We repair the oil pump VAZ 2106

Causes of oil pump failure

The first and most common cause of oil pump failure is a clogged oil receiver, as a result of a clogged crankcase. In case of malfunctions of this kind, it is recommended to drain the oil, dismantle the pan, and then wash it together with the oil receiver. Since the oil filter is located after the pump, unfiltered lubricant passes through the oil receiver and some other parts, which increases the likelihood of oil contamination and wear on parts.

Another common failure of the oil pump is damage or breakage of the unit body or its gears. The result of such damage is an increase in the gap between these parts. Theoretically, it is possible to replace the oil pump housing or make weld deposits with further adjustment, but this process is expensive and quite labor-intensive. Therefore, often at the first symptoms of an oil pump malfunction, worn parts are immediately replaced.

Causes of oil pump failure:

1. The oil level in the crankcase is constantly low. 2. Breakdown of devices that are responsible for controlling pressure. 3. Use of low-quality oil with inappropriate viscosity. 4. Oil and coolant are mixed. 5. Oil pump intake is dirty. 6. Contamination of oil filter components. 7. Failure of safety or lubrication valves.

Engine lubrication

To ensure the required oil pressure in the line and compensate for its consumption during engine wear, the oil pump has increased performance.

The gear driven oil pump is mounted inside the oil pan. The pump is attached to the cylinder block using two bolts of different lengths.

The drive gear of the product is fixedly fixed on the roller, on an axis fixedly installed in the pump body, the gear wheel rotates freely.

When using a car, parts of any device gradually wear out. If it is noticed that the pump has begun to perform its functions incorrectly, the pressure differs from the nominal one: either increased or decreased at idle speed, it is necessary to replace the oil pump on the VAZ 2107.

Removing the oil pump

To work you will need:

  • Socket wrenches for “13” and “10”.
  • Extension.
  • Cardan joints.

Advice: It is better when replacing the oil pump on a VAZ 2107 is done on an inspection pit or a lift.

Dismantling procedure:

  • Replacing the oil pump on a VAZ 2107 begins with disconnecting the wire from the battery.
  • Oil is drained from the engine crankcase.

Tip: To improve oil drainage, the engine must be warmed up well to operating temperature.

  • The engine splash guard is removed.
  • The nuts securing the engine front suspension cushions to the cross member are unscrewed. In order for the pillow pins to easily come out of the holes, the engine must be slightly raised using a jack or hoist.
  • The engine crankcase of a VAZ 2107 is removed.
  • The oil pump is removed.

Replacing the VAZ 2107 oil pump is carried out in the reverse order of its removal.

Tip: you need to pay attention that the bolts for fixing the VAZ 2107 oil pump are of different lengths. When installing them, you need to make sure that they fall into place. Oil pump fixing bolts

The cost of repairs can be reduced if you do not completely change the oil pump, but replace or repair only worn parts, and then assemble the device yourself.

How to properly disassemble the VAZ 2107 oil pump

It is better to disassemble the product by first placing it in a vice:

  • By unscrewing the bolts, the inlet pipe with the pressure reducing valve is disconnected.
  • The cover on the oil pump housing is removed.
  • The axle with the drive gear and the driven gear are removed from the device body.

Checking the oil pump

Oil pump VAZ 2107
As you know, there is a sensor on the dashboard of a car that shows the level of oil pressure. If this warning light comes on when the engine is running, it means that you urgently need to stop operating the power unit and perform diagnostics, since there is a risk of rapid wear of the system and subsequent engine breakdown.

To check the oil pump yourself, open the hood and look for fresh oil leaks on the engine; if there is no “crankcase protection”, look if there is any damage on it. If there is still a leak in the crankcase, it is necessary to temporarily seal it using a piece of rubber, a rag or tape to the nearest service station.

Next, check the engine oil level and add if necessary. If the lamp does not light, the crankcase must be replaced. If it continues to blink, go to the nearest service station to find out the reason. In addition, if during inspection you hear the sound of gears, this also indicates wear on the oil pump and the need for repair.

The operating principle of modern VAZ rotary pumps

After starting the engine, the car begins to move and gradually accelerates. The crankshaft rotates faster and faster. As the shaft rotation speed increases, the pressure in the engine's lubrication system gradually drops, and the need for new oil increases.

As the oil pressure decreases, the spring on the movable pump stator expands, the stator attached to it begins to rotate, then moves and engages with the driven rotor. This begins the suction of oil into the pump cavity. The oil is then forced into the engine by the rotor blades and the suction cycle is repeated.

Oil Pump Repair Tools

To repair the oil pump, use a set of wrenches, a soldering iron, pliers and an impact screwdriver. It is also recommended to use special technical products containing oil and surfactants when cleaning oil pump elements. These products do not pollute the surface and are not aggressive.

After using these products, there is no need to wash the part, since they have properties that create protection on the surface of the part from the influence of air on the metal. Note that repairing an oil pump is a delicate matter that requires concentration, so for correct diagnosis you will also need good lighting.

Disassembly, visual diagnostics of parts and repair of the oil pump

The oil pump is installed near the engine because it is an element of it. First, remove it from the engine, for which you need to drain the oil, unscrew the engine oil sump and remove the oil pump with the oil receiver.

Work order:

  1. Using an impact driver, remove the oil pump cover screws.
  2. Remove the oil pump cover and carefully clean the parts from oil deposits and dirt with a napkin.

  3. Take a caliper or a special ruler and measure the distance between the pump body and the output rotor. The optimal distance should be no more than 0.400-0.483 millimeters; otherwise, the oil pump will not deliver the required pressure and will need to be replaced.
  4. Also measure the side clearance of the inner rotor. The oil pump needs to be replaced if the side clearance is more than 0.03-0.085 millimeters.

    Reducing valve plug

  5. Use a wrench to unscrew the pressure reducing valve plug. Under it there is a spring and an elastic band. The rubber band needs to be replaced. The spring should be measured in a calm state, its length should be 81 millimeters. If there are deviations, the spring is also replaced with a new one.

  6. We also remove the pressure reducing valve. Lightly tap the housing on a clean rubber or wooden surface. If the valve does not want to come out, you should carefully pry it off with pliers or a toothpick.

  7. Inspect all removable parts and housing parts for signs of wear.

  8. Measure the thickness of the driven and drive gears. The thickness of the driven one must be at least 7.35 millimeters, and the driving one - 7.42 millimeters. If the thickness is less, change the part.

  9. Also check the axial clearances of the gears. We install the driven gear into the housing, after which we use a metal ruler to measure the gap between the gear and the ruler. We check the drive gear in the same way. The axial clearance for the driven gear should be 0.15 millimeters, for the drive gear - 0.12 millimeters.

  10. Inspect the pressure relief valve for damage, plugs, and oil contamination. If they are missing, clean all holes and reassemble the oil pump in reverse order using sealant.

Replacing the oil pump, step-by-step instructions

Work order:

  1. Drain the engine oil.
  2. Remove the crankshaft toothed pulley, for which you need to remove the generator and timing pulleys, aligning them according to the marks. Please note that the tagging process differs for different car models, so you should read the manual for your car.

  3. Next, remove the oil pan.

  4. Unscrew the oil receiver fasteners and remove the oil receiver.

  5. Unscrew the six oil pump mounting bolts using a socket and extension.

  6. We insert a screwdriver between the pump and the main bearing, move it slightly, and then remove it.

  7. We are replacing the oil pump.
  8. Align the drive gear with the flats on the crankshaft.

  9. Lubricate the crankshaft oil seal lip with engine oil.
  10. Install a new oil pump onto the crankshaft. Install the six mounting bolts to secure the oil pump to the cylinder block.

How to Change the Oil Pump on a VAZ 2106

Replacing the oil pump on a VAZ 2101-VAZ 2107

Welcome! Oil pump. Usually called the "oil pump", it performs a very important function when the engine is running, namely, it supplies oil located in the oil pan, the crankshaft bearings and then through the air duct, distribution oil and the camshaft bearings, in most cases lubricating them.

Therefore, the oil pump plays a very large and important role in a car engine, and if it is damaged, then the lubrication system should not have the pressure it should have. (For more information about what will happen if the pressure in the lubrication system disappears, see the article “Useful information about oil pressure on a VAZ”).

The note! To replace the oil pump with a new one, you will need to stock up on: a basic set of wrenches, which will include a "10" and "13" wrench, and you will need to take the end sockets and extension cord to match the same heads, if possible, and pack your pockets with you!

Where is the oil pump located? It is located inside the engine so just by looking at the engine you won't see it, but to look at it you will first need to remove the crankcase, then you will need to remove the pan and only then will you see the oil pump with your own eyes.

How to Change the Oil Pump on a VAZ 2106

When should I replace my oil pump? It can be replaced with:

1. Pressure drop in the vehicle's lubrication system at engine idle temperature, as shown by the oil pressure indicator.

2. As well as failure of the pump itself or its transmission, which, by the way, can be replaced individually without completely replacing the oil pump, see Article: “Oil pump repair.”

The note!

It is easy to replace the classic VAZ oil pump without removing the engine.

Sorry for the quality of lighting, this video shows the method of replacing the oil pump of you 2106

No.

Diagnostics and replacement of VAZ classic oil pump (LADA 2101-07)

Oil pump

the main part of any engine.
And how much the engine depends on its condition. If you notice a drop in oil pressure after a hard blow to a bump that causes the crankcase to deform, it is likely that the oil pump, namely its intake pipe, is to blame for the drop in oil pressure!
3. And if your car's oil pressure is too high and outside the normal range, then most likely the culprit is a clogged relief valve, which can also be removed and replaced with a new one. (See How to remove this in the same pump repair article)

The note! What pressure in the lubrication system can you determine using a special indicator that shows the oil pressure in the system!

How to replace the oil pump with the same oil pump on a VAZ 2101-VAZ 2107?

The note! This job is time consuming, but it is still possible if you have the special tools, and this work should be done in a ditch or on elevators, otherwise the oil pump will need to be replaced!

Conclusion: 1) First remove any parts that prevent access to the pump, so first remove the crankcase from the car and then slide it to remove the pan. (For information on how to remove the deflector and oil pan, see the article “Replacing the oil tank on a VAZ”)

2) Next, remove the two screws that secure the oil pump to the car engine.

The note! Be sure to check which bolt you are going to remove as the two bolts are different lengths (one is shorter and the other is longer) so follow and then after installing the new pump, turn the same bolts in the correct places they were previously installed!

3) Once the bolts are turned upside down, remove the pump and pay attention to it, as there should be a gasket on it, which also needs to be removed, and if it becomes deformed, replace it with a new one.

The note! If you are going to install a new pump on a car, this gasket is replaced with a new one, because over time the old gasket shrinks and takes shape, and when you buy a new pump, it usually has a slightly different shape and can therefore oil leak through this place, the gasket does not fits its shape!

Assembly: The new oil pump is installed on the vehicle in the reverse order before removal.
