Disk parameters 2114
Bolt pattern (also known as disk drilling, also known as pitch circle diameter) is a value that shows the number of mounting holes in the disk, as well as the linear distance between them. It is indicated, respectively, by two numbers. The standard wheel bolt pattern for the VAZ 2114 is 4*98. This means that the disk has 4 mounting holes for bolts, and the distance between the centers of these holes is 98 mm.
It is worth noting that such drilling is standard not only for the 14th model, but also for all other cars produced by AvtoVAZ, with the exception of the Oka and Niva.
In addition to the bolt pattern, there are a number of other important parameters of the disk that can be useful when choosing non-original spare parts. These include: the width, which is designated as 5.0J, the offset of the disc, marked as ET45, and the diameter of the hub centering hole, equal to 58.5 mm. The mounting bolts have an M12 thread with a pitch of 1.25 mm.
Selection and replacement of wheel rims
Many car enthusiasts, especially those keen on tuning their cars, install wheels from various foreign cars instead of original wheels. This is due to the fact that the bolt pattern of the VAZ 2114, as already mentioned, is 4*98, and the wheel bolt pattern of the vast majority of serial foreign cars is 4*100.
This seemingly insignificant difference in the distances between the mounting holes is in fact extremely significant, because the tolerance in the manufacture of disks does not exceed 0.7 mm. As a result of this, a disk with center-to-center distances of 100 mm, even if desired, will not fit tightly on a hub with a distance between bolts of 98 mm.
Such a loose fit can lead to such unpleasant consequences as:
- disc beating while driving;
- spontaneous unwinding of fasteners;
- rapid wear of the wheel bearing.
But it is still possible to solve this problem, and there are three options. The first is to use bolts with offset heads, the second is to replace the bolts with studs, the third is to install a metal spacer between the disc and the hub. The first two options, although less expensive, are quite unreliable, since they do not provide the necessary fixation, and the studs, in addition, are not resistant to large torsional loads. That is why it is best to give preference to the last option.
However, in this case, several important points should be taken into account:
- The thickness of the spacers used (which can be purchased at car dealerships) must be at least 20 mm.
- It is advisable to replace all the disks at once so that there are no differences in their removal.
- If only one disk is being replaced, then it should be selected with the minimum possible offset in order to compensate for the thickness of the spacer and reduce the load on the hub.
When deciding to install spacers, you should remember that a large difference in the offset of the discs on different wheels can lead to a significant deterioration in the car's handling, especially at high speeds.
Other settings
In addition to the basic characteristics of the tire and wheel, there are other important indicators that must be taken into account. One of them is wheel offset, which is the distance from the wheel hub to the middle of the rim.
You can also increase the car's ground clearance using spacers for shock absorbers. You can install them yourself. Then the offset can be made smaller, but its deviation from the recommended one leads to a change in the load on the hub bearing. This will result in a reduction in its service life and affect the controllability of the car.
The offset can be made less than recommended for wide rims. If the discs are narrow, then you can take more. To make the right choice, it is advisable to seek help from a specialist, from whom you will receive precise instructions on what parameters are needed. When purchasing disks, it is extremely important to accurately select the mounting dimensions for the mounting bolts and nuts (PCD). If the choice is made even with a slight error, a disc with a slight PCD deviation that is not visually noticeable can be installed on the hub. Then some bolts will fit exactly, while others will fit misaligned. Such a wheel will begin to “figure eight”, and the nuts will spontaneously unscrew.
Types of rims
Having figured out what the bolt pattern of VAZ 2114 discs is and how to compensate for it when using discs with a different type of drilling, let’s now talk about the discs themselves.
Currently, you can find 3 main varieties of them on sale, namely:
- steel wheels;
- alloy wheels;
- forged wheels.
Steel wheels come as a standard factory option on all VAZ cars. They are characterized by low cost and, at the same time, good reliability and durability. In addition, in the event of an accident they are deformed without destruction, which in most cases allows them to be straightened and used again.
Cast wheels are made from aluminum alloys and due to this, as well as the overall complexity of their production, cost significantly more. At the same time, they are distinguished by a variety of shapes and options, due to which they are in high demand among those who like to tune their car (another important advantage is their low weight compared to stamped steel wheels).
True, they also have their disadvantages, the main one of which is their non-repairability. Due to its great hardness, in the event of an accident the cast disk does not collapse, but simply bursts, sometimes splitting into several parts. This is not only economically unprofitable, but also dangerous (for example, if a disc spontaneously breaks when driving on an uneven road).
How to choose stamped products
VAZ 2109 with stamped rims
Stamped wheels are the most common for the VAZ 2109. Cars are equipped with these from the factory very often. This is due to the low cost of manufacturing such products.
They are not attractive in terms of design and have poor performance, but often car enthusiasts are attracted by their price. It is necessary to install stamped products on VAZs in compliance with the same requirements as for cast ones. Their parameters and sizes are fully consistent.
The dimensions and parameters common for the entire line of VAZ car models allow you to choose a set of wheels without any problems.
VAZ 2109 is a 5-door front-wheel drive hatchback produced at the Volzhsky Automobile Plant. In comparison with the “related” VAZ-2108, the model was positioned as more “solid” and intended for a family man, since it was endowed with a less expressive appearance and 5 doors. Due to the characteristic contours of the body, the car was often called a “chisel”.
“Nine” represents class B. The main competitors of the model include Skoda Felicia and Renault 19. The Russian car was inferior to its “classmates” in reliability, but was much more affordable.
The peak of popularity of the VAZ 2109 occurred in the 90s. Then production of the model opened in Belgium and Finland. However, the production of the “nine” soon ceased in these countries. In 2004, the model was discontinued at the Volzhsky Automobile Plant. Until 2011, the VAZ 2109 was produced in Ukraine.
Sales of the “nine” started in 1987. Externally, the model was almost completely identical to the VAZ-2108, differing from it only in the number of doors. The car retains the same styling: angular body features, a relatively slight slope of the windshield, a large protruding bumper and noticeable rectangular headlights. Despite the similar design and dimensions, the “nine” and “eight” were fundamentally different cars. The width of the front doors in the VAZ-2109 was reduced by almost 250 mm. In the appearance of the model one could guess the swiftness of the lines, but the sportiness became much less.
The interior of the “nine” turned out to be extremely practical. At the same time, the developers managed to increase comfort indicators. The car now has a “low” instrument panel, which has become more convenient. The front seats received headrests, and the upper belt attachment points were height-adjustable. Upholstery with inserts and optional fabric seats added to the model's prestige. The folded rear seats made the VAZ-2109 look like a station wagon. The cabin had ventilation and heating systems.
The first modernization of the car took place in 1989. The front part of the body has been slightly refined. The entire restyling consisted of a transition to “long” front wings, replacing the “short” version. In 1990, the model received a new 1.5-liter engine (72 hp). The modernized version was called VAZ-21093. It was this modification that became the most popular. By the mid-1990s, 1.1- and 1.3-liter engines were excluded from the line of power units. The engines were combined with 5-speed gearboxes.
The next restyling of the model took place in 1995. They stopped melting the radiator grille. The last cosmetic improvement of the VAZ-2109 happened in 1997. The car has not changed again.
Wheel and tire sizes
Regardless of the modification, the “nine” could be equipped with the following types of tires and wheels:
- wheels 5J on 13 ET40 (5 – width in inches, 13 – diameter in inches, 40 – positive offset in mm), tires – 165/70R13 (165 – tire width in mm, 70 – profile height in%, 13 – rim diameter in inches);
- 4.5J wheels on 13 ET40, tires – 155/80R13;
- 5.5J wheels on 13 ET40, tires – 175/70R13;
- 5J wheels on 14 ET40, tires – 175/65R14;
- 5.5J wheels on 14 ET37, tires – 185/60R14;
- 6J wheels on 14 ET35, tires – 185/60R14.
Tips for choosing wheels for a VAZ 2109
Sooner or later, every car owner is faced with the need to change discs. This detail not only ensures reliable movement, but is also part of the owner’s image. Therefore, VAZ 2109 rims should be selected correctly, following the manufacturer’s instructions, and taking into account your preferences.
Today's market provides the car owner with a wide selection of disc products. But how to choose the option that suits your car? What should you pay attention to first? Is it possible to have perfect value for money? Let's try to understand these automotive intricacies.
Disk types
There are several types of disks.
- Stamped from steel.
- Cast from light alloy materials.
- Forged light alloy.
They have a number of differences in quality and price.
Stamped steel on the VAZ 2109 are installed by the manufacturer at the factory immediately on the conveyor.
They are inconspicuous and quickly lose their attractive appearance, which is why the common opinion among car enthusiasts is that stamped steel wheels have already outlived their usefulness. They are being replaced by discs made of light alloys.
Many will disagree, and rightly so, because steel wheels for the VAZ 2109 have a number of advantages.
Advantages of steel wheels
- cheap;
- lasting;
- reliable;
- can be restored, because with a strong impact it will not break or crack, but will only be dented and there is a possibility of its restoration;
- You can change them easily and without additional tools with your own hands; you don’t even need instructions with photos and videos.
Of course, if image is a priority for you, and you have extra money in your wallet, the price of this option is quite high, then in this case this product will suit you.
For the VAZ 2109, light alloy wheel rims are made by manufacturers from titanium, aluminum or magnesium. Titanium is a good choice, but expensive. The aluminum option is considered one of the best. Among other things, it does not corrode. Magnesium ranks third in the ranking.
Pros of alloy wheels
The VAZ 2109 alloy wheel has many advantages in its arsenal compared to its steel counterparts:
- modern look;
- weight reduction of non-sprung parts;
- the ability to realize any design fantasy;
- improved cooling of the brake unit;
- precision manufacturing;
- special anti-corrosion treatment, which is important for winter driving enthusiasts when salt is used on the roads;
- standing out from the monotony.
Disadvantages of alloy wheels
With all the advantages of such disks, they have several disadvantages:
- fragile material, upon impact they crack and break;
- cannot be repaired;
- you can easily damage them, for example, when parking;
- often they have manufacturing defects - cracks;
- do not absorb the impact, thereby creating additional load on the suspension parts.
Tips for driving on alloy wheels
- Avoid impacts.
- Park with care and attention.
- Try to avoid falling into holes and potholes at speed.
- Slowly cross the tracks.
Wheel sizes
Some of the most popular sizes for domestic cars are R14 and R15. Installation of such products is possible without any problems, provided that the overhang, width and drilling dimensions are observed. If a decision is made to install products that differ in size, then it is necessary to alter some components or purchase a set of spacers.
Note!
The problem with installing large wheels is the small wheel arches.
If you exceed the parameters without modifying the arches, then the tires in turns will touch the slats and arches, which will lead to high wear of all components and parts of the chassis.
To avoid such problems, you should purchase rims whose sizes are guaranteed to fit all parameters. The optimal sizes of 14 and 15 inches correspond to the factory settings for handling, dynamics and smoothness.
Wheels with a radius of R13 and R14 will give the maximum level of riding comfort.
As for large sizes, the decision to install them has its positive and negative sides, which are important to know. And the decision to purchase and replace wheels must be made by the car owner.
- Improved car behavior on the road;
- Improving the appearance of the car;
- Maximum road performance, such as dynamics, handling;
- Better absorption of road surface defects;
- With high-profile tires installed, the wear resistance of the suspension increases;
- Reducing the braking distance.
- Reduced driving comfort, which is associated with the high sensitivity of the suspension to all road defects;
- Difficulty parking and driving on roads with problematic surfaces;
- Increased requirements for pressure control in low-profile tires;
- Increased fuel consumption, which is associated with the increased complexity of driving the wheels;
- High price of the kit.
Wheel sizes and their compliance for VAZ 2109
If you have already decided what material the discs should be made from, it’s time to go buy them. It is important to take into account some nuances so as not to get into trouble and not throw money away.
- Make sure that the disks are factory-made and not home-made. Although they are cheaper, after a few thousand kilometers the joy of a cheap purchase will come back to you with the proverb: “The miser pays twice.”
- It is important that the discs not only match your design taste, but also fit exactly in size, as required by the manufacturers. To do this, you need to know their exact dimensions that fit your car. This information can be found in the instruction manual or on the manufacturer's website.
- Understand the disc labeling. It must be stamped in a visible place on each disc. It is very important to understand the labeling. Having done this once, you will never fall for the bait of charlatans.
Choosing wheels for a VAZ 2109
Replacing discs is a natural step for owners of any car. Even those who prefer to ride on factory wheels won't be able to use them forever. And when the old ones become unusable, the question arises - what to buy to replace them.
Beautiful, stylish
Analyzing the wheel rim market, the entire range can be divided into three types:
- Stamped steel;
- Light alloy cast;
- Light alloy forged.
Steel
Cast
But at the same time, steel stampings have their advantages, due to which this type of disc is still produced and is in impressive demand among consumers:
- Affordable price. These are the cheapest options available today;
- High strength indicators. Considering the quality of our roads, many people think primarily about quality, safety, and not external data;
- Reliability. They do not have to be changed almost every season, which results in impressive savings;
- With strong impacts, the stampings do not break or crack. They crumple as much as possible, which opens up opportunities for recovery and restoration;
- Easy to remove and change without outside help.
But let's be completely honest. With all their positive qualities, the disgusting appearance forces car owners to abandon reliability and durability in favor of image and external attractiveness. Moreover, you should not think that light-alloy options are absolutely fragile and break only from one type of damage.
Forged
Light alloy
If we talk about alloy wheels, they are made, as you may have guessed, from special light alloys.
A total of three types of alloys are used.
Alloy type
Peculiarities
An excellent choice in all respects except cost. These are the most expensive alloy wheels, which, nevertheless, last a long time, are reliable, and look simply excellent.
Many people put aluminum alloy first, taking into account external characteristics, strength indicators and availability. An important advantage of aluminum is that it is not susceptible to corrosion. With proper use, aluminum alloy lasts a long time and maintains the excellent appearance of the car.
In the ranking among three light alloys it occupies the third place of honor. If you have the choice of titanium or aluminum, choose them. But this does not mean that magnesium alloys should be avoided.
When choosing alloy wheel sets, be sure to compare their strengths and weaknesses. Appearance is far from the only criterion that you need to pay attention to when purchasing.
Which wheels to choose?
Wheel rims perform the following important functions:
- torque transmission;
- sealing the tire along the inner perimeter of the contact;
- precise placement of the wheel relative to the suspension and body.
1.Deciphering the characteristics of rubber
First of all, you need to figure out how to decipher the characteristics of rubber, which are usually applied to the side surface of the tire. Typically the size is designated 175/70 R13. From this entry it follows that the tire width is 175 mm; 70 — tire profile height (% of width). In this example, the profile height is determined as follows: 175x0.7 = 122.5 mm.
Let's convert the diameter into a general dimension: d=13x25.4=330 mm. As a result, the outer diameter of the tire will be: D=330+122.5x2=575 mm.
For 14″ wheels, the main sizes can be as follows: 185/60 R14 and 175/65 R14.
2.Features of using wide and narrow wheels
Each size has its own advantages and disadvantages. A wider tire increases the grip on the road surface. As a result, braking improves and the car becomes more controllable. If you use an alloy wheel, the wheel becomes much lighter. The car is more stable on a straight line, but “dives” worse when turning. The wider the tire, the more likely it is to hydroplane on the highway.
With a low profile, the rubber is more resistant to deformation when cornering. But then the impacts from uneven roads become stronger. They are transmitted directly to the suspension and body. As a result, wear on the chassis increases and ride comfort deteriorates.
In winter, a wide tire is less able to push through a thin layer of snow or water, which reduces traction. A tall tire better smooths out impacts from road unevenness, but when turning sharply at high speed, it may “break.” It folds sideways or jumps off the disk. The disc may also touch the asphalt, creating a risk of tipping over.
The use of 15″ wheels is prohibited by the manufacturer and the vehicle may not pass technical inspection. If such wheels are used for the VAZ 2109, the recommended wheel sizes are 185 mm wide and 195 mm wide. In the latter case, the wide tire is already beginning to touch the arch. For a wide disk, it is necessary to increase its overhang, which leads to overload and rapid failure of the bearing.
Operating rules
Following these recommendations will significantly extend the life of your light alloy wheels.
- Try to avoid bumps, which requires more careful driving.
- Park carefully and pay close attention to where you park your car.
- Avoid hitting holes and potholes. This is dangerous for a car with any wheels, but if the stamping can still be restored later, the light alloy will have to be sent to a landfill.
- When moving on rails, do not gain high speed. Impacts on metal can cause not only deformation of the discs, but also damage to the suspension.
Markings and parameters
The markings indicated on the rims are of three types:
- European;
- Russian;
- American.
The difference between them is not significant, plus the information is always indicated the same, only sometimes with different ways of notation.
When choosing wheels for the VAZ 2109, you need to adhere to the choice of products with the following parameters.
Parameter
Features and Requirements
Here we are talking about rim width and diameter. For nines, it is important to use wheels where the diameter and width of the rim have the following parameters - 5.5 by 13.5, 5.5 by 14 or 6 by 14 inches. It is possible to install wheels with a large diameter, but this will affect the technical characteristics, control complexity, fuel consumption and other parameters
This is the number of holes intended for fixing the disk and the distance between them. For VAZ 2109 the required parameter is 98/4
This is the diameter of the central hole. For VAZ 2109 it is 58.1 millimeters
This is a departure. Requires +40. Choosing wheels with a lower offset will increase traction, which will lead to more difficult steering, faster wheel bearing wear and increased fuel consumption
size table
Focus on these key parameters when choosing a new kit. Plus, don’t forget about the role of the quality of the products themselves.
Parameters of standard tires VAZ 2107
Standard tires on the VAZ 2107 are marked 175/70R13 82T or 165/70R13 82T. These letters and numbers are deciphered as follows:
- “175” (“165”) – width of the tire profile in millimeters;
- “70” – ratio of profile height and tire width in percentage;
- “R” – designation of a radial tire;
- The number “13” means that the tire diameter is 13 inches;
- The index “82” indicates the tire’s load capacity, which is 470 kg;
- “T” is a marking indicating a maximum speed of 190 km/h.
Installing lower profile tires will increase the likelihood of wheel damage if you hit a pothole. Wheels with a higher profile may not fit in the wheel arch and may rub on bumps.
It is worth remembering that non-standard profile height changes the wheel circumference and affects the accuracy of the speedometer readings.
Recommendations when choosing
When choosing a set of new stampings or light alloys, be sure to pay attention to the following points.
- All alloy wheels must be certified and supplemented with a quality mark and X-ray inspection.
- All discs must have a mark from the regulatory authority and a document confirming that the discs have passed quality control and compliance with current standards.
- The product indicates the maximum permissible load that the disk can handle.
- The name and other information about the manufacturer is quite obvious information that you can and should read on the disk.
- Product heat number, production method, marking and date of manufacture. If not, look for a kit in another store. This is clearly a counterfeit or questionable shipment.
