When to change the drive belt on a car?

One of the main problems when belts used in various types of drives wear out is the presence of extraneous sounds that arise during operation.

The task of the installed pulleys is to transmit rotational motion to the attachments of the power plant.

If you get into such a situation, one or more belts may break. When should you change the drive belt to avoid getting into a difficult situation?

Belt drive. The drive belt on a machine is a part of the belt drive necessary to be able to transmit rotation from the motor.

The process is ensured by the action of friction or meshing force, for which V-shaped or timing belts are used. The opinion that the timing belt does not belong to the drive belt is also incorrect.

Drive belts are divided into several groups:

• Timing belts, which is a belt transmission of the gas distribution mechanism;
• Belt drives of auxiliary systems, that is, engine attachments.

There are three types of belts used on cars:

1. Timing belt having a toothed shape;
2. Poly V-belt, the purpose of which is to transmit rotational motion from the power plant to attachments;
3. V-belt with a similar purpose.

In Russia, these types of belts also have second names - flat (for poly-V-ribbed) and rivulet (for V-belt).

The difference from the timing belt is that it requires more careful attention and timely replacement as planned. Despite this, they also have their own time frame within which they must be replaced without waiting for them to fail.

The occurrence of a squeak or whistle becomes a sign that the belt may have become loose and is slipping along the pulleys.

Consequences of cracks in the drive belt. If there are such defects on car drive belts, cracks or abrasions will appear on them. Another sign of this type of breakdown is a whistling sound during operation. This indicates that the belt requires replacement. If replacement is not carried out in time, the associated equipment will stop working. For example, if its service life has expired, then after some time it will break.

Typically, if the drive belt breaks, a loud bang will be heard from under the hood. For example, if the alternator belt breaks, no current will be supplied. The corresponding symbol will light up on the instrument panel.

The second consequence of a break is the cessation of operation of the power steering, which can make it more difficult to rotate the steering wheel. But the most serious consequence can be a break in the belt that rotates the water pump, which makes it impossible for cooling fluid to circulate throughout the engine. CHANGING THE GENERATOR BELT

Surely, if you are looking for tips on how to remove the alternator belt and then put it back in place, you have already encountered the problem of its malfunction. Know that in order to perform the replacement correctly, you do not need to contact a car service; you can easily perform this procedure yourself . So, first we need to decide what tools we need to replace the alternator belt:

Replacing the VAZ 2110 alternator belt

What we need for the replacement: a good set of tools, a jack (to raise the engine) and a new belt.

Before starting work, it is advisable to treat all threaded connections on the tensioner with WD-40 liquid to loosen everything, otherwise there is a possibility of breaking the bolts.

As it turned out, everything is not so simple here. When installing power steering or air conditioning on the engine, the generator was moved slightly upward and in order to replace the belt, it must be threaded through an additional engine support.

Why they did this is not clear, but there was more work.

Here the replacement process is almost the same, but you need to tinker around with the additional engine mount.

We need to unscrew and pull out the central bolt of the support, then lift the engine a little and thread a belt into the gap between the pillow and the engine support. This method is suitable for models with installed air conditioning, but if power steering is installed, the bolt will not come out completely and will rest against the pulley.

To remove the bolt, you need to remove the pulley or completely unscrew the additional support pad. By jacking up the engine a little and turning the mount, you can thread a new belt.

I don’t know which is easier, removing the pulley or unscrewing the support, both methods are very inconvenient, so the choice is yours.

Let's go back a little to the first option if an air conditioner is installed.

You can tinker and completely unscrew the support pad, or you can completely unscrew only the central bolt.

We install a mechanical support under the car body.

Now we need to place a jack under the engine and lift it a little. The photo below shows where to install the jack, and do not forget to place a wooden block - this will prevent deformation of the oil pan.

1. First, you need to put the vehicle on the handbrake with fourth gear engaged;
2. Next, open the hood and remove the protective cover from the belt, now you need to loosen the tension, then you can remove it;
3. Now we remove the generator drive pulley from its place, while leaving its bolt in place. Remove the vehicle from gear.
4. Then, you need to turn the crankshaft clockwise, while you need to keep an eye on the mark and the flywheel, they are visible in the hole in the clutch housing. You need to twist it until it becomes parallel to the middle strip of the scale;
5. When the mark is in the indicated position, you need to unscrew the tension roller, by the way, with the help of it the tension is released. Now we remove the damaged spare part.
