Brake pads for VAZ 2110

The braking system is undoubtedly one of the most important in the entire car. Its effectiveness directly affects driving safety. One of the most important elements of the entire system are the pads, which are characterized by the fact that they wear out quite quickly. In our rating of brake pads for VAZ, we will answer frequently asked questions and help you choose the best brake pads for VAZ.

Classification of brake pads

When looking for brake pads, let's consider the type first. Here we distinguish between organic, metal and ceramic, semi-metallic, glued and riveted.

Organic brake pads.

They contain carbon resins that bind carbon, metal, rubber and glass. Unfortunately, they wear out quite quickly, and this is because they are classified as soft. However, they damage discs to a lesser extent and make almost no noise when braking. Their big plus is also their relatively low price, which makes them the most popular among this product category.

The disadvantage in their case, however, is the large emission of dust, which leads to the formation of rims that are difficult to remove dirt. In addition, high temperatures are generated during braking, which can cause the surface of the pad to smooth out, which will negatively affect braking performance. This phenomenon is called metallization of friction linings. Pads of this type are one of the best brake pads for VAZ.

Metal pads.

Their characteristic feature, as the name suggests, is that they contain up to 65% metal. For this reason, they are also durable and hard, which means they do not wear out for a long time. Their use can negatively affect the brake discs themselves, which, on the contrary, are subject to faster wear. Loud braking can also be a problem for some drivers. Another disadvantage may be limited efficiency at low temperatures.

Metal pads also have a high coefficient of friction, very good thermal conductivity and resistance to the harmful effects of high temperatures. All this affects fading, which negatively affects the efficiency of the entire system. They are designed for heavy vehicles.

Ceramic pads.

What brake pads are best for a VAZ? Ceramic, of course. They are the most technically advanced and accordingly more expensive. As the name suggests, their main component is ceramic fibers. In addition to their composition, we also find a filler that is resin and silicon, carbon or metal.

These pads collect little dust, so there is no excessive dirt on the rim. They are also durable and resistant to harmful weather conditions, while being quiet. They also have a moderate effect on brake disc wear, guaranteeing good braking performance regardless of conditions. However, their use requires the installation of special ventilated discs. They are most often installed in sports cars, but they can also be seen in classic passenger cars.

Semi-metallic brake pads.

Depending on the manufacturer, they contain from 30 to 65% metal, most often steel wool, wire and cast iron, copper and graphite powder mixed together. Semi-metallic pads have good heat transfer properties, which ensures effective braking. Their only drawback may be loud operation and too low braking efficiency in the low temperature range.

Test of brake pads on a VAZ-2114. Five hundred Celsius

It's plus thirty outside, fifty degrees in the car - it's too hot to stand next to it, let alone do anything... It seems that it smells forever, saturated with a specific soot, brake dust, a black cloud hanging in the air at the slightest touch to the wheels. It’s hard for everyone: people, tires, pieces of iron, blue from constant temperature changes. These are our latest experiments designed to determine what kind of brakes will suit an editorial tuning car. He is finally back in action, full of energy. Behind us is another engine overhaul (with replacement of pistons and honing of the cylinder block), a deep modernization of its control program (in general, it was the main culprit of the first failure), and accelerated running-in. To the credit of the tuners from Torgmash, they unconditionally admitted their (and not only) mistakes and tried to eliminate component flaws in the future, eliminating the very capricious and unreliable mass air flow sensor from the circuit. After which the electronic “brains” were tuned to a sporting mood, thereby depriving them of dependence on the whims of unreliable components. As a result, the cold start became a little worse, but the “fourteenth” drove well, completely forgetting about the previous problems. This is confirmed by the results of our measurements. And although these figures are far from records, we can talk about certain successes, at least in comparison with a standard car. And if so, it’s not a sin to adjust the brakes, because there are clearly not enough regular ones. The fact is that conventional non-ventilated discs are sensitive to heat, and after several cycles of intense braking, the system parts begin to smoke, and the results float as if smeared with oil. What to do? Of course, you can immediately start experimenting with pads; some will probably be more resistant to high temperatures. However, practice shows that this does not fundamentally change the situation. Therefore, based on the experience of our numerous tests and examinations, first of all we install on the car front ventilated discs and brake calipers from a sixteen-valve “ten” with fourteen-inch wheels. The result is very convincing. Even with standard factory TIIR pads, the car can withstand several braking sessions from 100 km/h to a stop, showing fairly stable results. The temperature of the working surface, which does not rise above 400°C, is also encouraging. Now you can experiment with friction compounds, fortunately, four sets of branded products EBC, Ferodo and Pagid are waiting in unopened boxes. And there is a surprise here. Another participant suddenly joins the current list - pads produced under the Za Rulem brand. Obtained only for verification tests, they suddenly introduce intrigue into the measurement results...

It’s damn nice to teach a car not only to drive more or less quickly, but also to stop. The resulting reduction in braking distance is very encouraging, allowing us to talk about hidden reserves. And this is on absolutely standard tires of size 185/60R14. And if so, we decided not to stop there. Ahead is the selection of tires - of course, with specific tuning features. 1. “PAGID” Price - 860 rubles. We bought these pads, offered by one of the Moscow tuning companies, without hiding our goal: they say, we want to improve the brakes of a “charged” car. The result was not surprising, but not disappointing either. The main advantage of “pagids” over the “standard” is reliable and stable operation in a heated state. Whatever one may say, a five-meter gain is a significant argument in favor of a tuning kit. It is also important that after testing the products remained operational.

2. "FERODO-PREMIER". Price - 851 rub. In relation to tuning tasks, they turned out to be very similar to the previous version, with the only difference being that the car slows down a little better at the beginning of the distance, so to speak, before the main temperature shock. Otherwise, it’s not the best, but a fairly reliable option that fully satisfies the assigned tasks.

3. EBC-GREEN Price - 1800 rub. According to the instructions, these pads are directly recommended for fast driving and light competitions. The manufacturer even indicated the permissible operating temperature - 550°C. Indeed, “green” ones demonstrate the most even and stable results over the entire temperature range. Even by the end of the races, the braking distance figures look like a carbon copy, only the pedal effort increases. Great! Alas, there is a serious drawback - they do not tolerate overheating. 4. “FERODO-RACING” Price - 1733 rubles. The advantage is minimal, but it cannot be ignored. The “Fourteenth” has become more reliable in braking and more tolerant of overheating. Regardless of the temperatures reached, the braking distance leveled out. True, there are complaints about stability. The car either stops after 43 meters, then suddenly takes some liberties. 5. “BEHIND THE DRIVING” Price - 270 rubles. I won’t lie, at first we looked at the yellow-green box with skepticism, planning to use these pads as an analogue of the standard ones. They say they will fit within 46-47 meters - and that’s good. The result shown made me believe in what seemed unattainable. There are a fair 40 meters of braking distance, and you can only complain about one thing: the force on the pedal is high. Otherwise, an excellent result, comparable only to good Western samples. At the same time, the pads survived and remained functional. 6. TIIR Price - 160 rubles. Installed on the conveyor, they quickly began to cause complaints. Moreover, after 25-30 braking cycles the pads had to be thrown away: the working surface melted and cracked. The main disadvantage in light of increased demands is the low heat resistance and excessive pedal force. SERGEY VOSKRESENSKY, ANATOLY KARPENKOV, VYACHESLAV LUKYANOV. Important parameters when choosing brake pads

To choose the best brake pads for a VAZ, you need to pay attention to the coefficient of friction of the friction material and its behavior under various operating conditions; they are key issues that allow you to evaluate the quality of a given brake pad. Friction material in good quality blocks provides:

  • high and stable coefficient of friction regardless of speed, temperature or pressure in the brake system,
  • resistance to short-term decrease in the coefficient of friction that occurs after several brakes (the so-called fading phenomenon),
  • Quiet braking and no vibration,
  • rapid regeneration (return to original properties),
  • low level of wear.

It will be better if the brake pads match the type of car and the type of braking system. The vehicle's VIN number can be helpful here. Remember that all technical data of a car can be restored in a short time by ordering a VIN report. When choosing the optimal blocks, you can also use the manufacturer’s official recommendations. It is also worth comparing them with your driving style.

The price of brake pads usually goes hand in hand with their quality. Therefore, for good pads from reputable manufacturers who subject them to a series of tests, you will have to pay much more than for low-quality fakes that only meet the minimum requirements.

On average, for a set of rear or front brake pads 2110, we will pay 1000 - 2000 rubles. Of course, there are more expensive products on the market, as well as slightly cheaper ones. High-quality pads are recommended for owners of cars with heavy weight and power who prefer dynamic driving or driving in mountainous areas. In a situation where the driver’s driving style is characterized by the fact that the car moves calmly and rarely develops high speeds, cheaper units with weaker parameters will be sufficient.

VAZ brake pads: ceramic or friction?

On the modern auto parts market there is a great variety of brake pads for vases , which are divided among themselves both by price and functionality. For everyday driving, when high speeds are not used and therefore there is no need to press the brakes with full force, conventional brake pads made of friction material are quite suitable.

There are two types of such brake pads as standard.

The toughest are non-asbestos brake pads , whose reinforcing component, as the name suggests, does not contain asbestos, and other stiffer fillers include steel wool, brass and even copper filings. Such pads are mostly used for sports driving and they can make grinding sounds when braking hard. Serious tuning of the VAZ engine requires modification of the brake system.

But for ordinary cars that like leisurely driving around the city or outside, you can also use traditional friction brake pads that have a special special asbestos composition. These pads are soft, require frequent replacement, but are cheaper than others.

Now there is a new fashion - street racing. For such motorsport, when you have to drive fast and also stop the car quickly, all of the above pads will not work effectively under heavy loads - they will simply burn.

For this purpose, there are special ceramic brake pads that can withstand enormous loads due to the ceramic component. In turn, ceramic pads are produced in their own series, for example, such series as “street”, “sport” or “extreme” are widely known. You can look at them in more detail: as a rule, if ceramic “street” pads are used, then they have a composition that allows you to drive freely in city conditions. Such pads are valuable because they contain ceramic inclusions that do not require heating. In cases where the driver sees the “sport” label, this will mean that such pads can be driven both around the city and on the race track. These pads have a larger ceramic composition than street pads and require pre-heating to achieve the desired braking effect. That is, you need to accelerate and press the brakes several times. The ceramics will warm up and begin to press against the brake disc with good force. When a driver buys the “extreme” series, he must remember that these pads are intended exclusively for racing, and for everyday driving around the city they are completely unacceptable, as they require good warming up. In addition, when driving fast, disc brakes still heat up, in which case you also have to install ventilated disc brakes. So what conclusion can we come to?

To effectively take advantage of a particular system, it makes most sense to have two cars: one will be designed for driving in urban conditions, while the second will be used exclusively for the track. In the latter case, ceramic pads will be the most effective, since they will be able to withstand temperatures up to 650C, the wheel rims will no longer be stained with black dust from burnt friction material and, naturally, the squeaks characteristic of cheaper non-asbestos pads will not be heard.
