 35 degrees Celsius

The thermostat consists of:

  • collapsible plastic case;
  • hinged damper;
  • traction;
  • thermoelectric element.

The lower arm of the damper is pivotally connected to the rod, and the second end of the rod is pressed by a spring against the pusher of the thermal power element, to which the rod is rigidly connected, which is screwed into the plug on the thermostat body. When heated, the heat-sensitive filler expands, which activates the pusher, which closes the damper through the rod. The suction air washes the thermal power element, which, when the air temperature rises above +35 degrees, closes the pipe through which warm air flows with a damper, and if the air temperature is less than -25 degrees, the damper closes the pipe for the movement of cold air. In this case, the air will be sucked in warm from the exhaust manifold. The intermediate position of the damper and the optimal temperature of the air entering the engine will be at a temperature of +25 to -35 degrees Celsius.

How to replace the air filter on a VAZ 2109 car

The procedure for doing the work yourself is as follows:

  • The nut securing the air filter cover is unscrewed.
  • The washer is removed.
  • Four spring clips are released.
  • The air filter cover is removed.
  • The filter is pulled out from the housing.

Tip: If oil gets on the filter element from the inside, this means that the engine throws out oil along with gases from the crankcase, which reduces the engine life of the element. In this case, you need to install an oil trap for crankcase gases.

  • Dust and debris are wiped off at the bottom of the device body.
  • A new filter element is installed.
  • The air filter is pressed against the lid.
  • The remaining operations are performed in reverse order.

Tip: If it is not possible to immediately install a new air filter, you need to close the hole in the carburetor, which will protect it from dirt.
