Most modern cars use a specialized electric pump. "Gazelle" is equipped with one of the best such devices in terms of price and quality ratio, so many are interested in its installation. However, motorists often do not know what such a device is and what it is used for.
In order to ensure optimal cooling of engine parts that heat up during operation, a special electric pump is used. Gazelle and other car models are equipped with systems that, in addition to the main one, can also perform a number of other functions:
- heating the air in the ventilation, air conditioning and heating system;
- cooling of gases that are formed in the recirculation system;
- oil cooling;
- cooling the working fluid used in the operation of the automatic transmission;
- cooling the air in the turbocharger.
What could they be?
Depending on how the effect is achieved, different electric pumps can be installed. Gazelle may have different models of such devices, but the most common are the following:
- Liquid. This system involves removing heat from excessively heated engine elements using fluid flow.
- Air. The same mechanics of operation, but using air flow.
- Combined. Provides for combining the previous two options.
On modern cars, a liquid electric pump is most often installed. With the help of such a system, the Gazelle is provided with uniform and efficient cooling, and also does not make so much noise, which is also important for many motorists. That is why in the future we will consider the principle of operation of cooling systems using the example of such equipment.
Design options
The structure of the cooling system is quite similar for diesel and gasoline engines, and it includes a large number of elements, including:
- coolant radiator;
- heater heat exchanger;
- radiator fan;
- oil radiator;
- thermostat;
- expansion tank;
Among other things, a centrifugal pump (electric pump) is installed in the car. The Gazelle today is equipped with the most popular version of such devices, which is widely used in other cars.
It is also worth noting the fact that the so-called cooling jacket is necessarily included in the circuit.
Purpose of the device
The radiator is used to cool the heated liquid with a flow of air, and in order to ensure increased heat transfer, it is equipped with a special tubular device. Along with the main radiator, it is often also planned to install additional equipment, such as an exhaust gas recirculation and oil radiator. The latter is used to reduce the temperature of the oil in the lubrication system.
The heater's heat exchanger is used to heat the air that passes through it. To ensure more efficient operation of this element, it is customary to install it directly in the place where the heated coolant exits the engine.
To compensate for changes in liquid volume due to temperature, it is customary to install a special expansion tank in the system, as a result of which refilling will be carried out through it.
In order for the liquid to circulate normally in the system, an electric pump (“Gazelle”) can be installed in it. The characteristics of such a device include the presence of different drives: belt, gear and many others. In some models of engines equipped with turbocharging, to ensure normal cooling of the charge air and turbocharger, it is customary to install an additional pump connected by the control unit.
The thermostat allows you to regulate the total amount of coolant that passes through the radiator, thereby maintaining the optimal temperature regime. The thermostat is usually mounted in a pipe, installed between the cooling jacket and the radiator.
On fairly powerful engines, it is customary to install a thermostat equipped with an electric heating system, with the help of which a two-stage control of the fluid temperature is achieved. For such control, its design provides three different operating positions, and at full load on the engine, with the help of electrical heating, it opens completely, after which the fluid temperature decreases to 90 ° C, and the engine’s tendency to possible detonation also decreases. In other situations, the liquid pumped by the electric pump (Gazelle) should have a temperature characteristic of 105 °C.
Which pump to choose
Unlike the standard VAZ and GAZ pump, which has a mechanical belt or chain drive, an electric pump is used as an additional driving force. Most often, motorists use an electric pump, which is standard equipment on the Gazelle car.
The unit has high performance, but the quality of its manufacture leaves much to be desired. Therefore, before installing such a pump, it is recommended to disassemble it, coat all seals with automotive sealant, reassemble it and let it dry for 24 hours.
Note: the above applies to old-style pumps. New GAZ pumps have good build quality. However, over time, they also begin to leak.
An alternative to GAZ products is to install an additional pump manufactured by Bosh. These units have high build quality and a different operating principle. The blade rotates under the action of a magnetic coupling, and not an electric motor, as in the first case.

By using such a scheme, the manufacturer was able to abandon sealing connections and almost completely eliminate the possibility of leakage. The disadvantages of the imported unit include its high cost and relatively low productivity (700 liters versus 1200 liters per hour for the GAZ unit).
How does the cooling system work? Description of circulation path
The cooling work is mainly provided by the engine management system. In modern drives, the operating algorithm is implemented on the basis of a mathematical model that takes into account many different parameters, after which the optimal activation conditions are set, as well as the operating time of the structural elements.
The coolant is transported through the system due to forced circulation, which is provided by an electric pump (Gazelle). Repair of such equipment in the event of problems should be carried out as soon as possible, since otherwise the engine can quickly fail due to excessive temperature rise.
The operating principle of this device is such that the liquid moves through the “cooling jacket”, while providing engine cooling and, accordingly, heating the coolant. It itself can move along or across, depending on the technology used.
Depending on the temperature, the liquid circulates in a large or small circle. After starting the engine, both the equipment itself and the coolant contained in it are at a low temperature. To speed up warming up, the liquid begins to move in a small circle without entering the radiator.
As it heats up, the thermostat gradually begins to open, as a result of which it moves in a large circle, directly through the radiator. If necessary, the liquid can also be additionally cooled by an air flow from a fan.
After complete cooling, the electric pump from the Gazelle on the VAZ-2114 again supplies liquid to the “cooling jacket”, and during engine operation this cycle is repeated many times.
Why install a pump on other cars?
The electric pump design from the Gazelle provides for its installation on many other domestic cars, which modern drivers quickly understood and adopted. With the onset of cold weather, every person begins to think about how to prepare their “iron horse” for winter, because hardly anyone wants to freeze while driving. Of course, every domestic car has its own stove, but its power is often not enough, and the electric pump from the Gazelle on the VAZ-2107 can significantly increase the efficiency of the heating system.
Another pump
An additional pump for the VAZ-2107 stove can also improve heating in the car. The pump is usually installed next to the battery and hoses. When installing, you need to remove one hose that comes directly from the unit. Connect this hose to the additional pump. The hose should go from the block to the bow of the pump, and the outlet hose should go to the stove.

Power for the additional pump is taken from the heated rear window button. There is only one positive wire coming from the additional pump motor, and the housing itself is ground.
Powering the pump is simple:
- The very first plug with wires is removed, and the second gray wire, responsible for heating the rear window, will be our basis.
- We wind the power from the pump to it and bring it under the hood.
- To keep the wire more secure, you can solder it.
- After installing the plug back, you can say that the pump is ready for use.
Sometimes an additional pump is installed on the VAZ-2107 stove due to poor air circulation. In addition, at low idle speeds there may be no circulation at all, and the flow of antifreeze to the stove is poor.
Based on the results of operation, the additional heater on the VAZ-2107 will turn on every time the rear window heating is turned on.
But you can connect the pump in another way. To do this, you will need a connector from the injectors/knock sensor from the VAZ. It can be purchased at any auto parts store.
It is necessary to solder two wires to the ends of the connector of the part, after which everything is hidden in the corrugation and sealed with electrical tape.
Separately we bring out the wire for connecting the ground. We find it on a bracket nearby. We carry the harness up, connect the heater resistors to the block, where the plus was taken from.
As a result, when the heating is turned on, another pump is turned on, consuming only 1.5 A in operating mode. In this case, you can not install a relay and connect directly to the positive wire in the block.
What does an additional pump do?
Increasing the efficiency of the heating system at idle speed is the main task for which an electric pump (Gazelle) is installed. Repair of such a device is not required as often, and its efficiency is much higher compared to a standard heating system for passenger cars, so such a simple remedy has become extremely widespread today.
If the heater normally blows warm air at idle, and the hot air turns on only after you start driving, it means that there is insufficiently good fluid circulation in the cooling system. The electric pump from the Gazelle on the VAZ-2109 and other similar cars ensures a much faster movement of antifreeze, which will have a positive effect on the temperature of the air from the stove even while parked.
It is worth noting that many people consider the installation of an additional pump to be another idea of the Kulibins, who are trying by some means to improve their cars with new methods, but in fact, the use of such technology has long been practiced by such well-known companies as BMW and Mercedes Benz.
How to install an additional pump
Installation of an additional pump on a VAZ stove can be done in the engine compartment or under the interior panel. The first option is preferable, since in this case the sound of the pump does not enter the interior, and there is also no risk of flooding the interior with antifreeze if it leaks. Depending on the installation location, the unit can be mounted at the mounting location of the standard engine compartment sound insulation or on additional brackets.
The installation of an additional water pump on the VAZ-2110 and other models of the domestic automobile industry is carried out on the heater supply pipe. In this way, it is possible to achieve a more active injection of coolant into the “furnace” radiator and increase heat transfer.
Note: increased pressure in the cooling system can lead to failure of poorly secured pipes or breakdown of the radiator. Therefore, before installing additional equipment, it is recommended to conduct a complete diagnostics of the CO.
Before installing an additional pump, the antifreeze is drained. After this, the pipe at the intended installation site is cut in half using a sharp blade, and the resulting ends are put on the pump outlets. It is important to ensure that the arrow drawn on one of the outlets, indicating the direction of fluid circulation, is directed towards the radiator. The pipes placed on the outlets are secured with clamps. It is better to use Norma brand screw clamps, since products from lesser-known brands often have sharp edges and cut the pipe.

The connection diagram to the on-board electrical network may vary depending on what goals the car owner sets for himself. If the pump is installed for more efficient cooling, it makes sense to connect it in such a way that it runs constantly when the ignition is on. The unit can be connected directly from the battery, but the circuit must be closed using a relay, which is activated after turning the start key.
If you plan to install an additional pump in the heating system to improve the operation of the stove at XX, it is better to connect it through a button. In this case, the power circuit will include a relay, a fuse, a pump button and a battery. Electricity is supplied via a single-wire circuit. The “minus” in this case is the car body. Using this scheme, the car owner gets the opportunity to turn on the pump only when there is a need for it. Note: it is better to install an additional pump using a second power supply connection scheme, since in extreme cold, its prolonged operation can lead to underheating of the motor and related malfunctions.
What can I install?
Some people prefer to install devices from foreign manufacturers (for example, equipment from Bosch). But many more often use the Gazelle electric pump. Reviews about this device from people who use it are often quite positive, since it allows you to significantly improve the performance of your car for a small amount of money.
The Gazelle pump is a standard centrifugal pump. During operation, the liquid flow is thrown by the blades to the periphery from the center, which provides a vacuum at the inlet and increases the force of pumping the liquid. It is worth noting that the installed electric pump from the Gazelle on the VAZ cannot pump air due to too large gaps between the housing and the impeller.
Tools for installing an additional pump
Modernization of the VAZ-2115 heater consists of installing an electric pump, which will save passengers and drivers from the cold, especially when the vehicle is idling.
Before starting installation, prepare the following tools and materials:
- Electric pump suitable for a gazelle. Experts recommend this type of pump; it pumps heat into the cabin in the most efficient way. Externally, the device resembles a centrifugal pump, where the fluid flow is rejected from the center of the periphery using blades.
- Relay. Ideally, a starter or ignition device would be suitable; here the open contacts are more convenient.
- Small pieces of hose made of aluminum and reinforced material.
- Coolant with a volume of 2 liters or more. You can take antifreeze, antifreeze or, in extreme cases, ordinary water.
- 6 clamps.

What could they be?
“Gazelle” pumps can be very different, and their first difference is the year of manufacture. More modern models vibrate much less, and, in principle, connecting an electric pump (Gazelle) from new models will save you from a lot of hassle and problems. The main problem that most often occurs in such devices is their leakage, which leads to rather unpleasant consequences and the need for repair. Fortunately, the procedure is relatively quick and cheap, since many workshops easily service the electric pump on the Gazelle, the installation of which is increasingly practiced by modern motorists today.
It is worth noting that if you can choose a truly high-quality device and at the same time carry out the installation procedure correctly, the likelihood of it breaking will be minimized.
How is the installation carried out?
Now let's talk about how to connect the electric pump from the Gazelle. It’s worth saying right away that this procedure is quite responsible, so if you are not confident in your abilities, it is best to entrust it to some specialists.
Before installing an additional electric pump (Gazelle), try to wait a little while the antifreeze cools down in the car, then drain it from the unit into some clean container (the container does not have to be clean if you later fill in a new one) .
Now unscrew the top four screws on the pump and lubricate the rubber gasket with sealant. When assembling the pump, thin long bolts with nuts should be installed instead of self-tapping screws.
Many people think about where it is better to install an additional pump - in the gap of the outlet or supply pipe. In fact, there is no difference in where it will be placed, the main thing is to install it during the main flow. Although it is worth saying that most motorists who practice this option for upgrading their heating system say that it is best to install a new pump before the stove radiator.
Fastening is carried out using one of the following devices:
- washer reservoir mounting stud;
- standard Shumka mount mounted on the engine shield;
- studs near the battery.
The most common is the last option, which was discussed above, where the device is positioned so that the horizontal pipe of the pump faces the block (for this, the iron clamp is first opened).
The electric pump can be connected to any location convenient for you. Some people install it on the recirculation button, others install it on heated mirrors, the self-propelled control unit when the stove is activated, and many other elements.
Now disconnect the white/blue and yellow/blue wires from the recirculation valve, and then reconnect them as follows:
- white/blue connects to terminal 85 of the relay;
- yellow/blue connects to terminal 30;
- terminal 87 is connected to the electric pump wire;
The general installation procedure is as follows:
- The hose through which liquid is supplied to the heater is disconnected from the outlet pipe of the block head, after which it is connected to the horizontal pipe of the electric pump. The length of this hose is enough to complete such an operation, so there is no need to worry about this.
- Connect a hose to the vertical branch pipe, which is connected from two S-shaped hoses 2108 (or another suitable one), they are often located in the cabin between the heater radiator and the tap. The second end is connected to the block column in the place where the standard one was previously connected. Ultimately, all the clamps are pulled through, and the main thing is not to forget to tighten the drain plug in the block.
- Antifreeze is filled to the maximum level, the internal combustion engine is spinning and all equipment is inspected for leaks. Then the pump is turned on and possible leaks are eliminated again with tightening of various clamps. After about half an hour of engine operation, the antifreeze level is brought to normal levels.
Installing an additional pump on a VAZ 2108/09
When operating a car in winter, it is necessary to maintain a comfortable air temperature in the cabin. The standard stove does not always cope with this. Some car owners install an additional water pump, which increases the efficiency of coolant circulation in the interior heater circuit.
An additional water pump increases coolant circulation inside the stove
The additional pump cuts into the break in the hose through which the antifreeze enters the heater radiator. To do this, you will need several hoses with a total length of about 50 cm and four clamps to secure them. Usually a pump from a GAZelle is installed, powered by an electrical network.
The procedure is as follows.
- For convenience, the battery and air filter are removed.
Remove the battery and air filter
The additional water pump from the GAZelle runs on electricity
The pump should not be installed above the thermostat
One hose connects the pump to the engine, the other to the heater radiator
As practice has shown, this allows you to heat the air leaving the stove to 50–55 o C. At low temperatures, the driver can be in the cabin without outer clothing. Naturally, such a device is used only in winter.
A more complex connection diagram for the second pump involves the use of an additional relay.
