Normal operation of a car heater provides the driver and passengers with a comfortable ride in the cold season. But sometimes the car’s heating fails, for example, the heater radiator may leak, and the freezing driver takes longer to react to sudden changes in road conditions.
Using the Lada Priora as an example, we will consider a way to independently solve this problem. Such repairs can be done in the garage yourself, although at first it may scare away less experienced car enthusiasts.
Difficulty of choice
If it has become noticeably cold inside the car, it is worth checking the car's heating system. Most likely, the problem will be detected in the heater radiator and you will soon have to buy a new one.
The Internet is full of advertisements for the sale of heater radiators for Lada Priora, but how to choose a quality product and not “run into” a fake?
The first thing that should indicate the originality of a part is its price. High-quality spare parts cannot be cheap; manufacturers of original radiators will not allow this.
Second. The original radiator of the car heating system has small cells, i.e. the distance between the vertical slats is minimal, only factory equipment can provide this. Factory equipment “works” only with high-quality metal; the honeycombs should not be too soft.
Manufacturers of counterfeit products save on small things; they do not install “liquid swirlers” in counterfeit radiators, plastic parts that increase the heat transfer of the coolant in the radiator of the heating system. To check their presence, you should shake the part; a specific sound will indicate their presence or absence. If they are made of soft material, this method is useless.
Once the radiator has been selected, it is time to change it. Replacing an old one or installing a new radiator in a Priora requires certain actions.
Factors influencing the price level
Radiators for Priora are sold in different places. When choosing the right spare part, car owners notice a wide range of prices. The wide cost range is explained by the influence of such pricing factors:
- Quality.
- Originality.
- Place of purchase.
- Seller's fame.
- Popularity of the part manufacturer.
- Type of spare part.
- The need to order a delivery service.
Replacing a heater radiator in a Priora without air conditioning
The layout of the Priora heating system is traditional for domestic cars, its main components are:
- radiator (heat exchanger) of the heater, in which the liquid is heated;
- fan - it disperses air heated from the radiator throughout the cabin;
- regulators - with their help, the intensity of the fan operation is changed and the flow of warm air is regulated by zones.
Before the main work, turn off the power to the car, i.e., remove the negative terminal from the battery.
After turning off the power to the car, you can begin to remove the windshield trim. If you are too lazy to dismantle the wiper arms before doing this, certain difficulties will arise in the future. Next, disconnect the tubes (plastic) for supplying washer fluid to the injectors. Now the decorative trim of the windshield can be easily removed, just unscrew the 7 screws that hold it in place. Although this may still be prevented by the hood seal.
Then the next step is to remove the hood seal. At the front, the two sides of the seal are connected together and secured with a screw; it must be unscrewed. Using a flat tool (screwdriver or knife), remove the plugs and unscrew the screws. We remove the seal that may interfere with the removal of the decorative trim, after which it should come off easily.
Everything worked out - we move on and remove the sound insulation of the engine compartment. We unscrew the screws securing it, remove the covers one by one (the order does not matter). Before releasing the clamps that hold the pipes, place a container to drain the coolant; this will save you some money.
The wiring can be removed using keys 8 and 10. Unscrew the 4 nuts and put the harness aside. Using a 13 key, remove the bracket from the brake pedal and move it to the side - the road to the radiator is open. Use a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the 3 screws and remove the radiator.
Install the heat exchanger, following the completed cycle, but starting from the end. It’s up to you to decide which Lada Priora heater radiator to install, repaired or new.
Cleaning the Priora air conditioner: a method for eliminating unpleasant odors in the cabin
The air conditioning system in a car serves to create comfortable conditions for everyone inside the car. But for some reason, sometimes instead of a cool breeze on a hot summer day, a wave of unpleasant odors hits the driver and passengers from the air conditioner. This means it's time to clean your air conditioner.

Air conditioning system
First you need to imagine what it is and how the air conditioning on a Priora works.
Cooling of the air supplied to the cabin from the condenser through the deflectors occurs due to the property of freon to absorb a large amount of heat during evaporation.
The design of the air conditioning system in general terms is as follows:
- The sealed system is filled with freon mixed with a special oil that dissolves in liquid freon. Freon serves as a refrigerant, oil lubricates the compressor and the system as a whole.
- When the air conditioner is turned on, the electromagnet is activated, the pressure disk (3) is magnetized to the pulley (2) and activates the compressor (1). The pulley (2) is connected to the car engine by means of a belt. When the air conditioner is turned off, the pulley rotates idle.
- The compressor (1) creates a pressure of up to 15 atmospheres, heating the freon during compression. Next, the hot freon enters the condenser (4). It is commonly referred to as the air conditioner radiator. There, with the fan (5) turned on, it cools slightly, turning into a liquid state.
- The still heated freon enters the dryer (6), otherwise it enters the receiver. The freon in the receiver is cleaned of mechanical contaminants from the radiator. The air outside the receiver is heated and dried. There is also an inspection eye (9), through which you can assess the amount of freon in the system and take care of its timely filling if there is little refrigerant. The receiver contains: a sensor (7) for turning on the second speed of the fan (5), if the condenser (4) is not cooled enough; sensor (8) turns off the compressor (1) if the pressure in the system is too high; sensor (11) switches off the compressor if the evaporator is too cold.
- From the receiver, freon enters the thermostatic valve (10) and through it enters the evaporator (12). When the evaporator is full, the freon is at boiling point and the valve closes automatically. When boiling, freon absorbs a large amount of heat from the environment - all surfaces of the evaporator are greatly cooled.
- The fan (13) drives a stream of air through the evaporator, due to which the air is cooled and enters the Priora’s cabin already cool. Freon returns to the compressor (1).
- The moisture that settles on the evaporator is removed through a drain tube; it is usually discharged to the bottom of the car.
Taking into account the design of the air conditioner on the Priora, you can see the main reasons for poor operation of the air conditioner and the occurrence of an unpleasant odor in the cabin:
- Air conditioner radiator grille clogged with dust, etc.;
- Condensation of moisture from the air on the cold surfaces of the evaporator and the proliferation of airborne bacteria and fungi, as well as the occurrence of chemical contaminants.

So it needs to be cleaned
The air conditioning radiator on the Priora is located in front of the engine radiator. This means that it gets clogged first. A clogged radiator stops performing its function - cooling what's inside it.
In addition, it also poorly allows air flow to the radiator of the car itself and interferes with engine cooling. This problem can be solved quite easily during washing. The air conditioner radiator honeycombs are washed with a stream of water.
It is very important not to apply strong pressure, which can damage the thin walls of the system, which will cause freon leakage and require replacement of the air conditioner radiator.
Cleaners
An evaporator clogged with dirt cannot do its job - cool the air that goes into the cabin.
Dirt accumulated on wet surfaces acts as a heat insulator, and when constantly moistened, it also serves as a good breeding ground for mold, fungi and bacteria, which in the process of their life create unpleasant-smelling substances.
And if you also smoke in the Priora with the air conditioning turned on and the air recirculating, then the substances in the tobacco smoke will join them, adding a corresponding amber.
To clean and disinfect the evaporator, there is a large selection of aerosol products with different odors, which, according to the instructions, should be sprayed onto the evaporator and the air intake. To do this, you need to remove the cabin filter, shake the can of the product and use the attached tube to apply its contents to the evaporator.
Install a new cabin filter and start the engine. Turn on the air conditioner and set the fan to maximum speed, close all doors and windows. Cleaning is carried out within 10 minutes; there should be no people or animals in the cabin. After cleaning, the interior is ventilated.
Aerosol products are used for disinfection, and foam products must be used for disinfection and cleaning.

For the inquisitive minds of Russians, buying ready-made products is not the most interesting thing. Craftsmen have already read the composition of some air conditioner cleaning products and came to the conclusion that the same product can be purchased at a pharmacy at a price ten times lower than a special one. And spray it with a sprayer for spraying indoor flowers.

Products that can be used to disinfect the evaporator on Priora.
Means | Description |
Chlorhexidine | Pharmacy solution of chlorhexidine digluconate at a concentration of 0.05%. Used for disinfection in medical institutions, operating rooms, and for washing hands. |
Lysoformin 3000 | Preparation of a 5% solution - 50 ml of product per 1 liter of water. An effective disinfectant. |
Chloramine B | Working solution - 1 tbsp. for 1 liter of water. It is used in medical and children's institutions for disinfection. Sold in household chemical stores. |
Pour any of the prepared solutions into a spray bottle. Remove the cabin filter and apply the solution to the evaporator. Turn on the air conditioning, turn on the maximum fan mode, disinfect for about 10 minutes. To prevent drops of the solution from flying into the cabin, you can cover the deflectors.
But many years of dirt deposits cannot be cleaned with such products. Therefore, you will need to remove the evaporator and clean or replace it.

Cabin filter before and after use
The best measure is timely replacement of the cabin filter. Especially when traveling on dirt roads and frequent trips into nature.
At least once a season it is worth checking the patency of the drainage tube. It can become clogged with poplar fluff or dirt particles. Water accumulates under the evaporator and creates ideal conditions for the development of bacteria, but has a negative effect on the operation of the evaporator itself. You can check with a thin (1 mm) wire. The tube will also be cleaned if it is clogged.
You can turn off the air conditioning a couple of minutes before the end of the trip without turning off the fan. The evaporator will dry out a little as it heats up. The car owner will not be overtired and will not have time to overheat, and his Priora will be a little lighter.

Replacing the cooling radiator Priora with air conditioning
After a certain period of time after the release of the Lada Priora, the manufacturer began to equip them with climate control units (air conditioners) Panasonic and HALLA. The new heater has become structurally different from the old one, and getting to it has become much easier. To replace the radiator, you no longer need to remove the frill (windshield trim), VUK, wiper holders or heater.

You need to: remove the sound insulation of the engine, disconnect the engine air filter pipe and the radiator pipe seal on the stove. We drain the antifreeze and take out the radiator.
A car enthusiast who has even a little experience in owning a Priora can relatively easily change some parts of his car. These spare parts include the interior heating radiator of the Lada Priora. The main thing is not to rush and follow all the recommendations described above, and “tighten up” yourself a little in theory, this applies to both selection and repairs.
Step-by-step instructions for replacing the engine radiator on a VAZ 2170 Priora:
— First of all, drain the antifreeze/antifreeze from the system. To do this, open the expansion tank, then unscrew the drain plug, after placing a container under it.
— Remove and carefully pull out the fan casing, to do this you need to disconnect the wires and unscrew the fasteners.
— We remove the signal
— Next, loosen the clamps and disconnect the compression and outlet pipes.
— Unscrew the radiator mounts to the body...
...then disconnect the fastening element of the expansion tank hose to the front panel.
— Loosen the hose clamp and disconnect it.
— After this, you can pull out the radiator and remove the 2 lower cushions and mounting bushings.
Note: to repair the radiator yourself, rinse it thoroughly and inspect it for cracks in the plastic elements. If they are discovered, it will not be possible to repair it. If not, then plug the pipes and lower them into water. Apply air to detect leaks.
— replacing the radiator on a VAZ 2170 occurs in the reverse order (do not forget to first install the lower mounting pads and the upper mounting bushings).
