Many owners of Lada Kalina cars are faced with the problem of opening the rear doors. This occurs on both old and brand new cars, and this defect can be attributed to a manufacturing defect. But, apparently, no one at the factory thought of modifying the handle mechanism. Moreover, there is no such problem with the front handles, it only exists with the rear ones.
Recently, on my Kalina, due to constant excessive force when opening, the rear door handle broke off. Since repair kits for this part could not be found, I had to buy a new one assembled. Its price is 330 rubles. To replace you will need the following tool:
- 8 mm head
- Extension
- Ratchet or crank
Removing and installing the outer rear door handle on Kalina
So, before starting this repair, you will need to perform a procedure such as removing the door trim. After this you need to do the following:
- Unscrew the fastening nut from the inside of the door
- Unscrew the bolt from the end of the door
- Remove the handle assembly from the outside
- Install the new part in reverse order
- Secure the bolt and nut into place
What exactly breaks down in the mechanism?
In this case, the metal tongue that moves the lock rod was broken off, thereby opening it. This breakdown looks like this:
If you had repair kits, you could easily replace the broken part and that’s it, but I personally couldn’t find one.
Removal and installation of the outer handle on Kalina
Regardless of the body configuration or year of manufacture, reinstallation and repair of locks and handles remains the same for hatchbacks and station wagons. The order of work differs when repairing the front and rear elements. The arrangement of the parts is considered simple, so it takes about 30 minutes to reinstall one element. For independent work you will need the following tool:
- crosshead screwdriver;
- flat screwdriver;
- knob;
- head at 8;
- extension;
- sharp knife or awl.
Front door
The procedure for performing the work necessary to remove and install the outer front door lever on the Lada Kalina:
- Disconnect the negative terminal from the battery.
- Remove the inner trim of the outside rear view mirror by first prying it off with a screwdriver.
- Unscrew the locking lock.
- Using an awl or sharp knife, remove the plug.
- Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the armrest mounting screw.
- Pull the inner handle of the lock and unscrew the screw using a Phillips screwdriver.
- Remove the inner lever.
- Unscrew the armrest mounting bolt located in the niche.
- Unscrew the two pocket screws.
- Wrap a flat-head screwdriver in a rag and insert it between the trim and the door frame. Carefully pulling the screwdriver towards you, unclip the first clip that holds the trim. Also unclip all the other clips, there are 8 of them in total.
- Carefully remove the trim from the iron door frame.
- Disconnect the two wire connectors from the power window assembly.
- Move the trim to the side.
- Disassemble the lower link of the outer door handle drive.
- Unscrew the handle fastening bolt located at the end; for this, use a 8-mm socket and a knob.
- Disconnect the outer arm drive upper link.
- Remove the faulty part and replace it with a new one.
Lubricate all moving parts of the lock drive and assemble everything in reverse order. Most often the tongue or pawl breaks. Experts do not recommend replacing the element separately; it is better to reinstall the entire assembly, since the lock rod loses its performance characteristics over time.
Video on replacing the outer door handle on Kalina
So, the video is embedded from my YouTube channel for greater clarity and a clear demonstration of the repair process:
If you have any questions while reading the material, write in the comments here or on the channel under the video. I hope that the information was useful for Kalina owners.
Some owners of practical LADA Kalina have a problem caused by poor unlocking of the rear doors. This malfunction can occur not only in older LADA Kalinas, but also in completely new ones. This defect can rightly be characterized as a manufacturing defect. The manufacturer, it seems, has not yet taken measures to eliminate this defect in the handle mechanism, so the problem is still very relevant today.
Note that the front door handles do not suffer from such problems, but the rear mechanisms are much less fortunate.
So on this particular Lada Kalina, after several attempts to open the rear door, applying increased force to the handle, it broke. It is unlikely that a repair kit for this mechanism can be quickly found, so the only rational measure would be to purchase and install a new handle. The price is not high - about 350 rubles. In this article we will tell you how to remove and replace a broken door handle.
Removing the rear door lock and outside handle
The outside handle of the rear door can be replaced without removing the lock. Remove the rear door trim (see “Removing the rear door trim”).
Using a 8" socket with an extension, unscrew the nut and bolt securing the handle.
. and, moving the handle forward, remove it. Install the rear door outside handle in the reverse order. To remove the door lock, disconnect the wire terminal from the negative terminal of the battery.
Using a Phillips screwdriver, unscrew the screw securing the intermediate lever of the lock lock rod. . and remove the lever together with the rods from the rectangular protrusion, removing the locking rod from the plastic holder (shown by the arrow).
Using a Phillips screwdriver, unscrew the screw securing the base of the inner door handle. . and remove it together with the rod from the hollow pin. Remove the decorative glass trim and take out the glass guide (see “Removing rear door glass”)

Replacing the outer handle on the rear door of a Lada
To carry out repairs, we stock up on the following tools:
- An “8” size head paired with a ratchet or wrench.
- Extension cord.
Let's start removing.
- First, we dismantle the inner trim of the door card.
- Unscrew the nut located on the inside of the door.
- Unscrew the bolt at the end of the door.
- The handle is removed from the outside of the door panel. We remove the assembled mechanism!
- We install the new product in strictly reverse order.
- We return the previously unscrewed fasteners (nut and bolt) to their original places. We tighten, observing the required torque. Let's not overdo it.
Replacing rear door glass
Remove the rear door trim.
We lower the glass so that we can unscrew the screw securing the decorative glass trim.
Use a flat-head screwdriver to pry up the edge of the inner glass seal.
We lift the seal up, applying the necessary force, and remove the inner glass seal from the inner door panel.
Having bent the edge of the seal, use a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the self-tapping screw securing the decorative glass trim.
Using a slotted screwdriver, press out the upper corner of the decorative trim and remove it.
Remove the lower part of the seal from the door.
Using a 8mm socket, unscrew the bolt securing the glass guide at the end of the door.
We take out the guide. Roll down the window
From the outside of the door, use a slotted screwdriver to pry up the decorative retainer of the glass seal.
To avoid damaging the paint, place a soft material under the screwdriver, for example, a piece of fabric folded several times.
Removing the rear door trim on Kalina is quite simple. To do this you will need: a flat screwdriver, a small piece of rag, a knife or a super thin screwdriver. This work is not very difficult, you can easily do it without outside help, even if you have no experience in car repair.
Let's sum it up
Since the problem is quite common, we hope that the material will be more useful for Lada Kalina owners. Now we realized that the rear door handles of the car we reviewed should be handled especially carefully so that the rear door handle does not need to be replaced.
We will show you how to replace the outside door handle on Lada Kalina and Lada Granta cars. I think many owners have encountered this problem: the front doors open from the outside without any problems, but to open the rear doors, you have to put in at least twice as much effort to get the lock to work. You have to pull the handle very hard, as a result the mechanism does not hold up and the metal tongue breaks off on the inside. In such cases, the entire handle assembly is usually replaced.
In our case, after removing the door card, the following detail was found:
This is the same metal “tongue” that sets the door lock rod in motion. From the inside, unscrew one nut 8:
Now the handle can be removed from the outside, one part of it can be removed without problems, but the second part will require a little fiddling. A new pen costs around 300 rubles, which is not so expensive that you have to bother with repairing the old one.
When the new handle sits in place, but is not secured. it is necessary to move it as far as possible towards the rear of the car, i.e. back so that the tongue, which was broken off, would engage with the door lock mechanism. In this position, you need to check how the door opens; if everything is fine, screw the handle.
